02| AMAZO

Gemma could count her on one hand the amount of times she had visited her father's mansion in Metropolis. Even when she had moved back to Metropolis for college she never felt the desire to. And she chose for her father to pay for her own apartment in the city.

Now that he was facing a lifetime in prison the mansion was hers, and yet as she walked inside it didn't feel that way.

The place felt cold and lonely, though she supposed that her father liked it that way. It explained why he had made sure to cut Gemma and her aunt almost completely from his life. At least he had the decency of sending the large check every week and paying for their own mansion in Palmera City.

Gemma had been foolish enough to believe that Anthony Ivo would finally step up as a father when her aunt first got sick. Looking back she shouldn't have been surprised by the disappointment. He had pretty much disappeared from her life when her mother had died at the age of thirteen.

She had her things sent over early in the day as she met with her lawyer, but it looked like she would have to do some major redecorating for the place to feel like home.

Thomas had been nice enough to arrange that everything that belonged to her father be removed from the master bedroom and test it felt like he was still in every corner of the room.

Taking a seat on the edge on the king sized bed Gemma turned on the T.V. She had gotten into the bad habit of obsessively watching the news and seeing what they had to say about her or her father.

Switching the channel to Metropolis 8 Gemma watched as they played clips of the press conference the Justice League did after they had defeated AMAZO. Superman and Wonder Woman were the ones mainly speaking about the victory but how nothing could replace the civilian lives that were lost.

Gemma let herself fall back on the bed, her life had never exactly felt normal but she had never expected this. She wasn't the one who created AMAZO but in a way it felt like she had. Maybe if she had paid more attention to her father she might have seen some signs that he was creating a dangerous weapon.

Of course she rational part of her knew that none of it was her fault and that there was nothing she could have done to prevent it. But she couldn't help the guilt that she felt.

Gemma had spent the last two hours going through all of her father's files and all the projects that he had been working on since he first founded Ivo Technologies. For the most part they were all pretty standards projects meant to further the medical field. He had become obsessed with medicine since her mother passed from cancer, that was why he started the company to find a cure for her mother.

It was 7am when the doors of research lab opened and Thomas stopped at the sight of Gemma at her desk. She looked up at him and offered him a small smile. "Good morning."

"What are you doing here so early?" Thomas questioned as he shrugged off his coat. He must have been used to being the first one into the lab, but if Gemma wanted any chance of proving herself she needed to show everyone that she was taking this seriously.

"I couldn't sleep." Gemma admitted as she returned her focus on the screen in front of her. She honestly thought that she would never be able to sleep again until she got it taken care of. If anything else happened that would be on her conscious. "Not when there's so many things that I need to take care of."

Pulling a chair next to her Thomas sat down, he seemed highly interested in what she was doing and although she considered him a friend Gemma wondered just how much she should let him in on. "You've been taking care of what exactly?"

Gemma hesitated for a moment, but decided that she needed someone to trust. She didn't have anybody and she couldn't do it alone. "I've gone through all of Anthony Ivo's files, and I managed to erase everything related to the AMAZO tech."

Thomas shifted uncomfortably in his chair and she could see that he didn't entirely agree with her decision. "Are you sure that was the best idea?"

She couldn't help but feel shocked that he was questioning her, he never had before. Others would probably also think that she was insane for erasing all traced of such innovative technology, but she knew that she had done the right thing. "That tech was dangerous and got a lot of people killed."

"Yes. But that tech could have been used for other things."

"I don't want that kind of power in the wrong hands because I was too ambitious not to prevent it from happening." Gemma argued feeling no sense of regret. She could create new and better tech that could actually help people not hurt them. That was why her father had started the company to help people, he somehow lost his way but she would make sure that she alway did the wrong thing. "Ivo Technologies doesn't manufacture weapons."

Thomas nodded as he looked away from her and she could see the shame on his face now. "You're right I'm sorry."

Deciding that it was best to move on from the subject all together, she decided to continue onto what she had started doing before Thomas arrived. After having gone through one of his emails Gemma realized that her father had exchanged multiple emails with Victoria Kord, who was currently the head of Kord Industries.

The emails were vague, and Gemma felt like she might be onto something. It was odd that he would have any business dealing with a competitor. She had found an encrypted file that she was in the middle of hacking and she knew that he had to be working on something big. "My father was in contact contact with Victoria Kord, it seems like they were working on something together. It's not in any of his general files so whatever they were working on together couldn't have been good."

Thomas didn't say anything but just watched as she finished getting access to the file. It was titled The OMAC project, and as she looked through all the plans and graphics in the file the project simply seemed like a less advanced version of the AMAZO tech.

"Why would he partner with Kord Industries? It's not like he needed funding or resources."

"Maybe he had something else to gain by partnering with the Kord?" Thomas suggested, but he didn't seem as shocked or concerned as she was. She knew that she wasn't overreacting. That the cyborgs weren't being built for good, they were being built with the purpose of being weapons.

"I need to talk to him." Gemma muttered mostly to herself as she realized that she would have to see her father. The man that she planned to never speak to again, and she wasn't even sure that he was in any condition to receive visitors.

But she had to do it. If he had been developing dangerous weapons outside of the company she had to stop it. She couldn't just sit by and wait for something to happen when she had the ability to stop it.

A/N: It's going to be a couple of chapters before we get to Jaime, but I do find it important to set up Gemma first before anything else.
