Two - An Irritating Circumstance
( "Born of Frustration" by James ) Incompasses Lonnie's frustration nicely, Enjoy ;)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Lonnie rubbed the fog off the mirror in the changeroom and inspected his 5 o'clock shadow. Determining in was more an 8:30 shading he rubbed shaving cream on his sharp jawline and contemplated the woman in the car once again as the razor glided over his skin. 'Francesca...pretty name...those eyes...' His mind began to wonder in her direction in spite of himself.
"Damnit!' He barked as the razor nicked his chin, roughly pulling a piece of paper towel off the roll and ripping a section to stick to the small bleeding cut. "Serves me right not paying attention" he said out loud to no one. Lonnie was still unable to put his finger on what was bothering him about that encounter, but his gut kept nagging him. 'She was lyin' - both were, that I'm sure of' His long, thick fingers ran across his face, assessing the closeness of the shave. 'Tomorrow.' He tried to quite his mind 'Let it be until tomorrow.' But his brain wouldn't let it be, or let her be. He was intrigued in spite of himself.
Lonnie couldn't remember the last time he allowed himself the luxury of thinking about a woman, 'Been a long time...' He was raw after all the drama with Lana, and when she left him for her low-life ex, after how much he adored her, he would not allow himself to feel anything for anyone. Seeing a beautiful girl passing by he would ball his fist and bite his lip until it almost bled to avoid thinking anything. He had always been very self-protective, but after Lana he closed off completely.
The fact that his mind wondered openly without hesitation even for a minute concerned him, but also relieved a silent burden burning inside all at the same time. His emotions were complicated and ran deeply. Everyone knew him as straight talking and to the point – cold. And that was just fine with him. Lonnie preferred that. It kept his well of intense feelings, longings and desires safely tucked away from prying eyes and loose tongues.
Pulling the black ribbed V neck sweater over his head he grabbed his gear to leave. 'Ole Miss had made it to the finals again; not only in football, but in track as well. He felt a certain pride as he coached more than one of the boys who helped Miss get there. Lonnie had been looking forward to some good grub and the game all week. All the boys were meeting at Bubba's house after shift, and the food was definitely already there. He was pretty hungry, and couldn't wait to dig into whatever Tracy had made for the game.
"Lieutenant Jamison" Parkers voice rang over the P.A "Lonnie you still here? I got a possible Break and Enter at 2103 Floyd Street. Lonnie come back if your there..." The radio that hung on the wall vibrated with Parkers voice. It was like nails scraping down an old chalk board slowly.
Lonnie dropped his tote and grinded his teeth. He ran his hands roughly through his hair in frustration. He could feel his blood beginning to boil. He waited all week for this game, he's been looking forward to it. He needed to let loose – this is how he did it; game, food, and friends.
"Goddamit you got to be kidding me!" He was fuming mad at this disruption of his plans; it made him furious. But this was work, and his strong work ethic didn't allow him to do anything but his job. He grabbed the receiver and balled his other hand in to a fist, careful not to allow his feelings to spill out through his voice.
"Yes Parker I'm here. I'll head over."
"10-4 Lonnie. Sweet and Dee are about 5 minutes away."
"Tell them I'll be there in 10. Tell them to go silent. No sirens. No lights"
"Roger that, and Lonnie, I'm real sorry about having to call on you tonight. I know it's the game and all."
"Don't worry about it Parker just place some bets for me and save me some food, I'll be there as soon as I can."
"I will Lonnie. Out."
Lonnie jogged up the stairs and slammed open the door to the back parking lot where his corvette was. 'This better not take a long time' He thought angerly to himself. He could feel his stomach rumble and grabbed the package off the passenger side seat with the half-eaten pastry inside. "Great dinner" Lonnie shook his head and shoved the pastry in his mouth before ripping out of the parking lot. The tires screeched down main street leaving rubber marks on the cold, wet ash fault.
