Three - Close Call
( "If You Go Down I'm Going Down Too" by Kelsea Ballerni. Great humor in the song and vid :))
"Marty hand me that screwdriver there, the Phillips" Marty handed Frankie the screwdriver and she set the last connection in the panel for the wiring they needed for the equipment that was coming in. "I'm glad Tog remembered to drop all this shit off."
"I'm amazed he didn't forget, I'm actually impressed" Marty said sarcastically "I thought for sure we'd come into nothing." Tog was short for Toga; aka Geoff Wilson. His nickname came easy as he held a love for the Toga party, and had some crazy ones of his own back in the day. He was akin to John Belushi in Animal House, including his looks. Frankie and Tog had known each other for a long time. He was her "big brother from another mother" so to speak. The rest of the team; Six pack, Reba, Roach, Mac, Whinnie, Felicia, Foley, and Marie were back at the Heart of Sparta motel collecting the intel and monitoring Kaczynski's people.
"That says a lot coming from you" Frankie laughed in a whisper. Marty threw dirt at her from the basement floor. "This basement is pretty gnarly, when have you ever seen a dirt floor in a basement this century?" She stuck her finger in her mouth like she was going to throw up and Franki laughed, this time out loud, and both girls froze. Neither said a word, just listened. They heard nothing and both sighed heavily in relief.
"Let's wrap this up fast, I'm getting a feeling" Marty looked at Frankie seriously. She knew her friends gut feelings were always right, and she didn't want any bad vibes crawling on her in this creepy basement. Marty quickly ran wires that would be used to hook into hydro outdoors through an old, cracked window. The hydro lines were above ground which was a blessing, and they could access those tomorrow to put the extra circuits in if needed.
"Done?" Marty questioned.
"Done."
"Good let's get the hell outta here."
They immediately walked to the run-down stairs and moved upward as fast as they could safely go. Marty put her hand out for the knob and from under the door they saw streaks of light form the hallway above. She mouthed to Frankie to back up and the two crept down slowly, praying the stairs wouldn't give way under them. The doorknob began to turn frantically, someone was trying to push it open. 'The lock must be jammed' Frankie hoped it wouldn't give out yet. She motioned to the wall behind a dirty blanket for them to wait it out; they had no choice, they had to stay. The one window couldn't be opened, and whoever was upstairs would hear the rest of the glass break, giving them away.
'Our footprints' Frankie thought as she glanced down. Even in the dark she could see markings, but it was too late. She couldn't wipe them away the dust cloud would hang in the air like suet in a chimney. Marty began frantically waving her arms and pulled at Frankies sleeve to move. The door bust open with a hard bang and light from upstairs shown down the stairway. She could see dust already gathering in the light as they squeezed behind the blanket, covering their mouths gagging. It stunk like decaying flesh and Frankie had no clue how she was going to keep it together. It was repulsive.
The light bounced coming down the stairs and Sargent Wilson Sweet flung the flashlight back and forth across the basement. He waved for Sargent Dee Sheppard to proceed, she made her way onto the dirt floor and over to the back wall.
Sweet shone the light along the wall closest to the stairs and noticed the electrical box with new circuits and a ton of wires attached. He grabbed the wires on the floor and followed them to the window. Dee walked over to examine them. Her husband George was an electrician, and she would know what all the wires were for.
"These are brand new circuits and everything. See that-" Dee pointed to several old cut wires hanging loosely "That's old knob and tube wiring that's been replaced by this new stuff. But none of the new wiring hooks into the house, it all runs outside." She held the wires in her hand and looked at Sweet suspiciously. "Whoever did this doesn't seem to care that parts of the house now have no power, so it's unlikely this was to upgrade the electrical."
"Yeah I agree, there's footprints here as well" Sweet nodded "but who put the new wires in and why - why are the out the window?" Sweet looked up and saw a hydro pole close by "Maybe trying to hook into that" He pointed to it "But you'd need some serious equipment to pull that off."
"You would, not to mention skill, and it's illegal" Dee added looking at Sweet with her eye brows up saying, 'Perhaps this is more than your typical Break and Enter'. Sweet nodded and pulled his radio to his mouth.
"Lieutenant Jamison come in."
"Yeah Sweet go ahead?" Lonnie was walking around the perimeter of the house. There were some footprints going inside, but he couldn't find any leaving the house. The rain may have taken care of them, or whoever broke in was still in the house. He didn't think the latter was true; most likely some kids looking for a place to 'lay themselves down' as his Mama used to say. 'Well kids enjoy' he thought, a bit envious 'Wish I was going home to that.' Lonnie sighed and bent down at the broken window.
"Dee! Sweet!"
"Yes Lieutenant we're still here" Dee called out and walked back to the window. "Lonnie this just ain't right. Nothing seems to be missing, there is no sign of a B&E, whoever did this must have picked the lock 'cause there's no forced entry damage, and there's all this new wiring down here...it's bizarre."
"Dee, are there any kids around?"
"No Sir. Sweet and I checked the rest of the house before we came down here."
Lonnie stood up placing his hands on his hips. He just didn't get what was happening here. 'No body breaks into a house to rewire it and then steals nothing. This is the dumbest call I've ever been on' His blood began to simmer again as he thought of missing the game and 'Ole Miss kicking butt.
"What would you like us to do Lieutenant?" Sweet asked, already knowing the answer.
Lonnie bent down to look at Sweet through the window. "Nothin' to do. Head back to the Headquarters and write it up tomorrow. Go home"
Dee smiled "Don't have to tell me twice" They headed for the stairs and Lonnie headed to his corvette parked by the front door to call it in.
