|59| Who's To Blame

Nicole

I kept my hands up, gazing at all the officers who pointed their tasers and weapons at us. Sweat dripping down my forehead as I spared a look to Jaden whose eyes were wide in a mix of shock and fear.

"You two are under arrest."

I shook my head at them, "You have us mistaken! We're not the criminals here!"

He looked at me as if I was the dumb one here, "Oh yeah? What's on your hands?"

I grimaced then moved my hands down to wipe the blood off on my vest but the officer yelled, "Don't move!" making me put them back up.

Jaden slightly turned his head towards me, "I see them... Over there..." he whispered.

"See wha- HEY!" I spotted that woman dressed in black Jaden had told me about. She snuck out of a corner she had been hiding behind, Simon on her shoulders and, at the sound of my voice, she darted to her car, stuffing Simon inside and quickly getting into the front seat.

Not on my watch!

I grabbed Jaden and darted towards them.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!" The officer yelled as the rest of them tried to tase us but our bulletproof gear wouldn't allow them to.

As Jaden and I ran towards them, the woman started her car and sped off with Simon inside before I could get a grab at the door.

I won't let her take him away!

This time, officials started to shoot at us with bullets and we quickly ducked behind parked cars as we attempted to scramble away.

I rushed over to the nearest running vehicle and swung one of the police car doors open, quickly climbing in, "Jaden, get in!"

His eyes widened with anxiety building in them, "But-"

"Now!" I demanded.

He panicked for a second but hopped in anyway as I sped off before he could get a chance to close his door. "Nicole! This is a bad idea!"

"Shut up and just go along with it. We're already in a lot of trouble, there's no point in stopping now. Not when Simon is right at our fingertips..."

My only goal was to bring my father back home. It's all I want. It didn't matter what the cost was. He's too close for me to give up now.

The car's engines growled the harder I pressed on the gas, making me feel a wild rush of adrenaline pump through my veins. I chased after that mystery woman's car, catching up to her quickly. I never realized how much horsepower was in a cop car until now. We were right on her tail in a matter of minutes.

Someone came on in my earpiece, "Agent Greene! What the hell are you doing? Pull over!"

I shook my head silently, jaw tightly clenched as I tailgated the car. I knew what I was doing, I won't stop for anything now.

Another agent came on, "Greene! Stop the vehicle! Please!"

Almost there... We're almost there!

"Agent Greene, listen! You need to-"

I groaned and chucked my earpiece out of the window. Glaring at that woman's car. I have her right where I wanted, she was not going to slip away this time. We drove up onto a highway, swerving around other cars and trucks that traveled by. My eyes were only glued to the one car though. The one that my father, Simon, was in.

"Pull over!" a cop suddenly demanded from his mic.

Wait a second... That's no ordinary cop...

My palms started to sweat as a wild emotional rollercoaster of anger, fear, and now panic twisted and turned inside of me at the sight of those S.W.A.T trucks. I was beginning to get the sense that I was taking this too far.

But, what other choice do I have...? I can't just quit on Simon...

"Don't make us resort to using force! Pull over!" a large voice demanded.

Jaden looked scared for his life which made me regret making him do this. I regret making anyone do this... I'm putting way too many lives in danger!

Then a spark of realization struck me.

I've been the real problem all along... Not Fire Catcher.

If it wasn't for me, Simon's past with her wouldn't have come back up. If it wasn't for me, Fire Catcher wouldn't have been freed from prison till this day. If it wasn't for me, Jerry would still be alive and been able to come home to his children. If it wasn't for me, the whole team wouldn't be here, risking their lives because I ordered them to. I caused all of this!

"Nicki, look out!" Jaden yelled seconds before we felt the forceful impact from behind us.

A S.W.A.T truck had rammed into the back of my car causing us to screech into the next lane and almost crash into an innocent person's car but I quickly swerved around them and navigated our vehicle back to the correct lane. After getting positioned properly, I sped up and continued on my track after the target.

What? Where's Simon?

I couldn't see the car anymore! I lost them!

"NICKI, PULL OVER! They're gonna start shooting at us!" Jaden yelled.

I looked up at the helicopter hovering over us with the sound of its strong propellers surrounding us. The large letters on the side of its body indicated that it also belonged to the S.W.A.T team. It seemed like the whole world was against me now, like everything I've done was a complete mistake!

No, No! NO!

I wanted to scream and cry. I wanted to stop and just give up but I didn't want to be stopped by the police. I regret all of this!

I took a deep, uneasy breath and pulled my pistol out of my pocket, "Jaden... Take this." I handed him the gun.

His mouth gaped open then he glared at me, "I'm not shooting at the police Nicki, stop the car!"

A tear fell down my cheek and my grip tightened on the steering wheel as I told him, "No, Jaden... Shoot me!"

He froze for a moment. I couldn't tell what his expression was because my eyes were still glued to the road in hopes of seeing that car with Simon inside again. I didn't dare want to see his expression anyway.

"What...?" he asked quietly.

I shook my head painfully, swallowing down the lump in my throat, "I said, shoot me, Jaden! Shoot me! SHOOT ME IN THE HEAD!" I screamed impatiently.

I wanted to end the pain, the misery I've brought to myself and everyone else.

When I spared him a quick glance, I could see the pain and fear in his eyes and they made me want to break down and cry even more but I wasn't going to. There was no point anymore.

"No... No, Nicki never!"

My mind swirled and distorted itself as I began to surrender myself to insanity. "Jaden, if you don't do it, I'M GOING TO KILL US BOTH!"

BOOM!

Screeecchh!

One of the S.W.A.T trucks had rammed us off of the highway and violently sent us tumbling down a hill.

We rolled and rolled, glass shattering, metal bending and breaking, our bodies whipping left and right as the seatbelts tried to hold us to our seats until we finally hit the bottom surface with our car sitting right side up while black smoke lifted out of the hood. My heart pounded heavily in my chest and I could feel my sweat dampening the airbag pressed to my face. I couldn't feel a thing, not a muscle, not a limb. Nothing but heat...

Is it over?

I blinked my eyes open and saw that we were on a dirty, patchy, beach-like area.

Still alive...

I tried to shift my head a bit from the airbag and felt instant soreness in my neck that made me rest my head back on the bloodstained bag. Jaden groaned softly then looked over at me. He breathed heavily and sharply as he climbed out of the car and jogged limply over to my side. When he pulled me out, the cool air from outside hit me with a nice cool breeze as he lifted me up and carried me over to a nearby bush.

"Nicki... Nicki, you still there?" he asked, sitting me down next to him.

I nodded weakly and leaned my head on his shoulder which only made him wrap his arms around me like he was going to lose me forever.

"Don't fucking do that, Nicki..." his voice cracked. "Don't ever scare me like that." he pressed his lips to my forehead and I could feel his hands still trembling from fear.

I curled in closer to him, "I'm sorry, Jaden... For everything I put you and the rest of the team through."

"No, no... None of this is your fault, baby. I don't want you to ever think that. If anything, you've inspired us... You showed true determination and pure strength out there. You kept your promise to fight no matter what... And guess what... We don't have to worry about Fire Catcher anymore." he forced a small smile.

I looked up at him, "You don't think any of this is my fault?"

He shook his head, quickly wiping a tear from his eye with his knuckle, "No... Not at all..." he kissed my cheek this time, "Damn, Nicole... Dammit, you scared the living shit out of me. I can't believe you wanted me to kill you." he sighed, "I would never be able to live with myself with that on my conscious and not being able to see your face at the same time." he groaned.

I frowned up at him, "I'm sorry, you know I wouldn't hurt you on purpose... I..." I bit my lip for a moment, looking away as I finally told him, "I love you, Jaden."

"Alright, you two... On your feet." the cops came pulling Jaden and me apart and putting us in handcuffs. "You two are under arrest for auto theft, murder, possession of explosive weapons, and terrorizing a city. And that's just the beginning of the list."

I glanced over at Jaden and he held eye contact with me until it was broken apart when the cops led us in different directions. I knew he had something important on his mind but I guess I'll never know now that I might be getting locked away for life.

I didn't fight with the police. I actually let them peacefully shove me into their car and slam the door shut.

"You have the right to remain silent." The cop told me as he climbed into the driver's seat, placing his shades on and driving off with his sirens blaring.
