Chapter 29: Lifting Rocks
Amilyn made sure Chewie floated a safe distance above the base as they searched for where they would find the Resistance members. At least, wherever they would be able to escape. Rey sat behind CB-34 who began a scan for lifeforms. She pulled through the force trying to sense a presence.
The darkness. She was trying to hard. She sighed sadly. But then she felt a different presence. A tingling, soft paws of a creature.
"Chewie!" Rey exclaimed pointing to the foxlike creatures below them. "There!"
Dozens of crystal foxes were streaming out of a fissure in the mountainside. Chewie dived the Falcon to find a flat surface to land on.
"It appears there is an opening somewhere. Or at least where every they came from." CB-34 guessed a conclusion. Amilyn and Rey nodded, hoping everybody was alright.
(Poe's POV)
The Resistance fighter followed after the creature through the dark tunnel. Poe hoped they hadn't scared the creature into hiding, but the fox seemed to understand that they needed its guidance. Almost every Resistance member was struggling to keep up the pace.
Rose was being carried on a cot by a few members, and Finn trotted along anxiously behind them. Leia followed closely by everyone, and still had the cane for herself just in case. At the very back we're C-3PO and BB-8, which they didn't need to explain why they were in the back.
Threepio had covered every ounce of data about cave-ins, ebb nests, debilitating falls, fatal falls, crystal sickness, and starvation when the group emerged from the narrow tunnel into a natural cage, glittering with crystal outcroppings.
The crystal fox stood on top of a large boulder, eyes bright in the gloom. It studied the crew for a moment, the hopped down from its perch, loping over to fallen rocks in the back of the cavern. There, it somehow squeezed its crystal body inside a crack less than a third of center wide. It's fur jangled bumping against the rocks.
"No." Poe siad, peering into the narrow exit. He could see a string of light, but there was no way any of them could squeeze into the space. He felt his chin dip as Finn ran up to him. Poe couldn't help, but feel as if he had failed.
Failure. The worst feeling in the whole world. Other than the occasional feelings of sadness and pain that were also worse too. Yet, it felt worse when many people were depending on you.
(Amilyn's POV and switch to Poe's in middle)
Amilyn and Rey hurried down the Falcon's ramp and watched as a fox slid past them. The foxes fur chimed and snag, leaping form outcropping to outcropping to reach the top of the ridge. The foxes beauty mesmerized them for a moment before turning to where the fox had came.
Searching for where the fox had come from. It caught their eyes as they saw a crack in a massive wall of tightly packed boulders and rocks. They stepped back, to study the tumbled landscape. Rey turned to Amilyn with a small smile.
"Lifting rocks," She said smiling at Amilyn.
"Your first lesson." Amilyn smiled back, only to see the look of confusion on Rey's face.
"You're going to train me?" Rey asked Amilyn.
"Not just me. Leia could help. Now let's lift some rocks." Amilyn told Rey. Extending their hands out, they pulled with the force for the rocks to move. They heard the sound of rocks parting from each other. From a quaver to a slight trickle of dust and rock, it began to part.
Poe couldn't believe what he was seeing. The rocks were moving away from them, as he gestured to the others to move back. Finn watched, holding Rose's hand, as daylight streaks erupted amongst the crew. Leia smiled knowingly to who was lifting the rocks out of their way. C-3PO shuffled back and forth in distress at the sight of what was happening.
Finn and Poe merged from the tunnel to discover Rey and Amilyn standing in front of where the boulders had been. Their eyes closed, smiles inched on their faces. With a strange force, Amilyn pulled the rocks apart again, breaking the rocks into nothing but pebbles.
Opening their eyes, letting the pebbles crash to the ground. The other Resistance members stared in astonishment. Finn couldn't help, but think about what rose said about Rey. Rey could've changed even from those days she had spent with Luke, but the old Rey wasn't gone, she just had learned more.
"Amy!" Poe exclaimed.
"Rey!" Finn exclaimed. Both men went to hug their friends. Rey fell into Finn's arms, sobbing and laughing at the same time, and held him tight. Amilyn and Poe hugged tightly, smiling from their joy of seeing each other.
"What happened? Your hairs not in a braid." Poe asked Amilyn. But when they made eye contact, he felt as if something jolted inside him. This was where or a moment he could've kissed her. But he dismissed the idea. Yet, because of their close hug, their lips barely brushed against each others.
"A lot. Get everyone on the Falcon." She told him. He nodded and gestured to everyone to get on board the Falcon.
(Luke's POV)
Kylo looked up at him with a nasty snarl after another blade crashing against each other. They both regarded each other, their lightsabers humming between them. Their eyes locked with each other.
"I failed you, Ben." Luke said, "I'm sorry."
"I'm sure you are." Kylo replied, his voice sounded not sorry, "The Resistance is dead. The war is over. And when I kill you, I'll have killed the last Jedi." Kylo waited to see what Luke would say, bracing for a lighting fats strike of a lightsaber. But Luke simply raised an eyebrow.
"Amazing." Luke said. "Every word of what you just said was wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning. And I will not be the last Jedi."
"Amilyn." Kylo spoke, speaking her name as if it were poison. "You're chosen one. Chosen over me. Your own daughter you left for dead. She aligned herself as well as Rey with the old way that has to die too. No more masters. I will destroy them, you, and all of it."
Luke searched Kylo's eyes, finding them full of fury and hurt. Luke turned off his lightsaber, attaching back to his belt. His face changed to a calming, accepting face to Kylo.
"No. Strike me down in anger and I'll always be with you. Just like your father." Luke said.
Screaming, Kylo raised his lightsaber high above his head, rushing toward his now defenseless uncle. He brought the lightsaber crashing down above his masters head, meeting no resistance against flesh. As if he had passed through a ghost.
Kylo staggered back towards Luke, but recovered gos footing aimed another vicious cut at Luke. Once again his lightsaber met nothing, but an emptiness to where Luke stood. Luke smiled at his nephew sadly.
"See you around, kid." Luke said.
And then he disappeared like a ghost, leaving Kylo alone on the shattered plain, flakes of salt falling around him. His eyes basked with fury as he stared at the mine. The stone door they had blasted through with the canon with had blasted open.
"No! No!" Kylo howled.
(Amilyn's POV)
Amilyn watched as Rey helped lead everyone inside the Falcon. Medics carrying Rose on a cot inside, Finn rushing in behind them. Everyone got onto the Falcon, leaving Leia still there. Suddenly, something tugged at Amilyn through the force.
She felt the pull of sadness hearing a presence fade. Let go Luke. The words were whispered into her ears as she felt her father fade away. He was gone. He was dead.
Amilyn staggered back, with a gentle silent tear rolling down her face, pain filling her aching body. She looked to Leia who had felt the same disturbance, leaving them to exchange a sad look with one another. Leia walked in leaving, Rey with Amilyn.
"Amilyn....he's....." Rey began, knowing she had felt Luke's death.
"I know." Amilyn spoke softly as the ramp closed. Chewie pulled down the yoke sending them into the space.
