Chapter 20: awakening

A sudden sound of shooting came from the hallway as Poe had started his way to the shuttles docking bay. Instinctively, he took out his gun ready to see whatever was happening. He heard the shots were only to stun the perosn, someone was stopping Plan B. Holdo. Holdo, it had to be her.

Poe knew it was her as he ran back to the second bridge. He pulled his energy into getting back to Ackbar before Holdo attacked the bridge. They would need to get everyone off the ship before it was too late. He heard the footsteps of the woman's heels echoing behind him as he ran to the door of the bridge.

No matter what he had to do, it lead to some of the most difficult scenarios. This would be the worst for what remained of the Resistance. He knew he'd have to do everything he could in order to stop this rampage.

The door opened as Ackbar, Wexley, and D'Acy turned to him with the same look of surprise. "Holdo is going to attack the bridge. She's already stopped the people from getting on the shuttles. She has her gun set to stun." Poe warned them, catching his breath quickly.

"That daughter of a bitch." Wexley exclaimed, he was angry at the thought of Holdo.

"Admiral," D'Acy asked Ackbar, she was at loss for her words.

"Man, your stations. Set guns to stun. We will not start an all out war against each other. We are the last Hope of the Galaxy. Commander Dameron," Ackbar ordered turning to Poe. "We need to get out of here."

"I know, sir." Poe managed from his mouth. Gripping his gun tightly in his left hand, he watched as the sounds of footsteps grew closer to the second bridge. The six people still on the bridge held their guns ready, set to stun their fellow friends.

"Get ready!." Wexley warned the other three people still on the bridge with them. He had pulled his gun out of his holster. The others pulled theirs, and Ackbar took cover behind the console table.

The door opened to Holdo leading a small group onto the bridge. Their guns raised as they shot their way through the final people on the bridge. The blue blasts of lights came from everyone's guns, they're aiming for the friends fall. Poe frantically fired his at Holdo taking cover behind Ackbars chair.

He breathed heavily in frustration, as the others took cover behind the stationery of the ship. The sounds of a person falling, frantic shooting, and the beeping of the consoles rang in his ears. He kept from behind the chair,  pulling the trigger as he fired at a Chiss man next to Holdo. His second shot, sent the man onto the floor into a deep sleep.

Poe pulled himself back down behind the chair quickly, missing Holdo's shot for the head. He prayed it would end soon. Just soon enough to reach the closest planet, so they could escape the first order. They needed to stay alive, if they wanted the First Order to be destroyed. They needed to be able to fight another day.

Poe pulled himself to a conclusion, rethinking a small memory. He remembered everything that could fit into his brain. Every smile, every laugh, every heart ache, every friend, meeting Amilyn, meeting Finn, and destroying Starkiller Base. He was ready, he had to be. Because even if he hadn't been ready for this he was ready for Holdo's rampage to end.

The door that held Leia's medical recovering bed, began to shake. Poe paid little attention before, but now he'd have to at least figure out was happening to the medical chamber. He watched as smoke pillowed out of the chamber, sparks ignited in a frenzy on the door. Poe watched in confusion as he pulled himself up from his knees.

The misses of the firing, the people falling, and the door bursting with an unkown life. Poe watched as the others fired their guns, the door burst open. The metal door tossed to the side as a figure hobbled out into the firing. Poe felt his heart fill with happiness as he stood up watching the figure come closer.

"Leia." He whispered, barely audible for everyone else. He felt the blast hit him in the back of his head as he fell to the floor. Watching Leia, leaning on a cane fire a stun at Holdo. Darkness of sleep consumed his eyes.

(Leia's POV: Time Skip)

Leia watched as they walked Poe on a small medical bed onto the shuttle. She smiled looking at the heroic face of Poe cross her. Ackbar stood to the side watching intently as Leia examined Poe. "I can see why, Amilyn finds him a great companion." Ackbar told Leia, with a smile hinted at his face. Yet, that smile did not come, knowing there was no time for such expressions.

Several soldiers and C-3PO walked onto the shuttles ramp. Ackbar and Leia stood in a momentary silence, knowing one would have to speak. Leia pressed all her weight onto the small metal cane she had found by her medical bed. She was still draped in her dress from earlier with the ring Amilyn had given her on her left hand.

"I just got back on my feet, if it's all right with everybody. I'd like to stay that way," Leia said, quietly to Ackbar. Leia and Ackbar turned to each other knowing the same thing. The silence was broken when Ackbar spoke again.

"Leia."

"Ackbar." They embraced into a small hug, knowing only worse things could start happening.

"We're about to make planet fall," Leia said, once they parted. "If the First Order allows us down, I recommend we all shoot in the same direction." She stepped away from Ackbar, as D'Acy made her way up the ramp.

"Poe is one fighter." Ackbar spoke, happily. "I like him."

"Me too," Leia said with a smile. "Now board your transport." Ackbar raised an invisible eyebrow at his old friend. He knew what should happen, but the confusion of what Leia said was not what the resistance needed.

"For the transporters to escape, someone has to stay behind and pilot the cruiser." Ackbar reminded Leia, who fixed him a look he had known too well. Ever since they had first meet those 35 years ago, they had come to know each other on good terms. War friends, rebel friends, and friends over all. Ackbar had no doubt their turn of attack would be effective, but the time for speeches were over.

"I'm afraid I outrank you, Princess." Ackbar said gently, but pointedly. "And an admiral goes down with his ship."

Leia's chin dipped, as the sadness consumed her. "Too many losses......I can't do it anymore."

"Yes, you can. You taught me how." Ackbar replied, and Leia looked up in surprise. Leia almost smiled, but didn't knowing this was the last time she'd hear from Ackbar. The talks and the orders they had been through. The adventures, and his ideas. She'd miss that. She'd miss him more though.

"May the force.." Leia began only to hear Ackbar saying the sap act same words. They stopped, deferring to each other.

"You take it. I've said it enough." Leia said.

"May the force be with you always," Ackbar smiled. He watched as Leia got aboard the last shuttle. Moments later. taking off. "May it always." He knew this was his final stand against the darknesss of the evil he had fought for so long.
