EPISODE NINE
the gate.

THE SNOWBALL was finally here. max complained about it all week, but nova knew she wanted to go deep down. susan, max's mom, had taken both of the girls out one weekend to shop for an outfit.

the three were currently in the bathroom as susan did the girls hair, max wincing slightly as susan tugged too tight, "ow. that hurts." she complained.

"it's gonna be worth it. promise." susan smiled as she moved into nova who also pulled a face but allowed susan to do her hair. she ended up with two plaits that went into two ponytails on the top of her head, and it actually looked pretty cute.

nova looked to the side as she saw billy walk past the room with a small frown, not an angry frown, it was like he was sad, or guilty. she still sent him a glare as the tinest smile fell onto his lips, so small you could barely see it, but it was there, before walking away.

nova looked at where billy had been stood, a sad look on her face before she shook her head and looked back into the mirror.

"see. you both look pretty." susan smiled as max groaned whilst nova laughed.

"okay, now for your outfits." susan pulled them into max's room as she got out their outfits.

nova's dress was a small sage green colour, and it had a slight puff sleeve with small string to tie into a bow at the front.

billy had been forced to drive them, as usual, and the car ride was silent the whole way, right until they arrived. max got out immediately, and nova hesitantly stayed back, "ill be inside in a sec. don't wait up, okay?"

max looked unsure but nodded and got out, walking up to the school.

"you're annoying, you know that?" she spoke as billy rolled his eyes, "i didn't do anything."

"you know what i mean, billy." she spoke, and sat back. a few moments later, she spoke up, "why do you hate lucas so much?"

he turned to her, "i've told you before. you stay away from those types of people." a scoff left her lips at his words as she unbuckled her belt. "screw you, william."

"nova. you know...i..." he sighed, not finishing his sentence as she frowned. she thought of an idea, sitting up, she tapped the seat a few times. saying "what?" in morse code.

he looked at her, almost i'm shock as his eyes filled with some sort of emotion. "you remember?"

she cracked a smile, "of course." she nodded slowly.

"bye." she mumbled before getting out and rushing up the steps into the gym where dustin and steve were in the car. "nov?" steve called out.

she looked at him with raised brows, "hey...oh...my. dustin your hair..." she began, noticing the look on his face she smiled, "you look amazing!"

dustin beamed widely as steve smiled, silently thanking her as she grinned. "c'mon," they both walked in together as they greeted mr. clarke.

"looking very snazzy tonight, sir." he smiled at dustin, "thank you, my lord." nova couldn't help but snort as the two said hello to nancy and then walked over to the group who immediately gasped loudly at dustin's hair.

"holy shit, what happened to you?" mike exclaimed as dustins face dropped. "what do you mean?"

"dude!" lucas spoke with a smile, max widening her eyes, "your hair!"

"is there a bird nesting in there?" lucas poked dustins hair as nova snorted, but covered it up with a cough. "what do you mean! there's no bird nesting in here, asshole! okay? i worked hard."

a slow romantic song began to play as nova shared a look with max and they both grimaced as everyone began to choose a partner.

lucas suddenly let out a breath and spun around to face nova. "nova?" he spoke and she turned to him with a raised brow. "hey." he grinned.

she bit her lip to stop herself from laughing, "uhm...it's nice, right?" he looked around as she let out a quiet giggle, before controlling herself.

"wanna, um...you know? you and me?" he nodded to the dance floor and then raised his brows. she crossed her arms, a small smirk on her lips. "are you trying to ask me to dance?"

"no! of course not." he noticed the look on her face and shook his head. "unless...you want to." he pulled a face and she laughed.

"so smooth." she chuckled, taking his hand. "c'mon then." she pulled him to the dance floor as dustin, mike and will watched with smiles of shock, whilst max grimaced at the thought of someone dating her sister.

"uh, max. shall we?" dustin asked, max frowned slightly, "oh...sorry, dustin i was gonna sit this one out..." she said slowly as dustin frowned but then smiled with a nod.

"that's okay! you rest." he nodded.

max sighed, and held her hand out, "c'mon then. but this is as friends." she pointed at his face and he grinned, nodding as max sighed and walked with him.

lucas and nova got to the middle and she wrapped her hands around his neck as he stood frozen, then awkwardly put his hands on her waist as she laughed at him.

will started to dance with a girl, as nova looked back over at mike with a raised brow, but then went back to lucas and smiled softly at him. "you look beautiful." he blurted and she blushed slightly, smiling.

"sorry." he whispered as she laughed slightly, "you look great too, lucas." she smiled, embarrassed that her cheeks were probably as red as max's hair.

when every breath you take by the police started to play, nova smiled slightly. she liked this song. lucas found himself smiling at her smile, before realising what he was doing, and mentally slapped himself.

but before he could actually slap himself, nova had pulled him in closer to press her lips on his, shocking both of them as they pulled away, lucas eyes were so wide nova thought they would pop out. she felt better when he smiled widely, probably the biggest smile she had ever seen from someone as he leant in to kiss her again. once they pulled away, she smiled again and rested her head in his neck as the song played in the background.

it's hard with billy bc nova hates him so much, but there's that part of her that wants to love and care for him despite the bad shit he's done because he is her brother and she fully believes he is good deep down, and she desperately wants the old billy back,,

in a weird twisted way, billy does love nova a lot, but it doesn't stop the fact he is a complete asshole and he is racist towards lucas which is not okay whatsoever and i am not excusing that, but i really want their relationship to be complicated but also makes you feel kinda bad for the both of them.

obviously we know what happens to him next season, and it's gonna be very hard for nova, and especially in season four.  a lot of shit will go down in season four & i am so excited to write season three as it's my fave :)))
