Chapter 9:

A/N: After what has seemed like a month, with little to no inspiration, I've finally gotten the next chapter written. Heads up, this one is a bit traumatic and possibly will make some shed tears. I'm just warning you, and as always, enjoy, por favor!

That whole night was spent like there was no tomorrow, going over files after files, after files, but each time Kaldur and Current seemed to get close, something else would pop up that would bring controversy on that thing. Finally, at five in the morning, Kaldur stretched, and rose from his chair, where he had been seated. Current looked up, and asked, "Where are you headed, Kaldur?" The young Atlantian replied, "I am going to check on my girlfriend, Raquel, then make us something to eat. Are you hungry?", he asked. Current shook his head, and said, "Until I find my sister, I cannot eat or sleep. She is too precious for me to not worry about." "Oh, do you wish that I should stay, and help continue the search through the files? I can stay if need be.", Kaldur asked. "No, my boy, go find Raquel. Go eat. You'll need your strength, and your love to be present. Go to her. I will be fine in here, on my own.", Current responded. Kaldur walked away slowly, confused by the man's words.

He went down the hall to the bedroom quarters, and soon found Raquel's room. Knocking softly, he entered, and found her on her laptop, doing some searching. Kaldur asked, coming up behind her, "What are you looking at, Raquel?" She turned, her brown eyes wide, then she relaxed, when she saw it was him. She said, "I'm looking up some things for my birthday off Amazon." Kaldur looked at the site she was on, then asked, "And what do you want for it?" Raquel smiled, and rose, turning to face him. She said, "Well, I want you to be happy, that's what. Kal, you've been so worried about this for weeks now. Fighting T'orr D'eii, the Injustice League, and now all of this evidence and the case of your mom going missing, is making you stressed. Get some sleep please, or you won't be helpful if we have a mission." Kaldur said, determined, "I cannot. I must keep looking. There must be a reason." "Kal, you need sleep. You aren't like Conner, who can work on little sleep. You're the leader of this team, and you need to stop thinking of helping others for once, and focus on you. As your girlfriend, I hereby order you to get some sleep. And when I say 'some', I do not mean two hours worth. I mean a good solid eight or nine hours, tops.", Raquel instructed him firmly. "Alright, Raquel, I do assume you are correct. I have not been doing well on staying on a sleeping habit.", Kaldur said. Raquel kissed him on the cheek, and whispered, "Good. Now go to your room, and get rested. I'll do your part to keep looking, if you'll sleep, got it?" He nodded, and walked out. Raquel sure was hardheaded and stern, when she had to be. And he liked that quality the best of all her other ones.

When he was in his room, Kaldur sank down under the water in the small pool in his room. He closed his eyes, and felt every molecule of water touching his body. It felt like he was home. It even smelled of home. The seawater ran through his gills, as he entered the land of sleep.

Kaldur's eyes shot open, and he found himself back in Atlantis. He could see everything, from the pink and teal blue coral reefs, to the many colorful fish that swam near his home. It was wonderful. Turning, he saw his mother by his home. She had a bright smile, and a scene played out in front of him, from when he was a child, at the same age as the picture he found. He could hear her voice say, "Kaldur, come back inside, please. Do not play too far out." He remembered asking, "Why can I not go out beyond your vision, Mother?" His mom laughed softly, and said, "It is dangerous out there, my little fish. I do not want you to get swept away by the current, and you have not quite had much training yet on strength swimming. Come on inside. Your father is back from his trip across the ocean." Kaldur watches a little him swim into the house, and as he peers in, he sees himself, his mother, and a tall man dressed in grey and black armor, with his face turned away from the window. His father hugs his mother close, as he watches his younger self opening a present of a conch shell horn. The little Kaldur blows on the shell, and bubbles come from it, as well as a playful tune. The tune plays to that of "Under The Sea". The scene suddenly changes from the light, airy past, to a much darker scene, possibly of the future. His home was destroyed, and all that remained was a small tower. The ocean water was no longer the pristine blue, but was stained in red. He looked and saw his mother lying motionless in the sand, and a tall figure standing over her. He swam closer, and when the figure turned, he was stunned to see it was himself, and he was holding a knife in his hand, with blood on its tip. "N-no, I-I could not. I would not ever do this...I would never kill my mother." The much older looking version of him smirked, and said, "This is what you become. This is what you are."

Kaldur's eyes opened, and he immediately saw Raquel close to him, her soft hands on his shoulders. "Kaldur! Wake up!", she yelled, with tears in her chocolate eyes. He sat up, and asked, "What was happening, Raquel?" She said, "You were screaming, while sleeping. I could hear you from all the way in the kitchen." He got up, and stepped onto a towel by the entrance to the water. He asked, "I was screaming? How do I not remember this?" Raquel said, "You must have been having a nightmare." "Yes, I believe I was. It was a good dream, up until...", Kaldur paused. Raquel questioned, "Until what?" He finished, "Until I saw myself standing over my mother's dead body with a knife." "Oh, Kaldur...", Raquel said. Not even caring that he was still wet, she went up to him, and embraced him, putting her head in his chest. He softly touched her hair, and said, "It was merely a nightmare. Having it does not ensure it will happen." "Kal...", Raquel started. He answered, "We will be fine, Raquel. You will be fine. Now, please, fill me in on what you figured out in the case of my mother's disappearance, and all else that seems to be rising." Silently, they left the room, hand in hand, to discuss the issues once more at hand.
