Twenty-Two

Touring season had come again, and the band promised everyone that this tour would be better than the rest of their tours combined. They did their best to deliver. They brought new equipment, and did whatever they could to get the audience more involved with their shows.

The feedback they received was amazing. They were featured on The South Bank Show and were much more busy interview wise. Viva la Vida was played all over the radio, and was probably overplayed, or so Chris thought. He still found it humorous that Will had hated that song at first.

The time in which Gwen was needed in New York was nearing its end, which meant that they could move back to London very soon. The thought excited the whole band. It meant more time to work and better, more well-produced tracks.

She had promised that by that time their tour was completely finished, so would be her time in New York. He had clung onto this bit of hope, and decided that this tour would be the best one yet.

After each gig, the guys would hang out together, doing different things each night. Usually, they would go out and get dinner at a fancy restaurant or something, but sometimes they would go sightseeing or to the beach or to a park.

One memory of one of these nights was in Japan. Phil decided that they all needed a meal after a very sticky day on stage (nearly 90°!), so they all went to a sushi place. Jon and Chris were of course vegetarians, but the waiters didn't know that.

Will ordered a large steak, Phil ordered a plate of sushi, Guy ordered a veggie burger, and Chris ordered a salad. When the waitress asked Jonny what he wanted in Japanese, which he was still struggling to learn, he did his best to tell her that he was a vegetarian. Unfortunately, Jonny was struggling to understand the menu and the waitress didn't speak any English. The rest of the band was too busy laughing at him to help him, so eventually he gave up and told her to bring him whatever by simply waving her off.

"Why didn't you just point to Chris and be like 'what he's having'?" Guy asked after settling down.

Jonny groaned. "I can't speak any Japanese at all! I wasn't thinking, it was more panic, really." He sighed. "Oh well, it's just one time. I'm sure breaking the vegetarian diet one time won't hurt." He shrugged and Chris smirked.

"If you dislike it, we can share my salad, Jonny Boy," he offered.

"That's alright. You all eat your food, I'll eat mine. I'll definitely have to learn some Japanese after this."

The guys chuckled and talked about nonsense for awhile, and when their food came, Jonny realized that he was extremely nervous. Phil saw this and was quick to comfort him. "Hey, mate, are you alright? It's just a bit of meat! It'll be alright."

"I'm fine, it's just knowing that I'll be trying meat for the first time scares me a bit."

"Are you sure you don't want to share my salad, J?" Chris offered.

"Keep your food, Chris." He replied.

When the food came out, Jonny looked very nervously at the steak he had received. It was smaller in size than Will's, but it was still very greasy and what Jonny would describe as meaty. "Take a bite, Jon," Guy pushed.

With a deep breath, Jonny cut a tiny bit of steak, and took a bite.

"How is it, mate?" Will asked.

Jonny's face remained stoic for a minute before he laughed. "It's actually really good! Why wasn't I eating meat sooner?"

They all laughed. "I guess that means I reclaim the title of 'Sexiest Male Vegetarian' then?" Chris asked with a wink.

This made Jonny laugh harder. "You wanker! You were always much sexier than me!"

Chris thought about that statement with a chuckle as he sat in his hotel room alone. Jonny, Chloe, and Violet were all sharing a room, as were Guy, Will, and Phil with their wives and kids, leaving Chris alone.

He wished Gwenyth wasn't so busy and that her and their kids could come and watch him perform. The rest of the guys had their spouse and kids, whereas he was limited to phone calls, which, with the changing time zones, had proven to be a bigger task than he had originally thought it to be.

He missed his green-eyed guitarist, the one he had met ten years ago (it had already been ten years!) that day his rocket crashed.

He never did repair that rocket, he thought with a chuckle.

Did he still have to return back to Ollama? He wondered. The president would probably want him to bring his kids back, at least.

The thought made him shudder. His children at the mercy of his president, on a planet where even love was forbidden. He didn't want to go back, and he especially didn't want to take his kids.

Then, he began to wonder what would've happened if he had just stayed behind on Ollama. If his father hadn't accepted the mission, or if he had completed the mission, and Chris could've just lived his life on Ollama. Grow up, reproduce, kill his girl, and raise his kids. Would he have become a slave to the system? Would he have still loved his kids as he did now? Would he have had the heart to neglect his daughter as people on Ollama are instructed to do?

Why were women on Ollama treated so poorly there? Here on Earth, at least, the women were no better or worse than the men were. Despite getting much better here, there was still work to do towards women's rights.

Like with the whole campaign with Make Trade Fair and OXFAM, Chris wanted to be able to help every organization that needed it and deserved attention. Women's rights, clean water for all, ending world hunger and poverty, all of these acts he felt needed to be brought to attention. He wanted to donate money to be able to help these causes. The more he thought about it, the better he felt.

Earth really isn't such a bad place after all, he told himself.

"Good show, chaps!" Phil told the band after they came off stage following their most recent performance. "Except for Chris forgetting the words to Trouble," he said with a laugh.

Chris smiled. "It's been a long day!" They all chuckled. "Besides, I wasn't the only one who messed up."

They all turned to Jonny, who blushed. "Well I'm not the lead singer," he teased.

Chris laughed. "J! You naughty guitarist!"

"You lads interested in going out tonight?" Guy asked, already bored it seemed.

Jonny grimaced. "Sorry, mates, but Chloe and I are taking Violet out sightseeing."

Chris' face fell. That meant another lonely night in his hotel room. Going out wasn't as fun without Jon with them.

Jonny saw this and was quick to cheer him up. "Chris, do you want to come with us? I'm sure Chloe will understand."

Quickly, Chris' mood improved. "Are you sure it'll be alright? I don't want to interupt anything with Chloe."

Jonny smiled. "Nonsense! Chloe won't mind and I'm sure Violet would love to spend some time with her almost-uncle."

Will nodded at Chris. "Go on, mate. It's better than doing nothing in your hotel room."

"I did offer to hang, you know," Guy adds.

"We all know what you were planning to do, mate!" Phil laughed, referring to after last show, where Guy offered to take them all out to eat and he ended up taking them to a bar and getting wasted (again).

Guy blushed, but cracked a smile. "Alright, I'm busted."

"Come on, Chris! Come hang with Chloe and me!" Jonny said, practically begging at this point.

"Alright, Jonny Boy. I'll come with you."

Jonny leapt in joy and Chris' heart fluttered. You're married, he reminded it.

Phil laughed at Jonny's innocence and wished him good luck. "With what?" Jonny asked.

"With Chris of course!" Guy chimed in with a chuckle.

"Hey!"

Chris playfully punched Guy's arm, who punched him back harder. Chris returned the punch, even harder, and this kept going until Phil broke it up, both of their arms were bruised and they were doubled over in laughter.

"Come on, Chris. We're gonna be late," Jonny said, pulling Chris away from his attacker and oddball group of friends.

I'm going on a date, his heart said. A date with Jonny!

Though his mind told his heart to hush up, as he knew Jonny's girlfriend and current lover was going to be there, still, a small part of him was hoping that his heart was right.
