Twenty-Four

Jonny's wedding day was a bittersweet day for Chris. On one hand, he knew Jonny still loved him. He had told him so that night in Hong Kong. He hadn't said it since, but when Jonny said something, he usually meant it. Still, what he hadn't known about that night in Hong Kong was that Jonny had proposed to Chloe while he was dealing with that annoying, flirty fan. When Chris had been told that, he had felt betrayed. He thought that meant something special in their relationship, but apparently it was something special in the "bigger relationship" in his life. However, after Jonny had explained to him that what he had said wasn't a lie and that he had still enjoyed their night and missed their relationship immensely, Chris felt better.

"Do you remember that night when we were on the dock and I was crying and practically begging for you to take me back later?" Jonny had asked him.

Chris had nodded and wiped the tears from his eyes.

"That was after I proposed. I knew I had to propose or Chloe was gonna start getting suspicious of us. So I had to, but that doesn't mean that the time you and I spent together meant any less to me. Everything I said I meant."

Chris nodded. "I understand, J. It's ok."

He thought about that as he stood next to Jonny on the altar, waiting for Chloe to walk down the aisle. Was this how Jonny had felt during his own wedding? Trying to find any bit of hope to grasp onto? He suddenly felt horrible about leaving Jonny in the dark for so long.

At least Chris had some hope. Jonny had been given nothing.

However, it was harder to compose himself when Jonny announced that Chloe was pregnant again.

They had been doing so well the past couple years. Chris and his family had moved back to London and everything was going well, even with Jonny being married now. Chris loved being with Chloe, especially around dinner time, and she made Jonny happy, and seeing a happy Jonny made Chris smile unconsciously. Even their songs had become happier, it seemed.

They had been working on a new album titled Mylo Xyloto and the songs on there were a good representative of how the entire band had been feeling lately.

However, that new child...

If Jonny loved Chris, then why did he go and fuck Chloe again? Violet was almost four, Apple was almost seven, and Moses was almost five. All of them were nearly old enough to be taught about divorce. They could've gotten back together right after the release of the album if they'd wanted! But no, Jonny had to go and ruin it.

Chris had broken down again, and thought about everything. Did Jonny really love him, or was it just an act to make him feel better? Would life be better if he asked the president to send him back to Ollama?

He wanted to kill himself, just like had he had wanted to back during the making of X&Y. He needed Jonny's reassurance that he still loved Chris, but even then, he didn't know if he'd believe him.

He looked down at his wrist, at the faint scar of the mistake he had made years ago when he felt like this before. There was no way he was going down that road again. He had promised Will and Jonny that he wouldn't cut ever again. He hadn't promised them that he wouldn't kill himself, though...

Stop it, he scolded himself. Jonny is allowed to have more than one child, he thought.

Suddenly, he heard the front door of his house close and he wiped his eyes and shook the bad thoughts from his head. "Chrissy! I'm home!" Gwen cried from the front room. Their relationship had changed a lot. No longer were they the picture perfect couple that they used to be. Chris' feelings for Jonny were slowly beginning to show, and it was starting to put a strain on their relationship. It was a good thing that Mylo Xyloto was almost complete, because Chris' happy persona had certainly disappeared.

Chris took a deep breath and walked to the living room, where his wife and two kids were waiting for him. "Hi, Daddy!" Moses called and ran to hug his leg.

"Hi, Daddy!" Apple copied, and also ran to hug her father, though she reached up to his stomach.

"Goodness, you were only gone for a couple hours!" Chris said with a laugh. If there was anything that could make him laugh, it was his two goofy children.

"Yeah, but we missed you!" Apple said. She was growing up to look more and more like her mum, and Moses more like his dad.

Gwenyth smiled slightly at the display. "Your mum wasn't too mean to you, was she?" Chris teased, winking at Gwenyth, who playfully rolled her eyes.

"No, Daddy! Of course not! Mummy isn't mean!" Moses said, laughing, his arms still wrapped around his dad's legs.

"No, you have a very nice mum indeed."

The children finally got bored of gripping onto Chris, and went into their rooms to play.

"Chris, we need to talk," Gwenyth said in a serious tone.

Chris bit his lip and his chest tightened. He hoped this wouldn't be anything about where there relationship had gone.

They sat together on the couch, and Gwen took his hands in hers. "Look, this is really hard for me to say, but... I think we should think about a divorce."

Ouch.

Chris had been right, and he hated that. Yes, he wanted to divorce, but he wasn't ready yet. If Jonny was having another kid, then they couldn't divorce yet. Jonny wasn't ready yet, so he wasn't ready either.

"Gwen..."

"No, hear me out," she stated firmly. Chris bit his lip and listened. "I think our relationship has taken a turn for the worse. You've been stressed recently about who knows what, but when I ask if you wanna talk, you deny that anything is wrong. You deny me any time I wanna have sex, even if I bring protection, which I always do. You spend more time with the kids than me, and you always use them as an excuse to avoid spending time with me. It just feels like a one-sided relationship, and I'm offering this for your own good, Chris."

Everything she had said was true. Chris didn't want to admit that he wanted to divorce, that he needed to divorce, but that it couldn't be now. He thought for a moment before replying.

"I understand. Everything that you've said is true, but in all honesty, I don't want to divorce," he lied. "Maybe, what we should do, instead of making any hasty decisions, is go to a couple's therapy. We'll see what they advise and we'll do the best we can to put things back together." He squeezed her hand.

She sighed. "Alright, you're right. Let's do it."

Chris sighed of relief and kissed her cheek.

When he went back to their bedroom, he hopped onto the bed and sighed. He picked up his phone and decided to send an angry text message to Jonny.

hey j

i almost just lost Gwen. she asked to divorce, and if your wife weren't pregnant with your baby, i would've. we were so close, jonny. so close, and u fucking ruined it with your sweet tasting dick. and yes i remember the taste.

i want u back, j. i want u back so bad. but clearly u don't want me because u fucking made us start over. another kid. so late. i wouldn't have minded if it were back in 2009 when u were married, but u waited until almost 2011 j. when we were so close!

the deal is off, j. ive never broken a promise, but if you don't wanna keep ur end of the deal, fine. so be it.

don't text me. if u wanna talk, call, and i'll come over. maybe. don't count on it

As soon as Jonny received the message, he began to cry. He hadn't known Chris was ready to get back together so soon. He thought he still had another few years.

Now they would never get back together.

He still wanted Chris, with every fiber of his being, he wanted Chris to be his boyfriend again. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with the singer with the ocean blue eyes. How could he have been so stupid? Why had Chloe asked him for another child with her soft brown eyes and sweet smile? Why hadn't he just refused?

He buried his head in his hands. Violet walked over to him and tugged on his pants leg, and the bearded man couldn't resist his little one, picking her up and sitting her on his lap. "You've caused me a lot of trouble, missy," he teased her.

She flashed him a grin and wrapped her little arms around his neck. "Aw."

He kissed her cheek before putting her back on the floor. "What did you want, hm?" He asked.

"Food!" She squealed and smiled.

Jonny chuckled. "And chocolate?"

"Chocwate!" She laughed. Chris had turned his little girl into a chocoholic.

Oh Chris.

"Alright, fine. Is a banana alright? It's almost dinnertime."

She nodded. "And chocwate!"

"You can have some chocolate, too."

After Jonny gave her a snack, he turned on the telly for her, he sat on his bed and called Chris.

"Jonny?"

"Chris, please let me explain-"

"Don't bother," Chris said, stopping him. "I don't want to put you in anything that you're not willing to do."

"Chris..."

"Jonny, if you didn't want us, why didn't you just say so? I just want you to be happy."

"Chris, I do want us. I want it more than anything in the world. Please come over. I'll explain everything."

There was silence for a moment. "Fine."

From Jonny's tone, Chris knew that he had overreacted. Jonny was on the verge of tears. He had made the poor man cry, and he suddenly felt awful.

Chris grabbed his guitar and called a cab to take him over to Jonny's. It was only a ten minute walk, but he wanted to get to Jonny as soon as possible.

When he knocked on the door, Jonny did his best to dry the tears from his eyes and look alright for Chris. He opened the door gently, and Chris set down his guitar and pulled Jonny into a hug. "I'm sorry, J," he whispered. "I didn't mean it."

They hugged on Jonny's front step for awhile, before Chris pulled away nervously and asked where Chloe was. "Away with friends for the weekend."

"So you're alone today?"

Jonny nodded.

"Hello there, Vi," Chris said when he entered. "You're getting big."

"Hi, Uncle Chris!" She said.

Chris smiled briefly. "Your daddy and I will be in his bedroom if you need us, ok?"

She nodded and turned back to her program.

They went in the bedroom and closed the door. Jonny spoke me. "Are you really done with us? Have you given up?"

Chris sighed. "If you still want this, then of course not."

"Please let me explain the whole pregnancy thing."

"Please do."

Jonny explained how Chloe had wanted another child and how he was afraid that she had become suspicious of them after that morning she had found them in bed together in Hong Kong, so he didn't deny her. "Besides, I didn't think you were quite ready yet, and I love Violet so much..." Jonny broke down again.

"It's ok, J. I understand."

They sat in silence for a minute. "I started working on a song," Chris said finally. "Though the lyrics aren't exactly accurate now." He chuckled and handed the notepad to Jonny.

"Up in flames,
Up in flames,
Up in flames,
We have slowly gone..."

"Did you really think our relationship was going up in flames?" Jonny asked innocently.

Chris nodded. "I thought I had messed up. I thought you'd never want me back."

Jonny smiled and half-jokingly kissed his cheek. "I love you too much to ever hate you, Chris."

Chris laughed. "Good to know."

"Do you have any music to the lyrics?" Jonny asked.

"No, I was hoping you could take care of that."

"Hmm..." Jonny grabbed his guitar from his closet and started strumming some notes. "I don't know, it might be better with piano."

"I don't assume you have a piano in your closet."

Jonny laughed. "Not yet!"

"I'll call up the guys, maybe we can work on something when Chloe gets back," Chris suggested.

Jonny smiled. "Sounds great."

How they had both gone from completely devastated to hopeful again in a matter of minutes, neither of them knew, but both of them were excited for the years to come.
