Chapter Sixteen

Sparkface felt the calming, rhythmic thump of her legs racing over the ground. The twoleg dens were still in their unnatural straight lines. The thunderpath she was by split into a horizontal path that was fast approaching. She slowed down, bent over, and dropped the Tinylight on the ground as she gulped for air.

Pricking her ears, she picked the Tinylight back up and raced across the thunderpath, leaped on the wooden barrier in front of her and paused.

Is this the right place? She wondered, gazing at the trees in front of her. Cat scent wafted through her nostrils. She scrunched her nose at the musky scent and recognized it as ThunderClan's.
She lept down and hid in the bushes.

Sparkface heard voices in the distance. She closed her eyes for a moment, hoping that the ThunderClan cats wouldn't detect her.

"Foxpaw!" A distant warrior snapped. "This is a border patrol! We can get prey once we see to the border!" The apprentice's response was inaudible.

A few heartbeats later, Sparkface watched the ThunderClan cats renew the border's scent at the river's edge, past Sunningrocks.
"That squirrel is already gone." Foxpaw muttered. The russet brown tom rushed back into the forest after he marked the border.
His mentor and another warrior followed the apprentice.

Sparkface breathed a sigh of relief and ran along the river's edge, paused behind the sunningrocks, then raced again by the water's edge.

I'm almost home! She thought gleefully, the Tinylight in her jaws. She jumped the small stream and headed across the twoleg path and breathed a relieved sigh that yes, she was finally in WindClan. The golden she-cat paused for a few moments, gathering breath for her jog to camp. Her muscles ached from the long sprint, but she knew that the Clan would finally regard her as "not a failure" when she arrives.

Sparkface ran the last few tree-lengths, and, weary, hesitated at the last fox length. The sun was not as bright as it had been, and her long shadow draped across the grass-covered empty ground. She held the Tinylight tightly in her jaws, but decided she would let the small device have an introduction on its own. She put the Tinylight into a patch of long grass, gave a long sigh, and padded to the entrance of camp.

Lionfrost, dropping a rabbit on the fresh kill pile, was the first to see her. Sparkface inhaled sharply, with joy to see her brother and then pain when she grimly remembered the last words he said to her.
Lionfrost hadn't forgotten that fateful day, either. He stared at her with a heart of stone; anger slipping into his forest green eyes.

"Lionfrost..?" Sparkface mewed, voice trembling. My own brother doesn't even want me anymore.
The orange tabby sharply turned around and flicked his tail dismissively.

By this time, many other of her clanmates had noticed her arrival, and, as Sparkface looked around, many didn't have the smiling faces she had always longed for.
Lionfrost, who had gone into the leader's den, emerged again with Gorsestar right behind him.
The leader merely gave her a nod of acknowledgement as he padded towards her. "Welcome back." He greeted coldly, with slitted eyes.
She took a step back and plastered a guarded expression on her face.

"I'm surprised to see you." He continued, exchanging a glance with Lionfrost.

"Lionfrost said that you had jumped off of Outlook Rock, and that he tried to save you." The brown tabby sat down and watched her expectantly. "Why don't you tell me what really happened?"

"Well um..." Sparkface stuttered, not ready for the explanation. She searched through her memories quickly, then found what she was looking for. "It was actually a dog..." Sparkface started, glancing at Lionfrost, "We both ran towards it but then Lionfrost ran away. I woke up in a Twoleg den, and the Twolegs made me feel better, but I ran away the first time I got the chance."

Gorsestar nodded, showing no expression.

"And..." The she-cat began again, "I took something from those Twolegs... I think it will help us." She backed away slowly, then jogged out of camp and returned with the Tinylight.

"I call it a Tinylight, and it can help us in the dark." Her eyes twinkled as she told the Clan about her discovery. "You push this button.." She pressed the red button and the device clicked as it shone with all of it's might.

There was a chorus of gasps and murmurs of approval in the clan, who had clustered around the three cats once there was something of interest.
The leader blinked with curiosity. "Yes.. this might help us. You have finally proven your worth, Sparkface." He drew out with the slightest bit of pride.

Gorsestar picked up the Tinylight in his jaws and padded to his den, placing the new device at the entrance.

"This," Gorsestar began in a loud voice, "This Tinylight will be used in the darkest of nights, when seeing would be of the essence." He paused, looking for examples. "It can be used in the medicine den, where Hawkfeather would need to treat a patient, or if a kit went missing in the middle of the night. This will be a great asset to WindClan."

The leader paused, glanced over the crowd and found the cream-colored she-cat. "Sparkface deserves hero's treatment."
Sparkface was beaming, and she puffed out her chest in pride.
