Character: Karmi, Big Hero 6: The Series
Song: 'Million to One' from Cinderella 2021, sung by Camila Cabello (would be a good voice for Karmi's singing). Song lyrics are slightly edited
Because there aren't enough fics out there that show the world how brave, smart, and strong she is. Karmi's so much more than just a fangirl, and we all need to acknowledge that.
Here I go again
I'm imagining a world of mine, unlike the one I'm in
Daydreaming again of when I'll get a chance
Karmi sat down on her desk, surfing through a website on her computer. She briefly glanced at the number of reads her story about Big Hero 6 had gotten, and closed the tab. A news feed popped up about her web series based on her fanfiction blowing up—she closed that alert. Karmi was sick and tired of the situation she was in. Sure, the fanfiction was amazing, but there was so much more she wanted to prove to the world. This wasn't the first time she dreamed of another place where she was respected for who she was as a person, about her concrete achievements that would actually make the world a better place. She didn't graduate from university with a BioTech degree for nothing. The last time she had a chance to prove her worth had been a flunk, what with Liv and Di and Sycorax and *sighs* Captain Cutie and (ugh but not ugh) Hiro and just...drama.
There's a world that understands
Where you don't hear the whispers in the room you're walking in
Daydreaming again, all I need is a chance
Karmi knew that she was probably overthinking everything again, but she was confident that even though she was young, she would be able to earn her place in the world of science, in the world of BioTech. Heck, she lived in New Urbem now, one of the most advanced cities in the world! There were bound to be opportunities. Since last time's internship had been a hoax, she was determined to make it up, not just to herself, but to others as well to prove she wasn't bad at all. Whenever she walked into a room, she had always heard constant whispering and judging of her, even in her new university. Some people failed to understand she was more than just 'that cute fanfic writer' and 'Captain Cutie's girlfriend in the TV series'. Then again, it seemed like the Captain had found someone 'new', a superhero called Infinity who could manifest vortexes or something. They had been going out for six months. No, she wouldn't allow herself to think of her pastimes anymore. Karmi knew she was put in this world for BioTech, but all she needed was a chance to set her life back on the right track again. Then, she would be recognized for what she was truly good at.
When I see people staring at me
I tell them just wait and see
I know who I'm gonna be
I know who I'm gonna be
The world's half-asleep
It's gonna wake up and see
Karmi made a promise to herself that whenever people were staring at her who only saw her for the entertainment legacy she built up, she would prove them wrong. She knew who she was going to be when she found her place in the spotlight. The spotlight she worked hard for and wasn't going to give up on. She felt like the world hadn't fully opened its eyes yet, and there was so much more to her that she was about to achieve. Look out, world. She thought. I've got ideas. BioTech ideas, not just Big Hero 6 ideas.
Karmi shut down her computer and turned on the radio, massaging her temples. She just needed a teensy-weensy break. The singer, Natalie, was in the middle of her song and had just begun to sing the chorus. Karmi instantly loved the song and felt that she and Natalie had similar aspirations:
If it's a million to one
I'm gonna be that one and
If it's a shot in the dark
I'm gonna be the sun
And I just can't afford to be wrong
Even when I'm afraid
You're gonna know my name
Yeah, you're gonna know my name
Her sentiments exactly.
I can barely sleep
'Cause my heart is always racing, chasing, pacing 'round the room
Living carefully is something I don't wanna do
It was nighttime, and Karmi let out an exhausted sigh as she snuggled into her covers. However, after an hour of tossing, tumbling, and turning, she was still wide awake. There's so much to think about, she thought. There are so many different roads to take to achieve my goal. I have to plan how I'm going to go forward. Karmi spent another two hours being giddy and excited, brainstorming ideas on her career path. She'd been like this ever since she graduated from university, which was just about two weeks ago. But this was the longest she'd ever spent, and it felt like something was constantly guiding her to race and chase her dreams ever since school was done. She was done with the dull ache of the past two years, and if she could, she would go back to San Fransokyo in a heartbeat, not just because of you-know-who, but because that was the place she grew up in, even if crime rates were high and the city was dangerous.
It was then that Karmi decided she wanted to work with superheroes. She was positive that her BioTech reinforcements could help them with everything they needed: tranquilizers for supervillains, special fabrics on superheroes' suits made out of plant fiber, even a gauntlet powered by some type of chemical fuel...she'd have to work on all of these ideas, but at least she was getting somewhere!
When I see people staring at me
I tell it just wait and see
I know who I'm gonna be
I know who I'm gonna be
The world's half-asleep
It's gonna wake up and see
I finally know who I'm going to be, Karmi smiled, satisfied. She fell asleep thinking of the song she had heard on the radio earlier in the day.
If it's a million to one
I'm gonna be that one and
If it's a shot in the dark
I'm gonna be the sun
And I just can't afford to be wrong
Even when I'm afraid
You're gonna know my name
You're gonna know my name
***
And I can see her now and then
The one I know that I could be
I see her laughing
'Cause she knew all along in her head
So when the light is hard to see
She's telling me
Karmi envisioned herself achieving her goals. She knew she was going to be the one standing on that podium, laughing, smiling, and thanking everyone. She was going to be the achiever, the go-getter, and the inspiration for fellow members of the BioTech community to improve the world and keep moving forward with ideas and creativity. Even if things went wrong, the successful woman that she would most definitely become would be waiting for her. And even if others only appreciated her for who she was on the surface, she knew it would only be a matter of time until she would all impress them with her works yet to come. She had done it before; she would do it again and again because that voice of encouragement was telling her...
If it's a million to one
I'm gonna be that one and
If it's a shot in the dark
I'm gonna be the sun and
I just can't afford to be wrong
Even when I'm afraid
You're gonna know my name
Karmi fell asleep contentedly with only one thing on her mind:
You're gonna know my name.
