“please, I promise we'll do nothing and just leave peacefully, As--” Fergus took a deep breath as he heard Ref flinch after getting a hit on the head with the end of the gun.

“Silence and get down like the rest of 'em, Mongrel” The same voice said, annoyance and boredom in his voice.

Fergus kept his eyes in the mutant, blinking as his arms stretched inhumanly long. “okay, we're all clear here man. Let's get out of here before someone else comes snooping.”

Fergus on the ground, his hands behind his head but his eyes were on the gun that was tangling beglfore his eyes. That was his chance and he wasn't going to let it pass without trying. Like a snake going for the kill, Fergus reached for the gun but he was too slow. The gun was suddenly turned towards him and he shield his face. “Gus no!” the gun went off, and it was as if time stood still.

All the green eyed teen heard was the sound of his own heavy breathing and the echo of a trigger being pulled. But he felt no pain.

Slowly, reluctantly he opened his eyes that he had closed in fear. He dropped his hands, seeing two bullets, still in the air just five inches from his eyes. He gulped, looking at the green hue that seemed to keep the bullets from killing him.

They dropped on the ground, clinking against the rough surface. He looked up, seeing the two men staring at him wide eyed. Even thought the thieves had scarfs that covered their lower faces, both of their eyes were still visible. And their eyes looked exactly the same, bright blue.

“Get on the ground.” the one holding a gun growled, while the other man hurried outside, somehow carrying alll the bags with money. “on the ground!” Fergus stared the man in the eyes, his face hard as he looked at the man starting to panic. “Gus! Get just down!” he heard Ref beg him, and just for the sake of him, he fell on his knees and raised his hands, for the second time this day.

Like a mere ghost, the man disappeared with his fellow thief and the money. Fergus ticket his jaw, he wanted to help. But he really hadn't been much use.

He pushed himself up, ignoring Refster who was hissigg at him to quit it.

He couldn't, he just couldn't stop himself. He ran outside, the glass beneath his old converse creaking. He shot down the street, towards the grey Toyota that he saw one of the thieves enter.

Adrenaline rushed in his veins as he pulled the door open, grabbing the wide-eyed thief from the collar of his black jacket and pulling him out of the vehicle, throwing him on the cement ground with an angry growl.

Unimaginable anger rose in Fergus, he felt the need, want to kill that guy. All that desire for his blood was nearly blinding the teen.

The rage, he could hardly control it.

But before he could throw a punch in, he felt someone's fingers close around his throat and lock there, pulling him slightly up.

Fergus tried to pry their fingers from his throat, growling in anger as he did so. He was tossed aside, the teen stumbled away, coughing at his dry throat and panic as he eyed the econd thief, the elastic mutant.

“Stay down, wannabe hero.”

“Gus!” He heard through his wheezing Ref calling for him, his friend halted and bent down next to him, patting his back as he kept asking about his well being. “m'fine”

“what the heck is wrong with you!” Ref angrily asked, standing up as he gripped his golden hair that was covered in dust and dirt.

Fergus didn't answer as he pushed himself up as well, massaging his aching neck. “they got away.”

“of course they did idiot! They were mutants! They were two, you're only one, it wouldn't of had been fair fight anyways!”

Fergus frowned down at his friend who was glaring daggers at him. “only one of them was a mutant, and I'm not like them Ref.” Fergus said lowly, narrowing his eyes.

They both turned towards the loud crash, having forgotten about the big fight going on. By the looks of it, it was getting a lot closer to them. Police had been gathering at the side lines, trying to evacuate people from the harms way as fast as possible.

“Okay, I'll kick your stupid ass later Gus, but for now, I think we should get out of here, please.” Ref asked, sighing in annoyance when he didn't get the answer he was hoping for. “we have to help the people get away, come on, let's help the police.”

Before they could take another step, something suddenly exploded next to them, making them both be thrown off balance by the heatwave. Fergus pushed himself up, not understanding why the world was whistling and stars were dancing.

He tried to scream for Ref, only realizing he couldn't hear his own voice, only he whistling in his ears.

Fergus shook his head, trying to clear his vision of the dust that was floating around them. Slowly, he started getting hisbeharing back. He notice a mop of bright hair in the corner of his eye. Ref was being helped up by a passing vigilante.

“Hey man, can you hear me? Are you good? How many fingers am I holding up?” the man in red suit asked Ref, who was only gawking at the Spidermans mask instead of looking at the three fingers the vigilante was holding up. “Hey? Can you hear me? Are you injured?”

“you're Spiderman.”

“yeah, thats me man! But you know, it would be safer if you go to the next block, there are ambulance cars and let yourself be checked over alright? I gotta get going, but it was night meeting you, stay safe man!” and the man with high pitched voice webbed away from the gawking teens.

“s-s-s-s”

“Say it Ref.”

“S-spiderman. That was Spiderman. And he touched my shoulder.”

“I saw that. By the way, your bandana is about to fall over your eyes. Come on, I don't wanna be blown up.” something above then exploded again, making them both duck and cover their heads, definitely pulling them both back to reality.

The fight with Axis had suddenly gotten near them again, and the teens had no plans of dying that day.

Fergus cursed, pulling Ref away and leaving himself in between the rough fight and his best friend. “run, run Ref!”

But the blonde suddenly halted, turning his wide eyes towards Axis and Tony Stark who were shooting at each other, throwing in curse words and burning comebacks.

For the first time in his life, Remington Lennon was not watching his childhood hero or the scary, familiar villain fighting.

His scared, wide eyes had met with dark, frightened ones. A girl was hiding behind a dumpster, her petite hands over her ears as tears streamed down her face. No one but Ref had noticed the hiding, scared child.

And that was a one second decision he had to make.

To turn his back to those large, scared eyes and save himself along with his best friend and feel forever guilt in his anxious heart. Or take the risk and try to save the young soul.

No decision had ever came easier to him, like a bullet he shot out towards the field of danger.

Stunned, Fergus looked as his friend suddenly changed direction. Instead of running away from the fight, he had started running directly towards it.

Axis turned, raising his robotic hand from a grenade that had been thrown at him. He saw Ref, and that had one of the most scariest moments of Fergus' life.

Nothing could ever compare to that feeling that came next, to that horror that crushed his scared facade.

A bomb, or plenty of them, went off and the world around Fergus was once again filled with debris, broken glass and dust.

He screamed, he screamed so loud his voice was raw as he pushed himself up ignoring the blood and glass that covered his knees and arms. His face was almost unrecognisable under all the dust and blood that tripped from his nose.

“Refster! Ref!” He stumbled over the debris, his wide eyes trying to see the familiar red bandana or the bright hair of his best friend. He breathed hard, the ugliest kind of fear making him shake all over as he ran towards the place his friend was supposed to be.

The villain had dissappeared, making the place go silent expect Fergus' raw screams for his best friend.

“Answer me!” he halted, seeing the familiar body laying on the ground through the dust. Like a young colt learning to walk, Fergus stumbled towards Refster, his legs almost forgetting how to move. “Ref!”

He slid on the ground next to the blond boy, ignoring the shards of glass going deeper into his legs.

Ref was shielding a small body with his own, his hands around the wide-eyed girl were bloodied and burned to the bone. Fergus pryed the girl from his hands and pushed her away, gently tugging Ref closer to himself.

Fergus didn't even realize there were tears streaming down his ashen face, leaving stains on the dust that covered his cheeks. “Ref? Man, open you eyes!” he croaked out, shaking the man.

Refster slowly blinked his unfocused eyes open, making Fergus bit back another sob. “I-I'm dying Gus, I-I c-can't feel my hands nor my feet, I don't-I don't wanna die Gus, help me.” he quietly croaked out, fear in his eyes making Fergus' heart clench.

Fergus cleaned his friends face from the dirt, not believing any of it was real. “you won't, you hear me? You'll live man. You're alright Refster, I promise you.” Fergus whispered, looking as his life long friend shook his head and looked up sadly.

“I don't-I'm sorry man, take-” he coughed up the liquid that was thick as honey but red as death, it tripped down his chin. “take the bandana, it-it belonged to m-m-my mom. I-I love you man.” and Fergus did, gently, he untied the red bandana like machine, letting Refs golden hair fall around his dirtied face.

“I love you too man, you're my brother.”

Refster gulped down the pile of blood, unable to stop his teeth from chattering. He was starting to feel numb and cold, so, so very cold. Refster looked up at his best friend, a man he could call brother. “Do a card trick, Gus.” he said weakly.

“Ref, stop, you'll be--”

“Fergus.”

With shaky hands, he roamed the inside of his pocket, keenly looking at his friend, making sure his eyes were still open.

With a deck of cards and tears in his eyes, Fergus made the cards in front of Refs half closed eyes disappear and reappear again, while at that, he whispered of great, happy future to his friend. He told Ref how they were going to both move into another city, to become showmen and do tricks to people on large stages.

As his blue eyes slid shut, the last card fell on the ground next to the once happy man, who was now, nearly unrecognisable. Fergus ignored the cries of the child as he pulled Ref up, hugging the man to his chest while still whispering sweet nothings to himself.

The crying young man clutched his dead best friend to his chest, hiding his dirty face into his golden hair.

Someone else's hands touched Refster, trying to pull him away forcefully. Fergus wasn't having it, he showed them his crazed face, growling and snapping his teeth at them like a feral dog. The people pulled back, afraid of the man.

Again and again they tried to pull them apart.

There was no way Fergus was going to give his best friend to anyone. He needed to protect Ref, Ref was younger, Ref was innocent and good. Ref wasn't going to be given to people who could hurt him.

“Hey kid.”

Fergus ignored the voice, still rocking himself and Ref gently as he had his eyes closed and Refster pulled under his chin, arms around him protectively.

“Hey, open your eyes.” Fergus kept them closed, so tight that it almost hurt. Or maybe, he wanted it to hurt, because at that moment, he wasn't feeling anything but the maddening urge to protect Refster.

“What was his name?”

Is! Is his name, still is!” The dark haired teen growled angrily at the man's stupidity, pushing his face into Refs dust covered hair.

“Yes, still is. What's his name?”

Refster. His name is Ref, my best friend. My brother.”

“What's your name?”

“Ref, his name is Ref” Fergus mumbled, he was numb.

“Yes, that's a nice name. Hey, kid, will you open your eyes?” Fergus stopped rocking himself and the dead body of his best friend. He wasn't really awake, but it was like everything was underwater. He wasn't really understanding anything that was going on. He blinked his unnaturally green eyes open, not recognising the man sitting across him. The man had blue eyes and funny suit, but Fergus didn't even care about that. He just stared at the man, he was lost. Never in his life had he been as lost as in that moment.

“That's better, what's your name? I'm Steve.” The man's gentle voice tried to soothe Fergus, there was something so soft about that sentence it nearly made Fergus cry, but he was still somewhere deep, deep under water, and Ref was there with him.

“His name is Refster.”

The man sighed, inching closer.

“yes, that's his name, it's a nice name. But what's yours?” The man looked st Fergus, almost unable to stand the lost look in his eyes.
Fergus blinked many times before he actually saw the man sitting so close. He stared at him, trying to understand what he asked. “Fergus, I'm Fergus.” the man offered him a sad, encouraging smile.

“Fergus, look at me.”

And he did, he looked at Steve deep into the eyes. Sharing his confusion and panic with him, just throught one look. And Steve didn't turn his head away or look down. He had been there, where Fergus was. He knew what he was going through.

“That's good, just look at me and listen Fergus. You're alright here buddy. Gently, slowly remove your hands from Refster, will you do that for me?” he whispered to the teen, feeling the urge to cry. Steve was very sensitive man, but he had to be strong for the young boy who had lost his brother.

As if in daze, Fergus' wide eyes were locked on Steve. And he did as told, slowly, he removed his hands from around Ref, as the man slid on the ground from between his fingers, Fergus looked down.

The sight was horrendous. The only part untouched was his face, Refs legs were bend awkwardly and there were deep burn marks that were black and mixed with red flesh and blood. His hands, there were bones seen in some places and a large piece of metal was stuck in his belly, the tip of it was poking out from his side.

Calloused fingers curled under Fergus' chin, pushing his head up. His green eyes met with Steve's worried ones. “Hey, hey, don't look at it. Just look at me alright? Can you stand up? Come on, ill help you kid, yours doing just fine.” Steve pushed himself up and pulled Fergus' hand over his shoulder, pulling the teen up.

Whatever happened next was a blur to Fergus. He could feel people touching him, but only Steve's voice reached his ears.

Do a card trick Gus.
