The King
Suzy was pretty. That was the only thought that crossed Chanyeol's mind when his parents introduced her as his soon-to-be wife several months ago. Pretty. Nothing more. He had met her when they were kids several times, but they were never friends. Growing up, he had seen her a few times at some events before they were formally introduced again.
It was not surprising when his parents told him that he had been arranged to marry the girl of their choice. It was a given situation that he had long known. After his older brother had gotten married and with him having completed his conscription, he knew it was only a matter of time until he was told to marry too. However, he was surprised when he found out Suzy was the one he had to marry. She was well known amongst his family's social circle to be elusive. A lot of guys had tried to catch her heart but to no avail. What could have happened to make her agree with their arranged marriage?
At first, he thought that she might have been attracted to him. But when she told him on the day before their wedding that she wish to have no emotional connection or romantic relationship with him, he concluded that he misjudged her and she was indeed elusive as others had said.
Chanyeol actually had mutual view with her regarding relationships. Besides few-weeks-long relationships, he had never been in a long-term serious one. He could care less about marriage. His life had pretty much been party, study, party before he graduated university. Then, it became work, work, party, and work. Working hard and partying hard was his thing, but settling down and giving up on partying weren't hard to do either. Despite his lifestyle, Chanyeol was one who valued work and his parents. Besides, he knew tying the knot with the right girl could benefit the family's business too.
As he alighted his car, he saw Suzy's car coming to a stop in front of their house too. He checked his watch and frown a little seeing the time. It was a little too late for a lady to be coming home from work at this hour. But he soon smiled to himself knowing Suzy was a hard worker much like himself.
"Working overtime again?" He asked offering a smile when she was about to walk past him.
Suzy only briefly glanced at him before looking away again. He saw that little roll of her eyes before she entered the house first. He sighed and mentally scoffed at himself for even trying.
He thought marrying Suzy without having feelings for her wouldn't be hard. They just needed to continue their own lives while living under one roof for a long time. It really was not hard for the first two months of their marriage. That was until he met his high school friends in a reunion. With laughter, they brought up his past relationships. They laughed at how most of the times Chanyeol got himself into relationships because the girl kept on chasing him. He rarely dated because he felt something deep for the girl. It was usually because he saw how much the girl valued him to continue on chasing after him.
That was when Chanyeol realized that Suzy was the first girl he was in a relationship with who did not even bat an eye on him. On top of that, she was the only one to make him feel powerless. It was as if she were the only one he had no control over despite her being his wife.
He became curious about whether it was true that she really did not have the slightest feelings for him. He wondered how valuable he was to her or if he even had value in her life. He wondered when he would be able to have control over her. Slowly his curiosity turned into attraction. And he was not just attracted to her appearance this time, but also to her very being. He learned the harsh truth, though, that he was nothing more than a housemate to her.
Chanyeol felt a hand gripping on his shoulder. "Whoa! So this is your house?"
He turned to his side and found Lay staring at his house with mouth agape. He lightly chuckled seeing his friend's reaction.
Chanyeol was going to give up on trying to figure Suzy out until the kidnap attempt happened. It was when he received a phone call from the police station to inform him that Suzy was safe despite the attempt that he realized he was scared of losing her. She meant something to him even though he did not to her.
He had been receiving messages from an unknown number containing threats before the kidnap attempt happened. Though from an unknown number, he already had a guess on the person who was behind it all. He had not received any more threats ever since, but he could not stop worrying about Suzy. She needed protection, but he knew she would not want it coming directly from him. His solution was to have a bodyguard for her, and he needed one he could really trust. Thus, he chose Lay.
Besides being his best friend for a few years now, Lay was one of the best soldiers during their conscription years. And though he did not look like it, Lay mastered a few martial arts making him suitable for the job. Chanyeol knew he could trust him his wife.
Chanyeol decided to invite Lay in for a drink while Suzy had disappeared to their room upstairs.
"It's still weird seeing you having a wife, you know? You've finally found someone who could put a leash on you, huh?" Sitting at Chanyeol's very own bar counter, Lay chuckled after their reminiscence of their conscription days. "But don't try too hard, man." He patted the friend's shoulder.
Chanyeol knew what his friend was talking about and smiled dejectedly to himself. He must have looked like pitiable desperate guy earlier.
"Just saying you should take it slow." Lay shrugged sipping his glass of wine. "I don't think your wife likes to be controlled."
Chanyeol snorted. "You've only been with her for a day, and you could already conclude that?" He shook his head, amused.
Lay pursed his lips before clicking his tongue. "It's not that hard to see when you spend a day seeing her ordering people around and keeping everyone and everything in order. I mean, have you ever seen her work? I thought the day wouldn't end and I would spend the night there!"
Chanyeol laughed. That did sound like Suzy. But then a weird feeling of jealousy settled in when he realized he had never actually seen his wife work while Lay who had just met her today had.
"She's not that much of a control freak like you though," Lay teased and Chanyeol let out a sound of protest before laughing. He then gripped Chanyeol's shoulder again, staring at him with a soft smile. "So don't try to control her too much. I know you're worried, but take it easy. I think she already feels caged enough with you putting me as her bodyguard."
"It's for her own good," Chanyeol reasoned.
"Still." The friend shrugged.
Chanyeol softly scoffed lowering his head. Maybe Lay was right, he thought. Maybe he did come out as too controlling to Suzy. She had always been independent anyway.
After Lay left, Chanyeol went up the stairs loosening the tie around his neck. Feeling the tiredness slowly seeping in, he gently massaged his shoulder. When he entered their bedroom, Suzy was just coming out of the bathroom drying her hair with a towel. His eyes ran over her whose body was covered in her plain shirt and pajamas pants. In an instant, his tiredness vanished along with that little jealousy he had of Lay being able to watch her work.
No other guy could see her like this, he realized. This sight of her in her comfortable wear and without makeup covering her face was only reserved for him. That thought alone made him grin. Chanyeol pursed his lips and raised his eyes to her again just as Suzy noticed him standing by the door. They silently stared at each other for a moment before she broke their gazes and walked to the vanity table. She let the door to the bathroom opened as if silently telling him to take a shower. Sometimes he wished she would at least make small talks with him.
When he was done taking shower, he walked out of the bathroom and found Suzy sitting on the bed with her back on the headboard, still awake and busy with her phone. He walked to his side of the bed after throwing his towel into the laundry basket.
He pulled the cover a bit and slipped under it. "Still working?" He asked adjusting his pillow behind his back so he could sit comfortably.
She hummed shortly in response; eyes still focused on the phone's screen. For a long moment, Chanyeol just sat there silently watching her. Although he could not watch her work at the office, this was good enough for him. Watching her occasionally biting down the lip he had been secretly wishing to kiss and her brows coming together in concentration brought a smile to his face. What was more amusing to him was Suzy's lack of notice. That need to know his value to her and that want to control her was still there on the back of his mind. He wished he could just read her like a book, but Bae Suzy was a mystery.
After a while, she finally turned off her phone and set it down on the bedside table. She was adjusting her pillow when she belatedly noticed Chanyeol still staring at her. "What?" She raised a brow in annoyance.
Chanyeol wanted to tell her to rest well. He wanted to nag her for working too hard even at this hour, but he suddenly remembered what Lay said. With a small smile, he shook his head instead.
"Turn off the light if you're going to sleep," she told him as she lied down turning her back on him.
Satisfied he could at least hear her say a sentence, Chanyeol did just that before going back to the bed and lying down beside her. Not being able to sleep right away, he stared at her back watching the steady rise and fall of her shoulder. Never once did Chanyeol lay a hand on her body inappropriately. He even rarely touched her arm or held her hand.
Oh how much he wanted to put his arms around her right now! But he couldn't.
Someday, he thought. Someday he would be able to hug her to his heart's content. Someday she would see him as her husband. Someday he could have her completely. And he hoped that someday would come sooner.
