LIFE something that some take for granted at such an early age, is something more meaningful than anyone could have ever thought. But when we look deeper inside ourselves anyone can have the ability to see it more and more no matter if you're not gifted the abilities that others have. At first not everyone can understand the meaning, since it’s never so simple, not even the tiniest of babies, to the strongest of men. To the person from another planet, to a person who has been genetically experimented on.
When we continue to look down, it takes time for us to use our mind to see through the emotions that our lives throw at us to figure out that it’s just not that bad on the third planet; Earth. The place where we thrive on adaptation and beating the last generation, where we are always changing how we thrive in the world. Even when we fear death, it’s never the end. Death is just another step into another life, and yes it can be scary, but that is never the end. We claim it is, but once we truly open our eyes, when we truly see what is important over what is not we find things in the spaces that our society has created for us, that where our thoughts have overlapped our sense...no they overlap the memories and the love that happens in friendship and family.
But sometimes life is overshadowed by spaces caused by secrets. Including when it comes to the fourteen year old, light browned haired, Hannah Adam. A girl who has invested her life in her knowledge of science, ever since the death of her father. And since she was young, she has very little memories of who her mother was, as the mother she knew until she died from cancer just seemed different. But when she turned five she lost her father after he disappeared. And after her mother’s death, her older sister Margaret “Peggy” Adams took her in after graduate school.
And after moving to Metropolis, the two sisters lived in a two bedroom apartment, as her sister got a job as a reporter at the famous Daily Planet. Home to Lois Lane, one of the most known Reporters later on in her time. But everything seemed to go well for Hannah as she had friends who she could trust, and a life that she thought she would go on to in highschool when it came to cheerleading. But what she wouldn’t know was what would happen only two years later.
Two months ago...when Peggy walked into work, like some other days recently people were being laid off by Morgan Edge. But she would have never expected what would have happened that day, when she got called in the office, reminded her of the same pain she had the day she learned her father wasn’t anywhere to be found; that he wasn’t coming home again. The feeling that she lost. Hearing the few words she knew that what happened would change her, and her younger sister's life forever.
“Ms.Adam was sorry but we have to lay you off.” Faswell said as she shook her head knowing that this was due to Morgan Edge, and that he didn’t need anyone else to pay in his company. Making the good truthful reporters, the one who care about the people to be fired. She just shook her head and walked out of her office to her desk, knowing that she would never type on her computer keys again after going out in Metropolis reporting. Never hearing the sound of trouble brewing up, but Superman saving the day, but never seeing the faces she saw everyday she walked into work.
Packing up she saw a picture of her and her whole family together before her mothers death. She saw the smiles that came through the photo as she continued to place everything in the box as she took out a few files and notes that she wanted to keep. But she also took a few other things that were hidden as she heard the elevator ding, and she knew it was Lois and Clark, due to the click in Lois heels that the dirty blonde haired woman was used to.
“Peggy what’s━” Lois voice sounded soft as she knew what was happening to one of her young friends an co-worker.
“Faswell fired me Lois.” She said with a bit of remark still in her voice, with the hate that underlined how the world has been going for the twenty eight year old. People have been recently fired, but out of all people Lois didn’t expect a friend and young journalist brought to life what it meant in her own way. “Ugh as much as I would love to talk badly about him I better leave before he sends security to escort me. But don’t give up Lois, out of all of us you need to continue writing your stories.”
“I wish you well Peggy. Call me if you need any help.” Lois said to her as she smiled back walking down the hall with her box as she nodded at Clark before the close of the elevator door.
Once heading home for Peggy was interested as she sat her box down knowing that her sister was in her room somewhere, since summer just started a week ago. Hearing her footsteps coming down the stairs made her heart break knowing that Hannah would have questions for her, knowing that she had to explain everything to her younger sister. But at the same time she was worried about finding a job, due to Metropolis and it always needing newer and better people, as she was nearing thirty...two years from thirty.
“Peggy I thought you weren’t supposed━” Hannah started as she saw the box on the white sleek countertop of the kitchen as she could see it in her sisters eyes. “You were fired weren’t you?” She asked her knowing that it was true.
“Yes, Anna, I was because they can’t stand quality reporting and if you’re not rich then you’re not the best for the situation at Daily Planet.” She told her sister as she watched the girl sit down beside her on the other bar stool as money would start to get tight unless she found a job. “What are we going to do? You can’t get a job, and you have highschool in a few months. And I am the one providing an income.”
“You need to stop worrying then Peggy, because you always find a way to get yourself out of tough situations━” The girl started,
“But not this one. This one I have never had to face, it’s different than when mom died. I was able to use my degree and get a job at the Daily Planet now less than seven years later.” She continued on as Hannah went to go get something as she continued without noticing until her sister came up with her computer.
“There are over a million or more jobs out there. And yes, you might need experience but Peggy out of anyone I know you can do anything you can put your passion into.” Hannah told her as she nodded with a few strands of hair falling off her face. Pulling something up on her PC computer she was able to slide it over to her sister. “You just need to look on here for a start, maybe you’ll find something. Even if it means we have to move.”
“You wouldn’t mind leaving Metropolis, just so I could have a job?” Peggy asked her as the light browned hair Hannah nodded as her sister looked through some of the jobs seeing that she wasn’t qualified for some. As she even looked at the small town named Smallville...which fit for its name. Since it was a farming town that seemed to have many farms up for sale due to bankruptcy rates. But it also seemed to guarantee more jobs would be coming soon.
But the last time that she lived in a small town was a few years before her dad was deployed and she herself was five years old. Not knowing if he would come back, not having to worry more than that thought at that time. But she saw some offers at a local bank, a need for a lieutenant firefighter, and then a head journalist at one of their local newspapers.
She looked through the qualifications of the journalist starting to piece together a thought process of what her income would be even in a small town. As she was looking her sister walked away to another room as she was meanwhile looking at a small three bedroom house on a couple acres, but no big farming, but still had the more Country charm to it. She continued looking into it knowing that her sister was right in the end, and she knew what she had to do next.
About a week later the apartment was almost finished as most of the boxes were packed and the two sisters were in the living room that Hannah grew up in as she looked around as the kitchen was blank for the most part, that the photos that were by the staircase are gone. That she had to pack her cheer and gym accomplishments. But deep down she was happy at the same time, yes, she was leaving her friends and her life in Metropolis with Peggy, but at the same time she is starting a new life somewhere else. Somewhere where she can do something more than she could being surrounded by the city lights.
As they were packing she saw some of the old books that belonged to her father; yes it’s weird to have them in a living space; she thought but it wasn’t weird when it made you remember them. To remember their features and the stories since he disappeared to have something more...is more than nothing. Including when you need that something to keep you moving to the other side than the good.
Once everything was packed, the movers came as Peggy had to find everything that the apartment wanted her to put out; paperwork and apartment information wise. So then the next owner or renter could know the information on the apartment and all who has been here, and how long they were here. When Hannah walked out she hugged one of her oldest friends as her friend wasn’t trying to cry as the two embraced. Until Peggy honked the horn at the girl telling her it was time to leave.
“Call me everyday when you get the time Hannah. Don’t let the small town get to your mind.” Her friend told her as it made her laugh bringing the sadness that came to her heart at that moment.
“And don’t let the big city get to your spirit.” She told her friend as she shook her head. As they let go of each other and headed two different ways, as she headed to Peggy’s car, while her friend headed back to her older brother who waved at her before they started off before the moving truck.
Looking down the road I stuck my head out looking around as the scenery changed. It went from the big city to more of a urban area, and then finally we started seeing the country side of West Kansas which looked very different than in Metropolis, Delaware. And after two days of the girls being in the car they finally pulled up to this old looking country style house. Which had a white painted porch and the white on the whole house. It looked like it had stripes due to the lines on the house, making it look like a farm. There were some natural light wood features to this house underneath the roof and around some of the tops of the windows.
When getting out Hannah looked up as she could feel the slight breeze that was in the air. The breeze that made the grass moved as she looked back at her sister. Smiling she got up on the porch as the moving truck was already there and left. As she looked around in the house it had a small kitchen but was slightly bigger than the one in the apartment that her and her sister had in Metropolis. As it was still full with boxes but she could walk around. Some of the furniture was unwrapped and set up like the couches, table, chairs, barstools. But then she started going up the stairs to see her bed set up other than the decorations. But it was finally a room that didn’t have someone who was next to a loud neighbor.
Standing there she could hear her sister downstairs starting to unpack some of the boxes as she walked down to see her sister in the kicthen unpacking some of the dishes like the bowls, plates, and glasses. When she saw her sister look up at her she smiled at her going to help her with a hand as they started unpacking. They could sleep, but with how both of the girls are include her, they will rather get it done now than later.
A couple hours later the two of them are finished with the downstairs as they both feel asleep on the couch, one being on oneside and the other being on the other side. Both sharing a blanket; due to the two of them not doing the upstairs yet. That was left for tomorrow morning before going to the store to buy some food. And within the next two weeks her sister would start her job at the local newspaper.
After unpacking throughout the morning the two girls headed into the small town of Smallville as they walked around looking up at the banner that was talking about the start of summer. As they were walking around Hannah barley saw anything bad happening until her sister ran into someone as their papers dropped. When she looked back it was an older woman, who was about to bend down as her and her sister and her picked up all the finacial papers that she had in her hands. They helped her.
“I have never seen you before.” The woman said as the two of them shaked there hands as she looked at the two sisters seeing that they had some similarites. But the one girl seemed fimilar. “You were at my son and daughter in laws wedding.” She stated as Hannah was wondering how the two knew each other.
“Martha Kent. I’m sorry for the whole papers, but it’s good to see you. I forgot you lived in Smallville, but it’s good to see you.” Peggy told the older woman as she smiled and looked at Hannah who was looking at her sister and this Martha Kent. “Oh Martha this is my younger sister Hannah.” She told her as the woman shook her hand.
“It’s good to see you. If you need any help just ask me.” Martha told them as the two girls smiled as they finally all walked in two different ways as the girls continued their way to the market. Finally getting food.
About a week later when she was eating lunch with her sister, after Hannah was done she was walking along some of the rocky areas of Smallville until she bumped into someone who looked her age. She quickly helped her up as the girl looked like she could tell that Hannah was from a big city due to her style.
“I’m sorry, my sister and I just keep running into people.” Hannah said making the girl smile at her as the two smiled at each other. “I’m Hannah Adam.” She told the girl feeling like she could trust her deep down.
“I’m Sarah Cushing. You must be new to town.” Sarah told her as the two smiled. “I come here often just to get my mind off of things, and to get away from my dad when he is at work.” She told her as she motioned for her to follow her. As the two started walking together.
“So where are you from?” Sarah asked her as she shook her head and laughed.
“Metropolis. My sister was fired from her job recently and she found one here, and wanted us to get a new start.” Hannah told her as she smiled.
“I have met a set of brothers and a family that my family knows from Metropolis. Where did she work?” She asked the girl as Hannah smiled.
“The Daily Planet, she was a journalist.” She told her as Sarah and her continued to talk about who they were and spent the day together as it was a start of a friendship that would last for awhile; which they didn’t know at the moment.
Two months later sitting on the rocks Hannah was listening to other teens that she had meet due to Sarah as she laughed at one of the jokes until she heard Sarah’s name be called out by a boy as she got up with Sarah as her friend asked her.
“I still don’t understand how you guys didn’t get hurt.” Sarah said as it made her wonder what had happened to him that made this boy her age not to get hurt. But then it clicked, he must have been the one that Sarah talked about that got hit by a pile of metal pipes that fell on him and his brother who she didn’t see yet.
“Still figuring that one out.” The boy said as she was wondering what his name was, because Sarah didn’t tell her a thing about who this was.
“Well I’m just glad that you made it. Oh, and this is Hannah, a friend of mine who moved from Metropolis two months ago with her older sister. Hannah this is Jordan Kent.” Sarah told them as Hannah could see that he gave her a shy wave and she waved back as they continued walking up. But the last name did feel fimilar to her, like she heard it before. Most likely from her sister.
Once they started heading closer fireworks started going off as there was a campfire already lit up as she could feel the warmth that the area had smiling. It gave her a different feeling that all those times back in Metropolis. Everyone that was around made her smile knowing some of them. But she still wondered more about this Jordan Kent.
The sun finally went down as the fireworks continued and she was talking in a group full of a couple people that she met over the summer. As she just started highschool a couple days ago, smiling she was wondering still what the boy had to do in her mind. But her more curious side ran to when she thought about the brother of the boy she met.
But not before long does the girl bump into a boy who seemed to talk to some others that she had known from meeting. She looked at him, but he looked different a new type of different. From his light brown hair, to his ocean blue eyes. As she studied the boy, that must be around her age for a moment until he apoligized.
“The fault is all mine, I wasn’t watching where I was going.” She told him as he let go of her arms and she smiled and quickly asked. “Your not from around here. I’m guessing your brother is Jordan Kent?” She asked him as she could see his eyes questioning hers.
“How’d you know.” He asked her still wondering how she knew, as the two didn’t know each other. As she smiled.
“I’m Sarah Cushing’s friend. And also she introduced me to him, and besides you stand out by the way you act around here, and beside I have seen how Metropolis guys walk.” She spoke as he looked at her. “I moved here from Metropolis two months back after my older sister got fired from her job.”
“You’re from Metropolis?” He asked as he looked at the features of the young woman in front of him thinking back to his ex-crush that he had before she got a boyfriend.
“Yeah nobody expects that at first. I’m Hannah Adam by the way.” She spoke out to him as he shook her hand.
“Jonathan Kent.” He said as she nodded figuring that since the two of the brother seemed to be close in age which might mean that they’re twins or just less than a year different from each other. But she figured faternal twins more.
But before they could talk anymore Jordan Kent kissing her best friend caught her eye as she knew that, that wouldn’t end well due to her having a boyfriend who won’t like that one bit. As she could see him starting to approch him as Her and Jonathan both headed to go help him.
Before she knew it Jonathan Kent started pushing him as he was anger and tackled him until him and his brother started to get beat up and she wasn’t liking how people were starting to film it, as her and Sarah tried to stop this from happening. As she could see the same reaction plastered on Sarah’s face. It was sadness, mixed with guilt for the two boys as Hannah started pushing them too.
She could see something happening to Jordan as deep down she could feel something within her like something awakened at that one moment. Like something that has been asleep for so long and has finally awaken when she saw a blast of heat vision from Jonathan’s eyes as something within her sparked since nobody could see, as it was energy that she could feel. It was like she was dreaming, that was what Hannah thought when she saw it happen until she got blasted back and everything went black.
But not long after did she finally open her eyes as Sarah woke her up as she saw her friend was alright but she had no damage done to her even though she thought something was. Hannah thought that it was all just a dream, and nothing else. A dream that so bad, but was real now that she could see that. Not long after did the fire engines arrive to help all the other teenagers from the party as she could see Jonathan standing there as she was covered by some of the ash by the fire.
Looking at him she went up to him as the two didn’t speak until she had to leave wishing him luck, and not before long did she finally see her sister which made her more than angry not at herself but at her sister. At the lies that she could feel deep down.
Once her sister and her arrived back to their house she looked over at her with anger in her eyes. “Why wasn’t I hurt. I was near the blast, and all I was covered in was ash. I had no brushing, no burns, and most of all something came out of my hands.” She told her sister as she could see Peggy’s reaction changing.
“I don’t know━” Peggy said as her sister knew that she was lying deep down. Due to the fact that the look on her sister’s face told her everything that she needed to know. Including when she continued to look like she was thinking of things.
As she got out of the car she slammed the door and as she got angry her sister got out behind her. “Don’t lie to me Peggy. You have lied to me, so stop it and tell me the truth.” She demanded as her sister has never seen her like this angry and shocked, at the same time as hurt.
“Ok yes I lied to you. First off, just know I lied to protect you, never to harm you. But I never understood until I grew up.” Peggy told her as she was getting impaitent as her sister looked at her. “You’re my half sister, when you were born it was after my step-father died. And dad returned home, my mother saw him with you in his arms and I didn’t know then I was sixteen. I had a sister, I thought that deep down you were my sister and that’s all that mattered. But dad told me when I was younger who your mother was, she wasn’t from here, he told me that your mother came from another planet called Almerac, it died like Kyrption; the classic superman story.” Peggy said as she could see her sister still worried, and sad seeing that her sister was hurt as Hannah looked at her shaking her head not believing it until she continued to see her sisters face until she saw her and knew it was true.
“Dad also had abilities and was a hero, and yes he disappeared again. And deep down I knew you had her abilities. I was jealous too for so long that I wasn’t like dad, or heck had a parent from another planet. But when I grew up before mom died I realised that you were my sister.” Peggy continued as she shook her head mad at her sister as she said something Peggy continued. “I’m so sorry but you got to understand━”
“No! I don’t understand. I never thought I had to suspect something from someone who I thought was my whole flesh and blood. But to learn everything was lies. I’m so done with you right now.” She said as Peggy interrupted her.
“Anna, please.” Peggy said with her voice low.
“No, leave me alone Margaret.” She yelled before going back in the house. Hearing her sister yell behind her knowing that she couldn’t stop.
Running back up to her room, Hannah, still with anger radiating off of her, she was filled with lies and sorrow due to those lies. After so many years of knowing who she was, she felt within herself that she didn’t know anything about herself. Heck, she’s a half-human; that is meta, and a half-alien; that is Almerac. And that even though that is some big news, that isn’t the thing bothering her the most. That isn’t the thing that is making her mad 100%. It’s just that she was lied to, and that her sister tried her best to not get the secret out to her. Like she knew that she had powers, but just didn’t want her sister to have to deal with them. Until now where deep down even within herself, it’s scaring her for once in her life. She is scared of something that is over her.
Grabbing her phone she puts on her headphones and looks out the window in her room, when a song comes on. She closes her eyes, listening to the lyrics. “I had a dream I was seven. Climbing my way in a tree. I saw a piece of heaven. Waiting, impatient, for me,” She could just see the memories through her eyelids, but didn’t notice how Peggy was standing there, due to her focusing on the lyrics more than what was going anywhere else. “I felt alive and I can’t complain. But now take me home. Take me home where I belong. I can’t take it anymore.”
She took a few breaths, before her sister decided that it was best to leave her alone, at least until the morning where she would come down for breakfast. Or that was all the older half-sister could think. That was all she would want to believe.
