Chapter One
"Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in another world, be a different person, and be well, perfect?" I asked Oscar.
"What do you mean?" He replied. Oscar looked at me and gave me a concerned look, his deep brown eyes filled with concern. His black hair glinted in the moonlight.
I sighed and remained silent. I looked back up into the stars. "He's the only person you really talk to. Well the only person other than me.Tell him everything." Zoe's voice rang in my ears. After a few moments I finally replied, "If there actually are other things out there, that we don't know about. Then we could actually you know..." I trailed off and couldn't bring myself to continue.
Oscar remained silent for what seemed like an eternity. I heard the grass rustle and sat up. His eyes seemed to bore into mine. "Kassie Evelyn Ashford, why would you want to be anyone but yourself?"
"Because we're the misfits, the ones nobody wants, the unwanted ones because we know things we shouldn't," I whispered. I turned my head to the side. I couldn't bring myself to look at him.
"Kass, you know the only reason why they don't accept us is because we're some of the only gifted. We were selected when we were young because they saw potential in us," He began.
"Oscar Bradley Cartwright, I know. You give me this speech every single time I ask you! Why can't you just answer my question? You beat around the bush constantly!"
"I should have known yo-"
"Should have know what? That I'm right?"
I stood up and heard an exasperated sigh. I looked at the city in the distance. The lights reflecting off the lake danced with the waves. Oscar stood beside me after a few minutes. Assuming it was safe. I turned and looked at him. "Have you ever thought of it?" I asked gently.
He nodded grimly, "I have. Though I know I shouldn't."
I nodded. His shaggy black hair was starting to fall into his eyes. I reached up and pushed it out of his eyes. He smirked.
"Race you to the boards!" I yelled and started to run toward the boards at the edge of the water. I reached my board just as Oscar blew past me and I jumped on. I snapped my fingers and it rose into the air and sped across the top of the water. Oscar picked up speed behind me and pulled out in front of me. He let the back of his board slap the surface of the water. The spray came towards me and I laughed as I dove out of the way. I leaned forward and picked up speed. I hugged a tight corner and sent up a wall of water as I circled around him.
"KASS!"
I laughed and banked to the right. If we do become one of the few selected next week, I'll at least get to have the time of my life with my two best friends this week.
