E04: Where Do We Start Looking?
LALISA
🍂
"We can't rule out the possibility that Tzuyu was actually killed that night. That someone might've pushed her off the bridge," Sheriff Choi said to Tzuyu's father who looked fazed by the sudden revelation that the cause of his daughter death was actually murder. "The text messages on her phone showed that she's been texting a certain person to meet up with her on the Border bridge. And at around ten in the evening, her phone had records of phone calls from the same number. If we could just trace that person, he might have an idea to what happened to your daughter, Mr. Chou."
I was right. Tzuyu wouldn't kill herself. She's not that type of person. But who? Who the hell would kill someone as innocent and kind as her?
"Right now, we've hypothesized that when she met up with that certain person, they might've fallen into an argument which lead the suspected person to push Tzuyu off the bridge," he continued.
My forehead creased.
"Uncle Top," I said as we entered the room. He looked up at us as well as Mr. and Mrs. Chou. "What's going on?"
Caught a little off guard, Sheriff Choi turned towards me and sighed. "Lis, it's better if you let us finish here first before we give you guys the final verdict."
"But uncle—"
"Please, Lis. Be patient. We'll get through this, I promise," he said then turned towards Yoongi. "You guys can wait in my office for the time being. Just don't touch anything important."
"Yes dad."
Yoongi and the rest of us had no choice but to obey the sheriff's orders. But I've heard enough to make me start making my own hypothesis.
Tzuyu was about to meet someone at the Border bridge. But who? Who was she supposed to meet before she came to the party?
"Come to think of it..." Jimin suddenly started. All eyes were on him now. "Didn't Tzuyu say she had a prior engagement? When you asked her about the party? She said she'd come but wouldn't be able to stay long."
"Did she come to your party?" Jungkook then asked making me shake my head no. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah," I confirmed. "I actually waited for her that night. But she never came."
"The Border bridge... why of all places?" Taehyung was rubbing his chin with his index finger. "It's pretty far from the woods and a good one-hour ride from the Northside. Why bother going there?"
"Not unless you're running away..." Yoongi suggested. "In her diary, Lis, didn't she mention something about ending it? What if by saying she wants to end it, it meant she wanted to go away? Leave town or something?"
"But wouldn't she need a car to do that?" Jimin asked. "The next town's like a mile away from there."
"Maybe that's why she met up with someone?" Jungkook turned towards me. "I dunno guys. I think this is starting to get really complicated."
I didn't respond. I kept recalling what I've read in her diary.
"Should I just end everything? It would hurt less if it stops, right?"
It doesn't add up. End everything? Stop? It doesn't sound like she wanted to leave. It's more like she wants to end something. Stop something. But what? Not her own life, apparently.
"Jimin," I said making him turn to me. "Can I borrow Betsy?"
"Huh? What for?"
"I need to go somewhere very quick."
🍂
"I don't think I'm allowed to give out patient information to just anyone, Miss Kwon," the lady behind the reception desk said eyeing her from head to toe.
"We just want to know what the cause of her death is," I pleaded. "Did she really drown then died? Please help us out here!"
"I can't tell you that not unless you're a family member or you have a court order!" The lady hissed back. "Look here, young lady. You're in no place to raise your voice at me. So you and your southside manners should leave this place before I call the guards."
"Ugh."
I dashed out of the building and made my way towards Jimin's car. I need to get those files.
Just as I was about to get in the car, a truck entered the hospital compound. Boxes of what seems to be medical supplies were stacked by the back door as a guy checked them one by one.
Hmm...
I took my jacket off and tied my hair in a bun. Good thing I'm wearing a crop top and tight jeans—not some sweatpants thank God.
Taking a deep breath, I went in. I'm not actually good at flirting but desperate times call for desperate measures.
"Hey you! You're not allowed here!" The guy checking parcels said. I channeled the actress deep inside me.
"Omo! I'm sorry sir. I didn't know this place was off limits," I feigned innocence then flirtatiously bit my lower lip.
"Uh... you... you can't be here, miss," the guy who looks like he works for the hospital said—clearly affected by my charm. "Uh... the uh..."
I grabbed that opportunity to walk closer to him. Touching his arm gently, I sighed.
"It's really hard to find your way in a foreign place..." The gulped as I trailed my hand up to his shoulder while the other on his arm. "Can you pretty please show me where the restroom is? I'm... lost."
"I uh... um... s-sure."
"Really?" I smiled widely when he suddenly let the delivery man take the boxes in. "Thank you very much! How can I ever repay you?"
"It's uh... nothing. Um... shall we?" I nodded and followed him inside while clinging on his arm. "Um... this... is the public toilet—"
"Don't you have any private restrooms we can use?" I said while trailing my fingers on his arm. Again, he gulped.
"Uh... the uh... the staff restroom might be unoccupied—"
"Great!" I pulled him towards a boldly labeled "staff room" on the other side of the hall. "Can you... check if there's anyone in there?"
"S-Sure."
Just as he was about to go in, I grabbed the hardest thing I could find—which was a hardbound book, and hit the guy with all my might. He fell unconscious on the ground.
After checking whether he's still breathing, I carried him to a room—a bedroom to be exact and laid him there.
"I knew I'd find you here."
My eyes grew wide.
"Jungkook! What the hell are you doing here?!" I blurted out.
"I followed you 'coz I think you're about to do something illegal," he said shrugging. "And I was right."
When someone suddenly walked by, Jungkook pushed me back into the room.
"Seriously, Lisa. You're gonna get yourself in big trouble here."
"Yeah, I know," I answered. "I appreciate the concern but it's my life to ruin, not yours. So please just let me go before we both get caught."
"Why are you so into this? I mean, I get that you want justice to be served but shouldn't we leave this to the authorities?"
"That's why I'm helping! Look, Kookie. I know you're not the rule breaking type of guy so it's best if you just leave me the fuck alone. I got this and I—"
Jungkook suddenly placed his hand on my mouth and we hid behind the door as it opened.
"I swear I heard someone in here, Woohyun."
"It's Sunggyu," the other guy said. "Look, he's sleeping again. Maybe he's just sleep talking."
"I swear I heard a woman's voice—"
"Dongwoo, maybe you're just hallucinating. Didn't you say you haven't slept for days?Let's just go before the chief sees us lounging around."
As the steps grew fainter, Jungkook released me.
"What do you want to accomplish here, Lisa? Are you gonna steal Tzuyu's records?" He folded his arms. "That's illegal, you know. You can be thrown into juvenile jail."
"Yes," I answered back. "They only said she killed herself by jumping over the bridge and drowning. That was believable when it was suicide but now that it's a murder case... it doesn't add up."
Something in my gut won't stop bugging me. And it always meant there's something wrong. Or something's gonna happen. Eitherway, I'm sure there's more to this case than what it seems.
"Tzuyu's one of the best swimmers I know. And here dying because someone pushed her over the bridge? That's so unlikely. She would've been perfectly fine. She would've swam to the shore by herself."
"So you want to get her records for?"
"Don't you get it? This hospital is hiding something from the investigation. Wouldn't the autopsy reports reflect any signs of distress or force? Why didn't they say any of those to the Sheriff? Not unless someone paid to hide those information to rule out the possibility of murder. Too bad her phone was found."
"Wow, you are smart," he said staring straight at me. "Okay. I'm in. I'll help you break in to get those records."
"I wasn't asking for your help, to be honest."
"But I'm helping anyways," he stubbornly said. "Someone's gotta keep you away from trouble you know."
I rolled my eyes at him. "Whatever. But I'm responsible if ever you get into trouble."
"Oh, that wouldn't be any problem," he said cockily. "Who in the right mind would cross the Mayor's son?"
🍂
"So... where do we start looking?"
It wasn't easy getting in the records section of the hospital. But because we happen to find a nurse's uniform—for both Jungkook and me, it was easy especially with a mask on. And it's like the heavens were on our side 'coz the ones assigned to the section were out on a lunch break.
"I feel like I'm James Bond or something," Jungkook whispered as he rummaged through shelf after shelf. "All I need are spy gadgets—"
"Bingo."
I fished out the file named Chou Tzuyu and called Jungkook who immediately turned.
"Let's go. Before those nurses come back."
"You can't just take that file out. We have to photocopy it so that no one suspects—"
"We don't have much time to do that."
"What if we just take pictures?" He suggested. "We'll get into trouble if the file goes missing. Especially you since you practically begged the front desk for the file."
"Fine. But take pictures too. So we'd get it done as soon as possible."
He nodded and proceeded to take one shot at a time. I just took a video just in case we miss something.
Just as we were about to leave, we heard company. Our eyes grew wide and we scrambled into putting the file back to its place.
And the next thing I know, Jungkook and I were on top of each other making out to our heart's content.
🍂
"Well that was close."
"If you speak about what just happened to anyone, and I mean any living creature, I will skin you alive."
"O-Okay."
My grip tightened on the car wheel. We're on our way back to the Southside and Jungkook wanted to come.
We made out just so we didn't get caught. And like what anyone who suddenly walks into two people eating their faces out, the person who almost caught us left without a word thinking we're just two regular employees enjoying a deserted room and each other.
But it would be a fucking lie if I said what happened after wasn't awkward. It fucking was.
Neither one of us spoke and it was almost a blur on how we managed to get our clothes back and walk out of the place unharmed.
"But... I'll be honest," he started. "Where did you learn how to kiss like that?"
"Just..."
To be honest, I never had any boyfriends. Just boy space friends. I'm not the type who's really into boys. Not that I'm playing for the other team or anything but... I'm just not that interested. Or so I thought.
"And you have the softest lips—"
"Can we not talk about it? I'm concentrating on driving here."
Then he grinned—widely.
"I knew it," he said making me look at him. "That was your first, wasn't it?"
"Seriously, Kim. You're getting on my nerves."
He laughed making me glare at him. He raised both his arms in surrender making me heave a sigh.
"I'd say I'm sorry but I honestly enjoyed it," he said pissing me off more. "You're good for someone who doesn't have any exper—"
"One more word and I'll rip those lips off your goddamned face."
Silence.
"Good."
The remaining journey home was quite silent. Jungkook would mumble a bit but I programmed my head to ignore any noise coming from his side.
"Betsy my baby you're back!" Jimin rejoiced just as I parked in front of Taehyung's place. "Did the mean lady scratch you—Jungkook? Why are you—"
"Enough chitchat. We need to discuss something."
I walked pass the four guys making Taehyung wonder.
"What happened?"
"We broke in the hospital to get Tzuyu's Records."
"Did you guys get caught?"
"Nope."
"Then why's Lisa so red?"
"Because we ki—"
I ran back to him as fast as I could and covered his fucking mouth.
"Kicked ass! We got into trouble with some uh... ghoulies. Yeah. Them."
"Those bastards," Jimin hissed. "I swear when I bumped into one of them I'll slit their throats off—"
"So this is where you hang out these past few days."
All five of us turned towards the sudden intruder. A petite jet black hair girl stood with her arms folded over her chest. To say she looked like a fucking goddess was an understatement.
"Noona!"
