6| Agent Conner

I leaned against Finlay's room as I waited for Conner and Dr. Robert to finish their chat.

The nurse came out of Finlay's room; she was the same one that burst me. I gave her a sheepish smile, and she glared at me in return, then left. I scratched my head in shame.

Awkward.

I stood straight when I saw Conner and Dr. Robert shaking hands and coming toward us. Conner gave me a lopsided grin, then went to the two guys, who were still wearing glasses and whispered something to them.

"You know him?" I turned my head towards Paige. "The Agent?" She referred to Conner.

"We have met a few times before." I shrugged.

"Then ask him what's going on." She gave me a look, and I understood her point.

She wants me to make Conner spill his tea.

And I can do that.

"Hi, Amber. Long time no see." Conner greeted with his charming smile, showing off his dimples.

The sight of them reminded me of Finlay's smile, but I shook my head to clear the image.

"Good luck," Paige muttered behind me and went to Dr. Robert.

"Hello, Agent Conner. It's nice to see you again." I plastered a smile on my face.

"Nice to see me?" He raised his brows in amusement. "Really?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I?" I batted my eyelashes at him. He opened his mouth, but I cut him off. "What are you doing here anyway? Shouldn't you be out there solving federal cases?"

"Shouldn't you be out there writing stories?" He retorted.

"I am here doing my job," I answered, adjusting my collar. Paige coughed behind me. "As her assistant," I added.

"You and your leader need to get going now." He smirked.

"Why?" I asked, folding my arms.

"You'll know about it sooner." He turned around, but I put my hand on his arm, stopping him.

"What's with those guys?" I gestured curiously toward the two guys standing outside Finlay's room.

"They're bodyguards." He said in a duh tone.

"You're an agent and you need bodyguards? Can't you take care of yourself?" I mocked.

"I didn't say they were for me." My brows knitted in confusion as I glanced at the guards.

"They are here for Finlay," I said, joining the dots. "But why does a half-dead guy need bodyguards?"

"To protect his half-alive body." I opened my mouth to ask more questions that were spinning in my head but was stopped by Conner. "It's time to escort you and your friend out."

"We're here to do our job and you can't stop us." Paige intervened.

"Actually, I can." He took an envelope out of his jacket and gave it to her. "This case is now confidential, and no media is allowed to present it until further notice." My brows snapped together in confusion.

Confidential?

Maybe I'm right about Miss Blondie getting kidnapped.

He gestured towards the elevator. Paige sighed, and we walked together to the elevator, with Conner trailing behind.

"You've got to try harder to get things out of him," Paige muttered.

"He isn't an easy guy," I whispered back. As the elevator door closed, I turned my head towards Conner. "Finlay wasn't the only one in the car," I said and raised my brows at him.

"What's that supposed to mean?" He asked confused.

Why is he confused?

"I am asking you."

"Of course he was." He looked at me weirdly. "Haven't you seen the news?"

Wait...

"Are you sure about that?" I asked again. "Wasn't there any trace of... A girl in his car?"

"No." His face scrunched. "Why are you even asking that?"

There wasn't any girl in the car...

His girlfriend was not with him...

She isn't kidnapped... where the hell is she then?

I glanced at Conner, who raised his brows, waiting for my answer. Instead, I asked another question. "What if there was a girl with him?"

"We have searched the car and the crime scene, and there wasn't any sign of a girl or any other person being there with him."

"What if someone kidnapped her?"

"There isn't any missing complaint and nor someone getting kidnap- Why are you so hell bend on a girl?"

I licked my dry lips, thinking of an excuse. I couldn't tell him I saw him last night with a girl because I didn't want to get involved with the FBI. Who knows what was cooking in Reed's case?

"I was just wondering... I mean, he's a hot guy, so I thought he might be with some girl..." I gave him a sheepish smile.

"Oh, my god." Paige groaned behind me. As soon as the elevator door opened, she rushed outside.

"You realize that you're talking about a guy who is in a coma-"

"I know, I was just curious," I mumbled, getting out of the elevator. "Why is the FBI getting involved in a case of a commoner?"

"You don't have to worry about that, Katz."

He will not give in that easily. I have to try something else.

"Are you free tonight?" I stepped closer to him and placed my hand over his shoulder. I ran my finger down his biceps. "We can go on that date you were asking for," I said in a husky voice.

He raised his brows at me. "The date I asked you about... Four months ago."

"It's been four months." I let out a nervous chuckle. "Oh! How time passes." I stopped and glanced at him seriously. "I rain-checked it."

"For four months?" He gave me an amused look. "I know what you're trying to do, Katz, and you will not get it that easily." Leaning, he whispered in my ear. "How about I rain check it till this case is over, and then I'll give you whatever you want."

My jaw clenched. "Why don't you shove the date in your as-"

"Amber!" Paige yelled, cutting me off.

"You should go now." Conner winked at me before going backward. "I'll see you around, Katz."

F**k him!

"You're seriously not good at this," Paige muttered, walking towards the parking lot.

"I'm good at seducing he's just... Argh!" I stomped my foot in frustration.

"Right." She stopped in front of her car.

"What are we going to do now?" I asked, shielding my eyes from the burning sun to look at her.

"I'm going to talk to Mr. Hudson about it. Why don't you go home?"

My eyes grew enormous in surprise. "And take the day off?"

"Sure." She shrugged, giving me a once-over. "You look like you need some... Rest."

I grinned ear to ear and bobbed. "I'm active. It's just that I didn't get sleep last night, and I have eaten nothing since morning-"

"Spare me your explanations, Katz. I need to get going."

"Oh, sure... I'll see you later!" I said, running towards my car.

Entering my apartment, I went straight to my room and plopped on my bed. As soon as my aching back hit the soft mattress, a sigh of pleasure left my lips. I closed my eyes and relaxed.

Who thought a hospital visit will be this exhausting?

My stomach-growling sound echoed in my empty apartment and an amused, familiar chuckle came to my ears.

"Why are you laughing?" I grunted.

"You need to feed something to that lion." He teased.

"I'm too tired to get up. Can you get me something?" I mumbled, closing my heavy lids and almost falling asleep.

"I would love to, but I can't." I was about to ask him why when my brain clicked.

Wait for a second...

I live alone in my apartment...

I jolted up from my bed and turned my head from where the voice came from. My eyes widened when I saw Finlay standing at my room's doorframe.

"What the f**k?!"
