49| Wild Night
“Where are you, Kayla? I’ve been ready for an hour!”
“Don’t lie.” She huffed. “And I’m not the one to be blamed for the traffic.”
It was Friday night and Kayla and I decided to go for a girls’ night out. It’s been a week since I met Neil and Finlay in Pennsylvania. Things have gotten no better, but I think I got my closure. Finlay will never remember me. What was the use of hanging on to him?
I will always cherish the moments between him and me and they will forever have a place in my cracked heart, but I need to live the life I always dreamed of.
So here I was, moving on with the memories of him.
I was still in search of a story, but I was also happy with whatever I had until now. I worked so hard for it and will continue to do it until I reach my goals.
“You should have left early,” I plopped on my couch.
I was wearing a backless nude silk dress with the same heels and a black choker around my neck. I wore dark red lipstick with smoky eyes and kept my hair open in waves.
Time for a wild night.
“How early do you want me to leave for a nightclub?” Kayla snorted.
“Why do we have to go to Soul Groove again?” I grumbled.
“Because Michael is there.” She said in a duh tone.
Things between Kayla and Michael have been going pretty well. So good that she only wants to visit that one club I want to stay away from. But I was happy for my friend.
“Ask Michael to get a job somewhere else,” I grumbled.
“Once I get married, I will.” She cursed when someone horned behind her. “I’ll call you when I reach your apartment.”
“Ok...” I mumbled and cut the call.
There was a deafening silence that echoed through my apartment. Since Finlay, it hasn’t felt the same living here. Every corner of my apartment reminded me of him. I exhale a long breath and dropped my head on the couch.
“I seriously need a drink.”
I didn’t know how long I blankly stared at the ceiling but got out of my trance when the doorbell rang. Frowning, I hopped off my couch and walked towards the door.
“I thought you said you’ll call me-“ My whole body froze when I yanked the door and saw the last person I expected to be standing behind it. “Fin...”
“Amber...” His brows dipped into a frown like he wasn’t expecting me to open the door of my apartment.
I rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn’t seeing things and not caring about the mascara I put on.
“What are you doing here?” We asked simultaneously, and I raised my brow at him.
“This is my apartment.” I crossed my arms.
“I didn’t mean it like that.” He scratched his head nervously. “I was driving by and then I saw this building- you know what? Just pretend I never came here.”
That’s something I’ve been trying to do for a long time, buddy.
“Wait!” I stopped him when he turned around to leave. “Since you are here, why don’t you come in?”
“Um...” His gaze slid over my body, leaving fire trails. “You look like you’re going somewhere I don’t want to interrupt-“
“You’re not.” I smiled and gestured inside. “Tea or Coffee?”
“I’ll have a coffee.” He beamed and walked into my apartment.
“Do you like it strong or-“
“I like it strong.” He said, keeping his eyes on mine.
It felt like he was talking about something else, but I dismissed it and went to my little open kitchen as he walked around the living room, observing things.
“There’s not much to see here...” I mumbled, remembering the size of his enormous apartment.
“It’s nice.” He smiled, and his eyes landed on the couch, making his shoulders stiffen.
“Are you alright?” I asked when he didn’t move for a while.
“I know it’s going to sound odd, but I think I’ve to been here before.” He mumbled, and my eyes widened.
“You think?”
“I’ve been having these dreams since I came back to New York and uh... I don’t know, but they feel real and...” He turned his head towards me. “You’re in them.” I blinked, trying to process, and that made him panic. “Don’t freak out. I know I sound paranormal-“
“Trust me, you don’t.” I gulped. “How did you find my apartment?”
“I was driving by the city since I didn’t have any plans tonight and then I don’t know how I drove here and saw this building and I just wanted to come here.” He averted his gaze and scratched the back of his neck. “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have come here, and I ruined your night-“
“You have ruined nothing Fin.” I took a step towards him and halted when my phone rang.
“That must be your date. I’ll just leave-“
“No, wait!” I rushed and picked up my phone. “I don’t have a date, it’s just my friend.”
“Oh...” His shoulders relaxed, and he seemed relieved.
“I’m here-“
“Hey Kayla, can we reschedule tonight?“
“Bit*h what? I just drove all the way here in that outrageous traffic and you want to bail on me-“
“Finlay is here,” I said, looking at him. “She knows about you.” I mouthed, and he nodded.
“Oh... Fine hell yeah, get him, girl!” She cheered.
“I’ll talk to you later?”
“I want every little detail-“
“Say hey to Michael bye!” I rushed and hang up the call.
“Are you sure you don’t-“
“It’s no big deal.” I waved my hand and grabbed the coffee beans. “You were saying something about your dreams?”
“Eh yeah...” He walked towards the island and leaned his elbows on it. He told me the little dreams he had, which were the fragments of the moment we spent together.
He didn’t exactly remember me, but he had dreams of them, which gave me a little hope.
“... And there was one in which I got into Angus’s body.” His face scrunched. “Which is hella weird.”
“That it is.” I pressed my lips, trying not to laugh at his cute face as I poured coffee into the cups. “Here.”
“Thanks.” He grinned and took the cup. “Sorry for the rants.”
“I’m not a therapist, but I hope you feel light.”
“This is better than therapy sessions.” He chuckled and glanced at the cup. “I uh... There was another one I had. I was in my room back in Scotland with you and...” He flickered his eyes up at me. “I asked you to kiss me.”
I choked on my drink and slammed the cup on the island, but it slipped. The drink spilled on his jacket, but he didn’t pay attention to it as he came next to me and rubbed my back.
“Calm down...” My entire face is heated in embarrassment as I regain my breath. “Better?”
I nodded my head because I forgot to speak when I felt his firm hand caressing my bare back.
What. The. F**k.
Taking a deep breath, I angled my neck to my right to see him gazing at me. Our faces were only a few inches apart. I looked into his eyes as he darted them all over my face as if memorizing it and landed on my lips. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and he parted his lips.
“You’re beautiful.” He whispered, and I died.
My face blew up like a steam cooker and I felt smoke coming out of my ears. Finlay cleared his throat and took a step back, blushing.
“Um...” I licked my dry lips and looked around the room. “Do you want to watch a movie?”
“Uh... Sure. It’s not like I have anything else to do.” He nodded. “I’ll help you clean.”
“No, I’ll do it,” I said, looking at the spilled coffee. “You should wash your jacket. It’ll stain. The bathroom is-“
“In the bedroom.” He said to me, then frowned. “I don’t know why, but I know.”
“Of course you do,” I murmured as I watched him walk into my bedroom.
I blew deep breaths as I cleaned the mess. I didn’t imagine my night going this way and I’m not complaining. After wiping the island off, I walked into my living and took my heels off.
“What movie do you want to watch?!” I asked, plopping on my couch. I switched through channels as I waited for him to answer. “Finlay?”
He walked out of my bedroom with my penholder in his hand. The same he practiced his powers on.
“How about nine lives?” His lips curled into a grin, making my insides clench. “I didn’t get to see the ending of it.”
A gasp escaped my lips, and I jolted up from the couch towards him and collided with his chest.
“F**k Fin!” I sobbed and squeezed him. He chuckled and pulled me towards him, even though there was no space. “You're back.”
“It's not easy to get rid of me."
