"I get the entire story of you pretending to be my fiancée and getting inside the castle... but what nagging me is why you wanted to solve my case? My father hired Agents to do that."
"Curiosity," I mumbled, taking a sip of my coffee and avoiding both brothers' eyes.
"You did all that just..." Finlay's brows dipped in confusion. "... Because you were curious?"
"That and... I wanted to repay you."
"For what?" He darted his eyes at his brother, who shrugged and then back at mine.
"Back when we were kids, you saved my life." I looked straight into his curious-filled blue eyes. "The girl drowning in the lake."
"You are Phoenix?" His eyes widened while Neil frowned at me.
I knew Neil might think that I was repeating his story, but I had proof. I picked up my purse and took out the paper. When I visited my house yesterday, I looked into my old stuff and found a drawing.
A drawing of a redhead girl emerging from the water and a little boy standing beside the lake.
I didn't remember this drawing, but from one look, I knew who made it. I unfolded the paper and showed it to the brothers. Finlay looked at it in disbelief while Neil stared at it in confusion.
"This is my drawing..." Finlay mumbled, examining it. "And I gave it to..." He trailed off, gaping at me.
"When I found out you were the guy who saved my life, I thought of returning the favor." It was my lame attempt to justify why I did it because I couldn't tell him it was because I used to see his soul.
"Wait... When ah told ye this story..." Neil whispered after processing it. "Ah waz tellin' ye yer own story?"
"Pretty much." I chuckled. "And a little extra." His eyes widened at that and Finlay snapped his head towards him.
"What exactly did you tell her, Neil?" Finlay asked in a low growl.
"Ah told her ye fell in love widh 'er an' planned on marrying her." Neil gave him a sheepish smile.
"Can't you keep anything in that stupid stomach of yours?" Finlay scolded.
"How waz ah supposed to ken she waz the girl?" Neil defended.
"Why were you even telling my pretended fiancee about the girl I was in love with?"
"She asked meh too?!"
Chuckling, I watched the two brothers bickering about me like I wasn't sitting in front of them. Finlay's phone rang cutting them off, and he excused himself saying it was from work, and walked out of the cafe.
"Ah got scolded because of ye." Neil huffed like a little kid and I couldn't help but laugh.
"You brought this on yourself," I smirked.
"Ye could hae told meh it waz ye."
"I wanted to hear his side." He rolled his eyes and looked at his brother.
"That's the only reason ye wanted to do it?"
"Uh..." I dropped my head to my side.
"Ah think there's something else..." He looked dead in my eyes. "Ah feel ye'er hidin' somethin'." I gulped and leaned back in my seat.
"You're just imagining." I sat in awkward silence while he scrutinized me with his brown gaze. "What happened to Blair and Angus?" I asked, changing the topic.
"Both of 'em got life imprisonment." He answered, and I nodded my head.
"And the business?" I glimpsed at Finlay as he paced the footpath talking with someone on the phone. "Finlay got it?"
"Naw,"
"What about his revenge plan?"
"Finlay has changed a lot since he woke up." Looking at his brother, he mumbled. "He for'rgave Grandpa, spent time with faether to built his relationship with him an' he named the businezz to Alistair."
"Really?" My brows shot up at that.
Now that sounds like my Finlay.
"Alistair iz the only one who deserves the family businezz, an' we all ken he can handle it better than meh."
If Blair's greedy a** would have waited, she could have gotten everything.
"What about you and Finlay?" I watched Finlay put his hand in his pocket and halted, then turned to look at us.
"Ah'm helping Alistair manage it, as ah did with mah faether." He shrugged. "Finlay got his job back at his old company."
Finlay works at Knight Corporation.
In the same city as me?
"He did? I thought they replaced him?"
"They did, but when they 'eard his condition got better, they took him in again. He will start there this Monday an' wanted to take a pit stop 'ere to meet his mither." He gave me a sweet smile. "Ah'm glad ah joined him for the weekend." I returned his smile.
"That means you'll be going back?" He nodded.
"We hae a flight in around an hour. Ah'll be goin' back to Scotland an' Finlay will go to NYC."
I wished I hadn't planned on staying the night and booked a flight with them.
"When are ye leavin'?" He asked me.
"I'm going back tomorrow," I mumbled, and that's when Finlay walked back in.
"Hey, I have another question." He still had his hand in his pocket and took it out. My eyes widened when I saw his mother's engagement ring. "Remember this?" I nodded my head.
"Blair took it from me that night."
"We recovered it fae 'er," Neil answered.
"But my question is, how did you know the code to my box?" Finlay blinked his innocent blue eyes at me.
"I... Guessed it." I said uncertainly. Finlay kept staring at me and I shifted in my seat nervously.
"What'z the code?" Neil asked, getting his attention.
"It's the year my mother died." Nineteen ninety-seven. Now it makes sense. "And also the year I met you." He finished, darting his eyes at me.
Wait...
"Even after all these years, ye'er still obsessed widh 'er." Neil chuckled.
Finlay growled at him while my face turned red.
"I'm not a creep, bawbag," Finlay groaned, then looked at me. "I know it sounds freaky but I swear it's not like that-"
"It's alright Fin." I tried to hold my grin. "I don't mind."
"Fin?" Neil's brows rose, and I internally cursed myself. "Don't ye think it'z too soon for nicknames?"
"Haud yer wheesht, Neil," Finlay grumbled, but I saw his ears turn red while Neil laughed his a** off.
"I..." I took a deep breath, trying to keep my furiously beating heart down, but it was getting harder every second. "It just came out."
"Naw, it's fine." Finlay gave me a cheeky grin. "I like you calling me that."
I knew I was red as a tomato by now, and the sly grin on Neil's face confirmed that.
"If ye two lovebirds er done, we need to leave for the flight." We both glared at him and he put his hands in surrender, looking amused by our situation.
"My parents must be waiting for me, too." I lamely said, and we all got up from our seats.
"It waz nice to see ye again Amber," Neil said when we got out of the cafe.
"You too Neil." I beamed then look at Finlay who had a frown on his face.
"Uh... I'm glad I finally got to meet you." Finlay smiled, but it looked forced, and extended his hand in front of me.
"Pleasure is all mine." I grasped his hand, and we shook it lightly.
We both stared at each other and it looked like he wanted to say something, but he didn't.
"We... We'll go now." He nodded his head like he was trying to convince himself and let go of my hand.
"Bro, Abair rithe gu bheil thu fhathast ann an gaol leatha." Neil whispered in his ear and I wished I had my Finlay to translate that.
Finlay elbowed his stomach, making him wince, then gave me a tight smile.
"Again, thank you so much for everything you did for me."
"Now we're even." That was all I uttered because, deep down, my heart was crying for him.
Please remember me...
He pressed his lips and nodded. Neil said farewell, trying to cut the tension. I watched as they get in a taxi and waved to them. The car drove away and stood frozen in my place.
Please...
