33| Jet Lag

I kept tossing and turning in bed and couldn't get a wink of sleep. Giving up, I hopped off the bed and walked towards the window.

"Nightmare?" Finlay asked as he sprawled on the sofa.

"Jet Lag." I sighed and stared outside.

The rain has stopped, but the sky was still covered with grey clouds and the entire field was filled with darkness.

"Do you still see them?" Nodding my head, I glanced at him.

"Now I at least know the reason," I told him about my last nightmare, excluding the part where I almost kissed him.

"It's astonishing how things connect like that."

"I know right." We chuckled and stared at each other with stupid grins on our faces until, out of the blue, he flinched.

"Ouch."

"What was that?" My brows furrowed.

"Nothing." He grunted, rubbing his left arm. "The doctors give me a lot of injections, but this one stings a lot."

"What?" I blinked. "Someone injected you?"

"Yeah. They do this every day and night." He groaned.

"Every night at this hour?"

"Aye." His brows knitted in confusion when he saw the concern on my face. "Don't worry, they are just medicines-"

"But Finlay... I don't think a Doctor would come two in the morning to inject you." I motioned toward the time. His eyes widened when he realized what I was trying to say.

"It's someone from inside."

"We need to look." I bolted towards the door and walked into the hallway aimlessly. "F**k, where is your room?!"

"Upstairs." Finlay rushed ahead of me.

"See who it is. I'll catch up with you."

Nodding his head, he strode past the wall while I looked around and tried to remember the way to his room.

Stairs... I need to find them.

Dashing from one corridor to another, I searched for the stairs until I found them. They weren't the ones that Rosa took me to, but they all take you up. I climbed the stairs two at a time and followed the passage until I heard Finlay.

"Amber to you left!"

I took a sharp turn and a loud gasp escaped my lips when I came face to face with the hoodie guy.

He had a mask covering his face, and his eyes widened when he saw me. Without waiting a second, he shoved me to the side and flew.

"F**k!" I shrieked, grabbing the wall to balance myself. "Wait, you a**hole!" I took after him as he descend the stairs and shouted. "HELP! SOMEONE IS HERE!"

He was fast, but I couldn't lose him after being this close.

"HELP! ANYONE! FINLAY DO SOMETHING!"

Finlay reached out of the wall and stretched his hand toward the guy's leg. The hoodie guy stumbled and collapsed on the floor.

"Now I got you!" I leaped on his back and tried to clasp his hands together.

The guy squirmed beneath me and with all my power; I forced him down, but it wasn't enough. In a swift motion, he jolted up from the floor with me on his back, like he was giving me a piggyback ride.

"Show me your face!" I took his hoodie off and grabbed his mask from behind, but the f**kface bit my hand. "F**k!" I yelped, letting go of him, and landed on my butt.

"Amber! Are you hurt?" Finlay crouched beside me and examined me for injury.

"I'm fine," I grumbled and looked up to see the hoodie guy vanished. "We lost him!" I slammed my hand on the floor.

"Whit iz goin' on 'ere?" Alistair came with Blair beside him, and then Rosa came out with Lewis and Jessica.

"There... Was this guy..." I panted as I tried to tell them. "Finlay."

"Whit happened?" Isla stood on the other side of the hall with Angus.

"Isla, Ah told ye tae stay in ye room!" Jessica glared.

"Ye can scold 'er later." Rosa snapped, then came next to me. "Er ye awright, honey?"

"There was this guy. He injected Finlay with something. I tried to catch him but-but-"

"Easy there." She gave me a side hug, and that's when I realized I was shaking vigorously.

"That guy."

"Where did he run?" Alistair asked, and I pointed towards the hallway. "We'll look for him." He looked at his uncle and he nodded. "Ye too Angus."

"Bloody hell," Angus grumbled but still followed them.

"Ah'll go tell mither whit happened before she comes out." Aunt Jessica yanked Isla with her.

"Ah'll assist ye, Rosa." Blair came next to me and helped me get up.

"Let'z take ye to yer room," Rosa said.

"We need to get a doctor and get Finlay checked. Who knows what he injected into him?" I ranted as they took me to my room.

"How did ye find out?" Blair inquired, making me stiffen.

"I... Intuition." Lying on the bed, I mumbled. "I felt something weird and went to Finlay's room then I saw this guy and when I tried to stop him he pushed me and ran away."

"They will find him." Rosa gave me a reassuring smile.

"Ere, take these." Blair extended a pill bottle in front of me. "These er for anxiety." She explained when she saw me eyeing them.

"Ah dinnae think that'z a good idea," Rosa frowned.

"Dinnae worry, they won't harm ye. They help meh a lot when ah feel anxious." Blair beamed and gave me a tablet with a glass of water. "Ere."

I debated in my head if I should take them or not. But if I do something now, they'll be cautious of me. I need to make them trust me and act dumb.

"Thank you." I took it from her and gulped it down, watching Finlay.

"I'll look after you." He said as I returned the glass to Blair.

"Take some rest. Everything will be just fine." Blair grinned, patting my head, and I suddenly left sleepy.

"Finlay..."

"We'll take care of him." That was the last thing I heard before I drifted off.

Moaning, I opened my eyes and blinked them when I saw an unfamiliar surrounding. Slowly, I got up and glanced out the enormous window to my left. The sun was glowing in the blue sky and something shined. I squinted my eyes and saw something blue ahead.

A lake.

"How are you feeling?" I jerked my head in front to see Finlay standing near the edge of the bed.

"Where am I?" I mumbled, looking around, and that's when it clicked.

I'm in the guest room.

"What did Blair give you?" He leaned toward me. "Do you remember anything?"

"I do now," I grumbled, throwing the duvet.

"Good to have your memory back." He gave me a cheeky grin. "We can't have two people with amnesia solving a mystery."

"Right." I chuckled and plopped on my feet. "How long did I sleep?"

"Well... It's noon."

"Holy crap!" I ran towards the bathroom to get ready. "Anxiety my a**, that bit*h gave me sleeping pills."

"I think it was a good idea for you since you couldn't sleep because of jet lag."

"But I also didn't want to waste the whole day!" I muttered, washing my face. "We need as much time as possible with these people to figure them."

"Right." Finlay nodded.

"What happened after I dozed off?"

"Rosa checked on you, then left with Blair." He shrugged. "The maid only came in the morning to see if you were up, then left."

"What happened outside? Did they catch the guy?"

"I don't know. I didn't leave the room."

"Why?" I asked, combing my hair.

"Because I didn't want to leave you alone defenseless." He said, making me halt. I raised my brows at him. "What?"

"You could've checked things outside."

"Naw..." He shook his head. "What if the Hoodie guy would have come and tried to hurt you?"

"And, hypothetically, if he had come," I smirked. "What would've you done?"

"I don't know." He averted his gaze as his ears turned red.

"Aw... Fin my shining knight in armor." I teased him and burst out laughing when his face turned red.

"Laugh all you want." He looked at me intensely with his ocean eyes, making me pause. "But I'll let no one hurt you."

Someone help me...

I think I'm falling.
