24| Guilty

I had no idea how long I sat there thinking of various ways to kill that wh*re when the door opened and this time Conner entered.

"What's going on, Conner?" I growled.

"I should've known." He scoffed, looking at me with his eyes full of hurt. "You were only using me to get information."

My eyes shut and I swallowed my bitterness, feeling guilty. I knew he would find it someday and will get mad at me for this.

"I broke your heart and for that, you're accusing me of something I didn't do-"

"You were at the club the night the accident happened." I opened my mouth, but he continued. "You went there again and lied about being on a date. The assistant at the Knight Corporation told us that a redhead came asking for Reed's information and when we looked into the cameras, it was you. You also went to Candice's apartment and never told the police about her-"

"Just because of those you think I tried to kill him-"

"You were also at his apartment and wrecked it." My eyes widened at that.

"I did no such thing!"

How do they know I was there? I wore gloves and left no fingers prints!

"We found this..." He took a plastic bag out of his coat and showed it to me. "In this wardrobe."

My heart dropped in my stomach when I saw my hair strand in the bag. I remembered my hair got stuck in the wood when I was hiding in it from the hoodie guy.

F**k I'm in deep trouble now!

"Cat caught your tongue?" Conner narrowed his eyes at me.

"I didn't crash his house." I gritted through my teeth.

"You're not denying these."

"Just because they're red, you think they're mine?" I crossed the question to him.

"If they are not yours." Oliver stepped inside the room with a smug grin on his face. "You won't mind a test right, Miss Katz."

I glared at him and was saved from saying anything as I heard my uncle's voice booming.

"Where is my niece?!"

Both Oliver and Conner walked out of the room, leaving me behind. I was restless and looked in the mirror to know what was going on, but only saw myself.

"Wait," Finlay mumbled and walked to the mirror.

I watched as he pressed his head through the mirror. It was weird watching his headless body, but I had other things to worry about.

"Your uncle brought some people with him and Conner is trying to calm him down," Finlay said, then turned his head back there again.

"What is going on?" I mumbled, tapping my fingers on the table.

"He said they don't have firm evidence and can't charge you, but Oliver is hell-bent on the test."

Sh*t!

They can't charge me for other things, but if they got the test, then I'm dead.

The door slammed open, and my uncle with a red face barged in, making me yelp.

"Amber, let them do the DNA test and we're out of this place."

I gulped and fisted my hands, knowing I couldn't get out of this easily. A guy in a lab coat came inside with Oliver and Conner.

"Do the test and about the accusations of that blonde girl." Uncle fumed at Oliver. "We'll deal with that on the trail."

Trial?

The guy wearing a white coat stepped closer to me and I knew I had no choice but to give in. He took a tweezer and pulled a hair strand from my head, making me wince. I licked my dry lips as I watched him put in a tissue and then a plastic bag with my name on it.

"The test results will be out tomorrow." He said, walking out of the room.

Tomorrow?

"We'll set the trail and let know the timings-"

"You're going to regret dragging my niece into this bullish*t." Uncle cut off Oliver as he shot daggers at Conner.

He gestured for me to get up and I obediently followed him out of the Field Office into his limo.

My heart was furiously beating in my chest at the thought of the test.

"What were you thinking Amber?!" He growled after sitting in silence. "Finlay's case was closed, so why were you digging it?" I glanced at Finlay, who was quietly sitting in the limo.

"You told me to look for a story-"

"But I didn't tell you to get in a mess!" He growled and took deep breaths, trying to calm his blood pressure. "Accused of attempted murder and what that blondie said-"

"What did she say?" He darted his angry gaze at me.

"That you met them on the night of Finlay's accident and got obsessed with him, but when you saw her with him you got mad..." My jaw dropped as I listened to him and the made-up stories of Candice. "She says you might be the one who did it and-"

"That f**king sl*t of a bit*h!" I screamed in frustration. "That h*e was Finlay's f**k buddy, but he ended things with her and for money, she called Finlay there that night!"

"How do you know all this?" He narrowed his eyes at me.

"I met her..." I mumbled, and his eyes widened in anger.

He gave me a lecture on how irresponsible I was and reminded me of the crises I got myself as a kid.

"Uncle, can you cut me some slack? I'm the one getting accused-"

"And I'm the one who is saving your a** again!" He scolded. "Your mother will get frantic when she'll find out about this-"

"You won't tell her!" I cut him off as my eyes bugged out.

"What?" He frowned.

"Don't tell her please, uncle." I pleaded with him as the car came to a halt. "Or else she'll call me back to Pennsylvania and that place is not for me."

He darted his eyes over my face and then sighed. "Fine, I won't tell her, but we need to prepare for tomorrow and those hair strands..." He side glanced at me. "They're not yours... Right?"

Gulping, I shook my head and knew I couldn't tell him the truth, or else he will burst out at me and tell my mother. He nodded his head and got out of the car.

I looked around to see we were at our office, but I wasn't in the mood to go inside.

"I need a walk."

"We need to discuss your case-"

"Just for a while. I need to clear my head." He raised his brows at me and then nodded.

I turned on my heels and began walking away. I felt a presence behind me and glanced back to see Finlay.

"I'm sorry Amber-"

"Don't."

"You got in this mess because of me-"

"I said don't!" I halted and faced him to see him frowning. "Can't you hear me?!"

"I know you're angry-"

"Angry?" I snorted. "I'm furious at everyone! At my uncle for telling me to look for a story. At Kayla for bringing me to the club, those two f**kfaces who spilled drink at me. I'm mad at that blonde bit*h for blaming me, of you for coming into my life, and most of all myself for dragging me into your sh*t!"

"Amber-"

"I should have let you go that day, but I was stupid because I wanted this story for my promotion!" My chest heaved with anger as Finlay watched me in confusion.

"You were doing this for your... Promotion?"

"Of course!" I spat. "What do you think, Finlay? That I cared for a ghost who came into my life out of nowhere?"

I knew what I was doing was wrong and I should have stopped, but I couldn't control my outrage.

"No! I did all this for myself so I can move forward with my career. But I got in a mess because of f**king hair! I can not have a criminal record for f**k's sake. I'm a journalist! It will ruin my entire career!"

"I..." He jammed his hands in his pockets. "I thought you were doing this for me."

"Sorry for the bitter truth, but I don't give a sh*t about you Finlay."
