21| Cockburn

After eating my sandwich, we drove toward my apartment again. We sat in my living room with my laptop and googled Aurora Reed.

Narrowing the search to New York University, we finally found a few Auroras, and, after searching for hours, we found Finlay's mother.

The woman in the group graduation photo was the same as the one in the box, only this one was a younger version.

"She's beautiful," I mumbled as I looked at the other people in the picture and my eyes caught a guy.

He looked exactly like Finlay, except that he had dark brown eyes.

"Is he..." I pointed at him and saw Finlay frown.

"My father." He confirmed.

I looked for a Fergus in the same year and there weren't many guys of this name, so it was easy to look. I listed down a few Fergus, but one of them stood out.

Fergus Cockburn.

It wasn't a common American name, so I opened a new tab and wrote his name.

The same guy, only his older version, showed up on the screen.

"You found him," Finlay murmured beside me.

"He's a f**king business tycoon." I scrolled down and read his description.

Turned out his father owned a whiskey business in Scotland which he inherited from his father under the name of Cockburn.

"Conner was right about them being rich." He frowned.

"And what the f**k is, Cockburn?" I searched, and it was a clan in Scotland.

"It's pronounced as Coburn." He pointed at the screen.

"But it's written Cock here." I chuckled. "No wonder you changed it to Reed."

"You've got a dirty mind, Amber." He smirked, and I gulped, glancing at his lips.

"Oh, you have no idea." My eyes darted from his lips to his eyes.

The intensity of his gaze melted me on the couch. I watched his gaze deliberately glide from my eyes to my lips and they suddenly felt dry. I didn't know what was going on in my head, but I leaned toward him.

But before I could embarrass myself by passing through his face, the doorbell rang, making me halt.

"Are you expecting someone?" He asked, still dazed.

"Not that I know of any," I mumbled and got off the couch.

What are you thinking Amber?!

Control yourself!

I felt my face heating, and I shook my head as I walked toward the door. I peeked through the peephole and sighed when I saw angry Kayla on the other side.

"It's my friend." I narrowed my eyes at Finlay. "So behave."

"Don't I always." He gave me a cocky grin, and I rolled my eyes at him.

Plastering a smile on my face, I yanked the door open.

"Kayla! What a surprise-"

"What is wrong with you Amber?!" she scowled as she stormed into my apartment.

"What do you mean?" I acted obviously as I closed the door and followed her to the living room.

"You were at Soul Groove last night." She crossed her arms. "Don't even ask how I know about it."

"Micheal really needs to learn when to shut up," I grumbled.

"And you need to tell me exactly what is going on." She huffed. "Your obsession with Reed is getting weird."

"I'm not obsessed with him!" I groaned, running my fingers through my hair.

"Then why were you looking for some Blondie and talking to that... Whatever that guy's name was?"

"Bill."

"Yeah him." She crossed her arms. "You need to tell me exactly what is going on or else you'll get in trouble."

"What will you do?" I narrowed my eyes at her.

"I won't do anything... But Conner will."

"What does that supposed to mean?"

"Michael told me he found the blondie you were looking for." My jaw dropped at that.

"F**k, he's fast," I mumbled, scratching my head.

"You have met her, haven't you?" She tilted her head, and I gulped. "What if she tells them about you? Have you thought of it before meeting her?"

"I have the upper hand here. I thought I'll solve the case before them."

"How?"

"I... I have something... More like someone they don't."

"Who?"

"I can't tell you." I shook my head.

"Why?" She looked at me in disbelief.

"You won't believe it even if I tell you."

"Try me." She sighed, and I glanced at Finlay, who was still sitting on the couch and darted his eyes between me and Kayla.

"You should tell her."

"She'll think I'm crazy."

"I'm already thinking that." She said, making me look at her. "Who are you talking to?" She eyed the couch.

"Finlay," I answered honestly.

"Excuse me?" She choked.

"The reason I'm interested in this case is that I can see Finlay Reed."

She blinked her eyes at me as she processed my words. "I can see him too."

"W-hat?" My eyes widened. "You can see him?"

"Yes. In the ICU." She said in a duh tone.

"No, not that Kayla... I can see Finlay as in he's sitting here right now on my couch."

Her brows knitted in confusion, and she deliberately turned her head toward Finlay. He gave her a grin, but obviously, she couldn't see him.

"How stupid do you think I am?" she scoffed, looking back at me.

"I'm not joking Kayla."

I told her everything from the beginning of how I met him and saw his soul. She quietly listened to me and said nothing, but from her expression, I could tell she thought I lost a few screws.

"Did you hit your head or something?" She said, making me roll my eyes. "Because what you are saying makes no sense-"

"I know, but I can prove it to you." I turned towards Finlay. "Show her."

"What-" Kayla mid paused in her sentence when Finlay moved the table lamp and it floated in the air. "What the f**k?!" Kayla shrieked and jumped behind me.

"He can move things with his powers," I explained as the lamp flew back to its position.

"Is this some kind of prank?" She squeaked, looking around my apartment. "Where are the hidden cameras?"

"I already told you the story, Kayla." I snorted. "This is the reason I didn't tell you." She paused and looked at me.

"Don't get me wrong. But what you're saying is something..." she trailed off.

"I'm aware of that, but please believe me." I gave her my best puppy dog face.

"So that means..." she whispered, peeking at the couch from my shoulder. "He's really sitting on your couch right now?"

"Yes, he is." I grinned at Finlay and he winked at me.

"Why are you the only one who can see him?"

"That's what I'm trying to find," I mumbled and took her to the couch.

I sat in the middle with Finlay on the right. Kayla stood and darted her eyes between the seats beside me.

"Where is he sitting?"

"Here." I jerked my thumb and picked up my laptop.

Kayla hesitantly sat on my left and I showed her my research and whatever I got from the story.

"Let me get this straight. You are helping a ghost with amnesia who only you can see."

"Lucky me."

"And he got powers, too."

"Something like that."

"What else he can do?"

"He can walk past doors and walls and can make things fly with his hands."

"Can he possess someone?" I shrugged.

"I asked him to try it on me, but he refused."

"Because it's stupid." Finlay interrupted.

"It is not." I scoffed, and Kayla raised her brow.

"He thinks it's stupid."

"It's exciting." She grinned.

"I know right." We giggled, and Finlay mumbled something like crazy girls beside me.

"Ask him to try it on me." She squealed and jumped from her seat. "This is so freaking cool!"

"I'm not doing it." Finlay shook his head.

"Oh, come on. Give it a shot. If anything goes wrong, I'll be here." I encouraged him. "We need to test your skills, Fin."

He stared into my eyes, and I pouted as I waited for him to reply.

"What is he saying?" Kayla asked.

"Fin?" I batted my eyelashes at him. "Please."

"Fine." He sighed, giving up, and I squealed.

"He is doing it!"
