13| Knight Corporation
The next day, we stood outside the enormous building made of glass. The exterior of the building was gorgeous and made my jaw drop at the sight of it. Other buildings around looked tiny in front of this and I wondered how many floors it had.
"I can't believe you worked here," I whispered and glanced to my left.
"Me either." He had his jaw dropped like mine as he gawked at the building.
"Let's go." I cleared my throat and soothed my hair, which was parted from the middle and wrapped in a high pony.
I wore a cream and black print spaghetti strap tank top with cream high waist belt pants and the same color blazer. It was a professional look, and that was needed to visit a high-profile company like Knight Corporation.
"Shouldn't you be at work right now?" Finlay asked as we walked towards the main gate.
"I took a day off," I answered, wearing my EarPods so it'll look like I'm on a call and not talking to a ghost beside me.
"They gave you?"
"I told them I'm on my period and was having cramps. They had little choice when I wept, holding my stomach..." I shrugged. "I do little work there since my uncle made me a f**king sub, sub writer. It won't make any difference if I'm there or not. But that will change after I'm done with you." I mumbled the last part.
"Good afternoon Ma'am." The old security guard who looked in his late forties gave me a warming smile.
"Good afternoon to you too, sir." I returned his smile and thanked him when he opened the door for me.
I entered the building and took in the beautiful interior before walking towards the reception. My white pump heels clicked on the spotless marble floor and my eyes roamed around the black and white furniture and walls.
"What are you planning?" Finlay asked when he saw me taking my fake glasses out of my pocket. "What are those?"
"My lucky glasses." I winked at him. "To make me look smart."
His brows knitted in confusion, but I ignored him and hugged the file in my hands as I stopped at the reception. I looked around and grinned when I saw everyone dressed formally as me.
I knew it was a perfect choice!
"Good afternoon Ma'am. Welcome to Knight Corporation. What can I do for you?" The girl behind the reception asked me without taking her eyes off the computer screen.
"I'm here to meet the HR for my interview." I lied.
"Interview?" She finally glanced up at me. "For what?"
"For the CFO position."
"I'm not aware they set an interview for his position." The girl frowned. "Let me check."
"Sure." I gestured to her and leaned my arms over the counter. "It's awful tragic what happened to you last CFO." I gave her a sad smile.
"Yeah..." She gave a quick answer as she typed furiously on her keyboard.
"He looked like a nice guy..." I observed her to see if she shows any signs. "And quite handsome."
Finlay coughed beside me, and I resisted growling at him. She raised her brow at me and gave me a once-over.
"Do you know how he is now? I have seen no recent news related to him."
"I'm sorry Ma'am. I can't talk about our employees with you. It's against our policy."
"Oh, come on!" I giggled, waving my hand. "I'm not asking for his address. The poor guy must have a family waiting for him at home." I wiped the corner of my eye even though there wasn't any tear. "His kids must be waiting for their daddy to wake up and come home soon so they can go to the Park and eat ice cream and-"
"Ma'am." I slammed my mouth shut when the girl cut me off. "They have already replaced someone else for this position."
"Damn..." I clicked my tongue. "I'm late again."
"Now if you'll excuse me-"
"Still about that guy." I interrupted. "Did you know him? I mean, since you work in the same company."
"I don't know him, Ma'am. I recently joined this-"
"That's great!" I clasped my hand. "Working in this marvelous company is the dream of us all!"
"Yeah now. It's our month end and I have work to do. Can you-"
"No wonder how hard it must have been for Mr. Reed to get a job here, and now he is in a hospital bed."
"Ma'am, I told you I can not talk about the employees now. Can you please leave?" The girl said in a low tone, and I knew she was running out of patience.
"Alright, but can I meet the CEO here? Just to give my condolences for their employee."
"He is not here at the moment and Ma'am, can you please leave now, or else I'll have to call the security?"
"Security?" I scoffed. "I'm feeling sad for the guy and I know how hard it can be for the companies to work without their jewels-"
"I'm calling security-" She reached for the phone but I stopped her.
"Geez girl. What crawled up your panties?" Her brows shot up at the sudden change in my behavior. "I'm leaving."
I flipped my hair at her and walked out of the building.
"That went well," Finlay said in sarcasm.
"I can't believe that bit*h didn't say a word." I huffed and took my glasses off. "My lucky glasses didn't even work!"
"What now?"
"You are such a mystery, Finlay Reed." I sighed.
"Did you say, Reed?" I stiffened and turned towards the old guard who opened the door for me earlier.
"Yeah, Finlay Reed." I pointed at the building. "He used to work here."
"I know." The guard chuckled. "I saw him every day."
My eyes widened when an idea clicked in my head. He's the security guard. He must know something, and he looked friendly.
"How long have you worked here?"
"I've worked for the Knights my whole life." He said proudly with a smile.
"And Mr. Reed?" I asked, stepping towards him.
"I've seen him here for the last three years." He glanced down as sadness took over his face. "He is such an elegant gentleman, but the poor man got into an accident."
"What do you know about him?"
"He used to come on time and leave exactly on point, not even a minute late."
Punctual.
"Every morning he came with a Starbucks coffee. One for himself and another for me." He smiled at the memory and I glance at Finlay to see his reaction, but he had a frown on his face as he listened to him.
A decent man.
And he likes Starbucks.
"Do you know anything else? Girlfriend? Wife or kids?"
"As much as I know, he wasn't married or had any kids." The guy shrugged.
"Family?" I asked, losing all hope when the guy shook his head.
"Wait..." He said, making me hold. "Another Scottish guy came to see Mr. Reed once."
A Scottish guy?
"Who was he?"
"I don't know..." He trailed off, scratching his head.
"Do you remember anything else?"
The guy frowned and looked like he was trying hard to remember. After a minute I was about to tell him to stop before his brain explodes but he mumbled.
"I'm not sure, but they were having a nasty conversation and Mr. Reed was asking him to leave repeatedly, but he was stubborn. In the end, Mr. Reed gave in and told him he'll meet him somewhere."
"When did this happen?"
"I think it was a month ago..."
"Do you remember his name or how he looked or anything else?"
"No..." He shook his head. "He looked a little like Mr. Reed..." My brows shot up at that.
Looked like Finlay?
Must be a family member.
I forced him a little to remember more, but he knew nothing else. Feeling defeated, I blew a breath and walked out of the building.
"That wasn't much help," Finlay said, and I sighed.
"I can't believe I'm saying this... But Candice is the only one who can help us now."
We need to find her.
