Chapter 2

When Kari woke up the next day she looked around with a tired expression then went wide eyed. She felt herself tear up and started to cry out of pure joy. Flo, who slept to her left, pulled the ten year old into a hug and swayed lightly to comfort her. The twins sighed and hugged each other for comfort while Kitearo watched with a small smile and relaxed eyes.

"Hey, we should change. Let's fix our clothes so they actually fit us." Flo stated after a moment of silence. Kari nodded and the two let go of each other and grabbed their stuff then went to the three boys in the group, who were on the ground waiting for them. The five put their folded clothes side by side from right to left oldest to youngest. Kari then enlarged the clothes so they would fit their respective owners then everyone found a spot to change into their clothes.

Kitearo wore a gray t-shirt with black sleeves, blue jeans, a dark gray bandanna around his left upper arm, a dog tag with his symbol carved into it and chain, and black tennis shoes.

Flo wore a maroon v-neck shirt with a white undershirt, a gray skirt with maroon seams, black leggings, and burnt gold flat tops with a little black.

Boom wore a blue t-shirt with a black sleeves and a black eighth note on the front, dark blue jeans that were loose around the legs, and black converse shoes. Beats wore similar clothing except the colors were switched while Kari wore the clothes she wore in the underground five years ago.

"Okay. So we head towards the abandoned camping grounds that were used for tourists by the village about five hours away. It was forgotten about a year ago. We should go there to gather supplies and stay for a while then move on when the place is dry." Kitearo said. The other four members of the group nodded in unison and then they were off. Kari sighed and kept looking at the ground while she stayed in the back of the group. The group made a quick pit stop to eat some food that Kitearo stole before leaving the H.M.O.T.G the night before. During this break Kari looked at her phone. It still worked, to her surprise. She turned it on, it still had some power left. Kari noticed she had a few voicemails. They were all from Sans. Kari looked at the oldest first.

"Hello? Oh, it went to voicemail... Uh, hey kid. It's Sans, if you didn't know. Uh, hey, listen bud, where have you been? You just up and disappeared about two weeks ago. Are you okay Kari? I sure hope so, I still have a bunch of puns to tell ya tibia honest." Sans chuckled. "So, uh, call me back as soon as you get this, ya hear? Undyne and Papyrus are worried about ya and so are Alphys and Mettaton."

"Mettaton?" Kari thought to herself in slight confusion.

"Oh, yeah. Forgot to mention, Mettaton and Alphys were just trying to get you to stay. It was all Alphys's plan at first, but she regretted it." Sans sighed. "Listen, call me back right after you hear this." The voicemail was over. Kari went wide eyed and quickly pulled up the next one.

"Hey Kari... Uh, I haven't heard from you in a few months. Are you alright? A lot is going on here. The surface is doing a lot of construction that is shaking the ground a bunch." Sans sounded a little upset. "But uh, I'm sure you're fine. Maybe you're up on the surface. It beats being down here. Well, gotta go. Papyrus needs his bedtime story." There was another, and another. The last voice mail was from three years ago and that one made Kari want to cry, but she did not because of the H.M.O.T.G making her think that she would get killed if she showed too much emotion.

"Kari," It was Toriel. "Kari, my child. I heard the stories from Sans. My child, I'm so sorry you had to go through such a thing. I don't know what happened to you. But wherever you are please be careful. Oh, and I'm using Sans's phone because I left mine at home on accident. I came to visit for a while from the castle. Uh... I'm at the castle because... I'm taking Asgore's place because... Well, I won't burden you with such details. I will be going now. Sans, do you want to say anything?"

"Sure." Sans took the phone. "Hey kid. A lot has changed. If I do somehow see you again... Well, I hope I don't, tibia honest." Toriel snickered. "The reason being... Things are different in a bad way... But if you do come back then I'll explain. Well, see ya around I guess, Kari." The voicemail ended and Kari felt her heart hurt. What had happened down there? Kari kept herself together then looked at Kitearo.

"Let's get going." The sixteen year old called and everyone was off once again.

----------

In the underground at the outpost in Snowdin, Sans slept soundly during his usually long break. His smile widened as he dreamt of the past a little.

"Sans!! Hey can I hear another joke?" A five year old Kari asked kindly while sitting on the couch next to the skeleton. Sans's smile widened and he glanced down at the child.

"Sure kid. Lets see... Oh, what did the snowman say to his friend?"

"What?" Kari asked innocently while tilting her head lightly.

"Ice to see you again!" Kari laughed wildly.

"That was funny, Sans!!" She called and Sans chuckled while messing with the child's hair. "I got one. How come the skeleton was so blue?"

"Why's that?" Sans asked with a content sigh. Kari looked down and frowned.

"Because she... W a s  s o  b o n e l y..." Sans felt a chill rush up his spine and he looked to his right quickly to see that Kari was gone and in her place was Chase, standing on his hind legs and looking up at him. "Why didn't you help me?" Kari's voice came from the plush. It sounded sad. "Why, Sans. You said you'd help me. Sans, you said you'd help me... Help me... Help me..." Sans backed away, his smile showing bitterness and a little fear. "You didn't come when I needed you." Chase's head looked down. Kari's voice began to sound a little distorted and sad. "You gave me false hope. Sans. Where am I? Sans. Help me. Sans."

----------

"SANS!!" Papyrus called and Sans jolted from his sleep then looked around quickly. "Sans, are you alright? Did you have another nightmare?" Papyrus asked.

"Y-yeah." Sans replied. "I... Kinda wish I could have told Kari goodbye at least or even knew where she went. That way I wouldn't be worried." Sans's expression saddened. Papyrus just looked at his brother.

"Hey. I know you two were close, you were practically inseparable when she stayed with us to heal her leg. It was kinda cute." Papyrus smiled weakly and Sans just nodded. "Look. We all miss her and wish we knew where she was but we... We need to keep going. I'm sure she would want that." Sans nodded.

"Yeah... Your right. She wouldn't want us being so... Sternum." Sans said while trying to crack a joke and laugh it off. Papyrus growled lightly in anger.

"... Get back to work Sans." The taller skeleton nagged then walked off back to his post. Sans sighed and glanced down. He missed Kari a lot. Even though he barely knew Kari, he felt like she was a good kid and she kind of grew on him, in a sense. The girl loved his jokes and would even try to make some of her own, even if they were bad. Kari had also managed to grow a little on Undyne. The captain of the royal guard would come over every now and again while Kari stayed at the skeleton brother's house and hang out with Kari, teaching her how to cook and how to defend and fight. Kari did not always pay attention to Undyne when she talked about fighting but she did sometimes. Sans sighed and got back to work. Well, more like slacking off than work.

----------

Alphys gulped and looked around the true lab with a confused expression. She then stopped and stared at a steel door.

"That room was right here five years ago..." She thought. "But it vanished instantly when I left it feeling sick..." Alphys shivered. "B-b-but no-now here it is. Right in front of me again. Why? It's been five years." Alphys shivered in fear and backed away. "I-I-I can't d-d-deal wi-with this now. I'm too busy with other things... Oh man, what is going on?"

----------

"Kari, did you and the twins bring anything good back from hunting?" Flo called while she made a fire in the old fire pit. Kari walked up with blood-covered hands and some dirt on her face as well as all over her body. The girl held up five rabbits by their hind legs, all of which were skinned, with some blood dripping off from puncture wounds. "Did you thank them for the food?" Flo asked while the fire burned. Kari nodded.

"We both got some birds. I got ten." Boom called out with a smile. His head had some bird poop on it and he was covered in dirt like his brother.

"I got eleven." Beats snickered. Boom growled and the two began to bicker in the background.

"Well, that's a nice haul you three. Here, I'll cook up the food. Kitearo should be back from fixing up some of the old cabins soon. If you want, you could go help him." The fourteen year old informed. Kari nodded, then left to go help Kitearo. She walked towards the cabins to the right of the camp fire, specifically towards the charred cabin the group would be staying in. Kari noticed Kitearo and walked up to him, tugging his shirt a little with her left hand to get his attention.

"Huh? Oh, hey Kar-kar. What's up?" He asked with a smile. Kari pointed to herself with her right hand. "You wanna help?" Kari nodded. Kitearo sighed with a smile. "Sure kid. Come on, I'll need some support here and there." Kari nodded and got to work helping the leader of the group.

Hours went by and the five were sitting around the campfire, eating the cooked rabbit and birds while telling stories and laughing.

"---then I was all like, "What? Can't handle the boom!" and they just ran away scared!" Boom laughed along with Beats. Kitearo snickered and Flo giggled. Kari just ate and stared at the stars in the sky.

"Hey, Kari." Flo smiled. "Why not tell us one of those stories, from when you escaped five years ago." Kari looked at Flo and blinked. She looked down at her food and began to eat again. Flo frowned.

"Hey. She's been through a lot... Remember she was targeted... That's why she was given the code of unlucky 13. She was given the worst treatment out of all of us." Kitearo whispered to Flo.

"I know... I just... wish she would speak again..." Flo gulped down tears and sighed. "She rarely talks and I don't like seeing her like this..." Kari swallowed a bite of food then stood up.

"Goin to bed?" Beats asked while looking at the girl. Kari nodded. "Kay."

"Sleep well, Kari." Flo said. "I'll join you in a bit." Kari nodded.

"See ya kid." Kitearo waved.

"Bye Tiny! Have sweet dreams!!" Boom called and Kari glared at him. The teen giggled nervously. "I'm just messing with ya Kari." He said. Kari just huffed and walked off. The girl walked into the cabin and got onto the bed that she claimed about an hour ago. It had the pillow and blanket that were given to her by Toriel. Kari shivered then took out the hoodie that Sans gave her since she knew the blanket would not be enough. She curled up like she used to, in a burrito-like shape, and slowly drifted to sleep. Dreaming of her time in the Underground for a short time until it was cut short by nightmares.
