Alex Has a Problem

Next time I saw Alex, something was definitely off. He forgot a lot of his lines. He got a good scolding from Mrs. Freida about that.

"Sorry Mrs. Freida." he said nervously.

"It's alright, just make sure you study extra hard, alright?" She sighed, looking at her copy of the script. "Lets move on."

I caught him after practice was over. "You doing alright?"

"Oh yeah, I'm doing fine." He laughed quickly. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"You've been acting off, literally." I explained. "Is it because of that stuff I told you yesterday?"

As soon as I had gotten done talking to Arthur I had called Alex, because he was relevant to the situation. I had left out the part where I told Arthur to at least consider widening his horizons. Arthur hadn't acted any different today, he didn't want to hang out. He was kind of quiet actually. Mrs. Freida had pointed it out.

"No...it's something else." Alex sighed, as we zipped up our backpacks and got ready to leave.

"Do you want to talk about it?" I raised an eyebrow.

He bit his lip. "I think I found my soulmate."

I blinked in surprise. "Whoa, congratulations? Why're you so off about it?"

"They don't know." He grimaced. "And I'm not sure, I said I think."

Suddenly a very short but menacing presence made herself known to us.

"H-hi Maria." Alex blinked, casting me a confused look.

"What up, nerds. I hear you're having a problem." She huffed, flipping her hair out of the way.

"Uh..." Alex stared at her in distress. "Yes...?"

She gestured for us to come closer, like she wanted to whisper something at us. In reality the two of us just had to lean down, but still.

"Now I'm going to be completely honest with you..." She started.

"Are you going to give me advice?" Alex asked in obvious doubt.

"No, shut up. I'm going through the same exact problem and Micah always looks like he has everything together. Help." She admitted.

I frowned. "You're both aiming to me...for relationship advice?"

They nodded in unison, staring at me expectantly.

"Oh...oh boy." I sighed, scratching the back of my head. "I'm not sure I'm the best person to-"

"But you're already in a relationship." Maria pointed out.

I froze and my heart skipped a beat, and promptly dropped into my stomach in one fell swoop. "What?"

"What?" Alex added.

"I've seen you gush over your phone." Maria shrugged.

I sputtered. "That could mean anything! You have no proof-"

"You got a text, squealed, and clutched your hands to face, blushing madly-" She listed.

"Now that just sounds like fanfic." Alex grumbled.

"Shut up. I'm right." Maria insisted, pointing a finger at him, it wasn't her pointer finger.

"Okay...fine." I interrupted before they could start fighting each other. "Yes...I am currently in a relationship."

Alex blinked in surprise. "Really?"

"Yes..." I said slowly.

"Oh."

"Okay but back to my problem." Maria diverted the conversation back to her.

"And mine." Alex added.

"What do we do?" She asked. "I know for sure who my soulmate is, and I'm almost one hundred percent certain they have no idea who I am."

"I know them...I'm just pretty certain they hate me." Alex sighed.

"Oh, oh dear." I frowned, thinking about all of that. "Uh, well Maria, I would just introduce yourself to them. From my experience with soulmates, things might be awkward at first but it get's easier, you gotta meet first. Alex, that same thing actually happened to me. Once we found out...she actually started being super nice towards me."

I hated calling Greg 'she'. I knew it was wrong with every bone in my body. I just couldn't tell him, not after what happened with my dad. Not everyone was a Julia or an Abby. I had just met Alex at the start of the year, I'm not sure we were that close yet.

"Wait so you've found your soulmate?" Alex blinked again. "How long ago was this?"

I shrugged. "I don't know, a few weeks. We had just met."

He nodded. "Oh okay."

"So you're saying I should just go talk to him." Maria decided.

"Yes." I told her.

"And you're saying I should like...tackle them or something." Alex frowned.

"Absolutely."

They stared at me again for some time.

"Yeah okay that's the last time I ask a boy for advice." Maria threw her hands up and walked away.

"Drama queen." Alex muttered, watching her go.

"Her? More like you." I snorted.

"Touché." He nodded. "Seriously though...I think I'm going to take your advice."

"You're gonna tackle your soulmate?" I asked, amused.

He blushed and shook his head. "No. I meant I was gonna say hi. How exactly did you do it?"

"I was in the locker rooms and she tried to punch me." My voice cracked when I lied again, I hoped that wasn't obvious.

Alex blinked. "Intense! I hope you don't mind me asking...but who is your soulmate?"

I bit my lip. "I'm not sure I'm ready to tell you that, are you going to tell me who yours is?"

He nodded in understanding. "No...I guess we're even then, but if I ever need to tell you promise you'll tell me yours?"

I shrugged, why the heck not. "Promise."

"Alright! Thanks for staying late by the way, I'll see you later?" He waved, as he walked away.

"No problem, and yeah I'll see you next practice." I said.

On my home I got a call from Abby. It was refreshing because she had been busy lately and I had only seen her at lunch or in the mornings.

"Hey M-slice, how are things? I didn't get to see you today." She greeted cheerfully.

"Oh you won't believe what just happened..."

I started happily talking about my day, blissfully unaware of the chaos the following weekend would bring.
