Chapter 9: Cold
I looked at Black Star, the feeling of a heavy ball of lead in my stomach beginning. He was grinning at me, his eyes happy and maybe the slightest dust of a blush across his cheeks.
"Well?" he asked, and I felt something in me break. I felt like I had been here before, and I hated it. He pulled a pen out of nowhere and handed it to me. He held out his hand, grinning again.
I gulped and smiled a little. I reached forward with the pen and wrote down on his palm. 'Can I think?' I wrote, and he looked at the words. He smiled and nodded. "Sure. You'll come around!" he said, standing up and placing his hands on his hips. "I, the almighty Black Star, have finally have not been turned down instantly!" he said, grinning.
We went back to the pet shop, and it was around four now. The day had flown by, and I was wondering how I had lost track of time? The woman smiled at us when we walked in, the three Dobermans going in and laying on the floor, the little puppy asleep in my arms.
"Ah. You're back." She said. She came over to me and scratched the husky's ears. "Were they good?" she asked.
"They were great!" Black Star said, slamming into the pet shop. We had decided to race back to the shop, and I had beaten Black Star, even though I had the dogs, because he had tried to use a, quote, "super extra secret back way". Clearly, it was secret, but not fast.
"That's good." The woman said. She looked around the shop. "Thanks for helping today.." She seemed to look about again, and then turned her eyes to me. "If you ever want a job," she said, holding a thumbs up. "The animals like you. Maybe next time I'll have you feed the snakes." She said, and my eyes widened, and I shook my head quickly.
She laughed, and then looked at the puppy in my arms, as if she was thinking. "You've taken a liking to that little guy, haven't you?" she asked, and I looked at her. She pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, writing some things down on it. "If you want to keep him, I'll give him to you." She said. I looked at her, wondering if she was serious.
When she saw my face, she started laughing. "I'm serious!" she said. "He can be your service dog." She said. She held out the piece of paper she had been writing on, and I took it, looking at it. The small dog in my arms started sniffing it, the smell of the fresh ink strong. "I'll provide you with everything you need, and you can work here to pay for it." She said.
I moved around the counter and hugged her. The shivering sensation of fear and uneasiness ran through me for a second, but I ignored it and a moment later, it was gone. I looked up into her big brown eyes and her smiling face. She ruffled my hair and stood up from her stool behind the counter. "Let's get you what you need. Black Star will carry it for you." She said.
Black Star and I were walking back to the Academy, the husky puppy now having a collar with a little tag on it, reading "Skye". It was the name that I had chosen for the little dog. He was walking around my feet, sniffing everything around the stairs of the DWMA. I held a small bag in my hand that wasn't holding Skye's leash. It had a few different things in it, a dog water and food bowl, a little jacket for the cold weather, a chew toy. The woman who owned the pet shop, her name Nora, had chosen all of the things out, picking colors and what-not. I liked everything that she chose.
We reached the top of the stairs, Black Star not even breathing out of the ordinary, even though he was carrying a giant bag of dog food, a fluffy black dog bed, and a kind of dog littler box thing, along with the sand that went into it.
As we walked into the school, it was around five-thirty, and no one was there, except for teachers who were getting ready to leave, or students that lived in the Academy. We walked down the few hallways to the student apartments, walking up the staircase to where my living area was.
"Do you know if you can have a dog in the student apartments?" Black Star asked. I looked over to him and I shrugged. "I guess Nora said that he can be your service dog, so I guess you can." He said.
When we reached the office where the woman who worked here, Azure, was, I saw her and waved a little. She looked up at me, and when she saw the puppy, her eyes lit up. "A puppy!" she said, moving from around her desk and running out of her office, bending down next to the small husky and smothering it with a hug. "He's so cute!" she said.
After a few minutes of Azure loving on the puppy, she stood up. "Is he a service dog?" she said.
"Yep." Black Star said, still holding the big bags of food and what not.
Azure stood and walked to her office, coming back with a little form. "Take this to Professor Stein when you get a chance, and write in the name and whatnot." She said. "And then he's your..." she thought, and then put a finger over her lips. "We're saying service dog." She said.
We walked down the hallway, finding my room number and then putting everything into it. I pushed open the door, Skye on the ground and sniffing around the doorframe, seemingly trying to get a sense of the room before he went in. When the door pushed open, he jolted in, tugging away the leash from my hand and bounded in, jumping on everything and rolling around.
Black Star laughed as he went to the kitchen and set the bag of dog food and other things down. He came back and took the bag from me, hanging it on the edge of one of the chairs.
I sat down on the ground in the middle of the living room, and Black Star joined me, his back up against the edge of the coffee table. I wondered just how much money Lord Death owned if he could afford to furnish student apartments like these? I chose not to ask and just be thankful.
Skye made his way over to Black Star and I, all of his energy gone, He had already eaten at the pet shop before we left, and it seemed that he was ready for sleep. He tumbled onto my lap and passed out instantly, his little fluffy belly going up and down.
Black Star smiled at him. "He's pretty cute." He said. His made a fist and a look over challenge came over his face. "I'll train him to be your guide—pet—service dog!" he said, laughing loudly. I smiled at him. I looked up at the wall, seeing a digital clock on it with the time. It was around seven thirty now, and I found myself wondering how I had lost track of time, again.
I pointed, and Black Star looked. "Oh. I should probably get home soon, or Tsubaki will be angry with me." He said. A momentary look of pure horror, maybe at the thought of sweet little Tsubaki mad, passed over him. He shook it away and grinned at me. "And also, (Y/n)," he said, and I looked up at him from Skye.
Black Star scratched his head, smiling a little. He tilted his head to the side, giving me a sweeter smile than his usual playful grin. "Think about what I said." He said.
There was something cold in me. Soul and I were already planning on going out, so was it wrong to go on a date with Black Star too? If they didn't know, wouldn't they be mad?
I shook my head a little, and the next moment, Black Star leaned in and gave me a little kiss on the forehead, his hand holding the top of my head. He pulled away from the sweet gesture, his fingers running through my (h/c) for a short moment. I looked into his green eyes, none of the awful feelings running through my body. Only a light blush into my cheeks.
"I'll see you tomorrow." He said, waving a little as he stood. I pulled a pen from my school bag (which had materialized in the living room?!) and grabbed Black Star's hand, writing something on it.
'Yes.'
He read the words, looking at me. "You'll go out with me?" he asked, his eyes lighting up. Pushing all ideas of the consequences that might follow from this decision, I nodded. He grinned, jumping a little in the air. "Okay—" he said, but I cut him off by holding a finger to my lips. "We'll keep it secret." He said, reading me. An evil smile came over his face. "Challenge accepted." He said, and then left.
I looked down at Skye in my arms, the little puppy sound asleep. After a few minutes during which I almost fell asleep, I took the puppy's collar off and lifted his up, taking the papers and the pen and walking to the door. I put my keys in my pocket, and pushed open the door, hearing it click behind me.
I walked down the halls quietly, hearing people in some of the other student dorms; laughing, talking, or studying very loudly. I smiled a little, liking the sound of everyone. As I reached the staircase, I was extra careful not to wake up the ((okay. okay. so I'm picturing the puppy a little smaller than the size of Storm, Joey G(the YouTuber with the name I forgot)'s puppy thanks)) sized puppy as I descended the stairs. It seemed everyone was out getting dinner, or already in their dorms or at their homes, so I met no one in the halls and I was okay with that.
I walked quietly until I found the infirmary. I nocked a little on the door, and heard a muffled "come in" from a voice that sounded like Professor Stein. I puled open the door with one hand, holding Skye, the papers, and my pen in the other, cradling Skye like a baby, and walked in.
"Ah, (Y/n)." Stein said, not looking up from a stack of papers as he sat at the foot of Mari's bed. I noticed that she was still sitting in the bed, looking out the window. She had a pair of ear buds in her ears, and I heard the faint sound of music coming from it. Skye yawned, and Stein looked up at the sound. At first when he saw the puppy, his eyes melted, and then his stony expression was back.
"A dog?" he asked, and I nodded. I went up to him and handed him the papers\ that Azure had given me. He looked them over, writing a few things on them, and then handing them back to me. "A service dog. A good idea. I should've suggested it." He said. He handed the paper back to me, and I put it in my back pocket. Stein pulled something from an inner pocket and held it out to me. "Before I forget, here's a card for you. Lord Death asked me to give it to you. It's a kind of credit card for you to buy clothes, food, what have you. Student sin the same situation as you are given cards such as these for a while." He said.
I looked at the card. It looked like a credit card, but with a Death symbol on it, and it was a shiny gold color. "Don't use it an over amount, like buying a house, or Death'll talk to you." Stein said, and I smiled and nodded, putting the card in my pocket as well.
I pointed to Mari, who was looking out the window and hadn't noticed me yet. Stein sighed. "I think that she may have caught something, so I'm keeping her here for a little while longer." He said. He shifted, and then leaned in and quietly said, "And I'm also keeping her here to make sure that she's okay. Apparently she was walking around the hallways today to move about, and Sid found her passed out on the floor."
I looked down, feeling guilty. Stein hit Mari's foot a little, and the blue-haired girl looked over at us. When she saw the puppy, her eyes lit up, and she pulled her headphones out.
"(Y/n). Let me hold him." She said, reaching out. Her voice seemed like she had a nasty cold, her chest sounding congested, and her breathing rasping a little. I was worried about her. I leaned forward and placed the medium-small ((I'll go back later and fix all the sizes later f u)) white dog into her arms. She made a little sigh as Skye opened his eyes, and looked up at her with his bright blue little orbs. She touched her nose to his, and he sighed contentedly. Mari kissed his nose and then looked up at Stein, who was looking at the dog without emotions.
"Oh please." Mari said, getting up on her knees and putting Skye into Stein's lap. "Hold the damn puppy." She said. Skye woke up fully, and with a little energy, placed his paws up on Stein's chest and wagged his tail.
Stein was silent, his cigarette burning, and pet the dog once. This seemed to make Skye happy and he laid down on Stein's lap, going to sleep. I smiled, and then yawned. "It's pretty early, but you seem tired, (Y/n)." Stein said, and Mari nodded. "Go back to your dorm and get some sleep."
Mari gave me a thumbs up, coughing a little as she spoke. "Maybe when I'm a little better I'll come and sleep in your spare bedroom." She said, her smile sweet. I nodded and gave her a hug, took Skye, and left the infirmary.
When I made it back to my dorm, after dropping off the papers with Azure and getting a little card that said Skye was a service dog, I was blinking the sleep away from my eyes, so I went to one of the two bedrooms, already with sheets and comforter on the bed, and flopped down.
Skye bounced around on the pillows a little as I took off my pants, throwing my keys on the bedside table. I crawled under the sheets, patting my chest to Skye. The dog came over and cuddled next to me, and I put my arms around him, like a teddy bear, and fell asleep with the thought of Soul and Black Star flitting around in my head.
