Chapter 11: Marks

I looked over at Maka and James, and the girl shrugged, my weapon looking confused as well. We knew that Mari was hot-tempered, but no one had ever done something like this to Stein, and hadn't she been sick for the past few days?

"Today we'll be learning about soul resonance, again, since all of you seemed to have forgotten it all since the last time that I taught it." Stein said. There were a few groans, and I saw Maka sigh and rest her head on her hands.

"This is the billionth time that we've had to do this because of some of the students not paying attention." She said. She looked over at me. "Wait... you must nt even know what we're talking about. Resonating with your weapon, or with your group. Since you're knew, I don't think that you and James will have a group, so Stein's probably going to make you just practice with James." She said.

I looked over at James, and he shrugged. "Everyone go outside and find some place to practice. I'll be making my way around the grounds to check on all of you to make sure that you're not screwing around. Just practice partners today." He said, standing and walking out of the door. After he passed over the threshold, the classroom exploded in conversation and feet moving as they went to the front door and the side door to find a place on the grounds to practice.

"What's up with Mari, do you think?" Kid asked as we started walking to the door.

"Salltyyy!" Black Star said.

"It seemed like she was really upset about something." Liz said. "I wondered what happened?" She caught Patti as her sister jumped from one of the ledges and slammed into Liz.

"Patti!" Tsubaki said as the two girls slammed into her, causing her to almost fall. Black Star caught the three girls before all of them could fall to the ground, busting out in laughter. I met Black Star's eyes, and he grinned, starting to laugh as Liz complained.

"We can ask her later." Soul said. I met his eyes, and he smiled a little, but we looked away before anyone could notice.

We were outside, and after finding spots, mine and James' in the woods, we started. Maka had explained how she and Soul resonated their souls. It sounded kind of confusing, but as she explained it a little more, I began to understand.

James and I stood across from each other, his body starting to glow as he transformed. I caught the hilt of the katana as he changes, swinging it and sending a splatter of light onto the surrounding trees. I closed my eyes like Maka had said, and started envisioning James in my mind while taking a breath in. When the images of him was burned onto the inside of my eyelids, letting the breath go.

I started visualizing my own soul and seeing James' in his weapon form with my eyes shut. I started pushing my soul as he did the same, and I almost heard a hum of something in the background. As the hum grew louder, I though that I could hear a voice, saying words that didn't make any sense. They were in English, but it was if they were a completely different language.

The voice seemed to be screaming, singing, speaking. 'What is that?' James thought, and I was surprised to find his voice in my head. I shrugged. 'That voice...' he said. So he heard it too. I heard the eerie sound of music begin to join the voice, and it sent a chill down my spine.

It was... beautiful?

I heard the word 'beautiful' repeat through the voice, its tone sounding pained, as if it was being torn apart.

"I think it's working... somehow." James said, his voice sounding drowned out by the music in my head. I felt a crack, and heard it too, the voice sounding hungry in James and my minds.

I opened my eyes, and saw the world washed in a pallet of red and black. My breathing stopped, the voice singing, screaming, 'why why where am I?'

I lifted James, seeing him. He was much bigger, and a black and red torrent surrounded him. There was the shape of hands, screaming faces, and a hand with clawed fingers holding his hilt.

It was my hand.

"(Y/n)..." James said, his voice tinny coming through his blade. "Your... your eyes." He said.

I saw the reflection of my eyes in the red and black steel of his blade. They weren't their usual (e/c)... they were red and slitted, black filling the whites of my eyes.

I opened my mouth to scream, the voice in my head letting out a pained sound even though nothing came from my lips, and I could see sharp teeth in the reflection of James' blade. In my mouth. That's when I realized that the voice in our heads... was me.

I dropped James and the connection snapped with a shock, the terrifying voice and music stopping in my head. I was blasted backward, and I hit a tree. I blacked out for a second, and when I woke up, my hand was burning. I looked down at the hand that had been holding James, and saw red burns racing across it. I gasped for air as I looked at it, the burns seeming to move in a strange way, like they were a living thing on my body, and growing hotter, and hotter, until they became the black color of burned coal.

The shape was on it was that of black lines, three of them, resembling gashes made from a wild animal. The edges looked red like burns, and I was convinced that hat they were from the uncomfortable hot sensation I had just undergone. I looked up as James moved to me, his face distraught and worried, sweat on his forehead.

"(Y/n)... what just happened?" he asked, his eyes looking terrified. In the reflection of his pupils, I saw that my eyes had returned to their (e/c) color. My teeth felt normal in my mouth, and my hands looked like normal fingers. "Here." James said, reaching down his hand to me.

I took it, feeling nothing negative like I usually did when someone touched me. Did something good actually come out of this experience? My legs went weak and fell back to the ground, my fingers slipping from James' hand to catch myself.

"You really aren't okay, are you?" he said. He bent next to me, his eyes flitting around as if he was trying to decide what to do.

We heard feet running through the forested area, enough to account for a group of people. "Hey!" a voice called, and I Maka's face through the trees.

All my friends were there a moment later, after a minute or so, Stein walked up as well. The older man looked around, surveying the situation that he knew had just happened. "Is everything okay?" he asked. "We sensed something strange and dark over here." He said.

He met my eyes and I suddenly knew that he knew what was going on. The reason Mari had been so upset, the knowing look in his eye; he knew exactly what was happening to me, and I didn't.

"Something odd happened when we harmonized our souls, and—" James began, but the Professor cut him off before he could say anything.

"Let's take (Y/n) back to the academy. You and her can tell me there." He said. But he already knew what was happening, I was sure of it.
