After class was over, we made out way to the balcony, a place that the other students knew was practically "our spot". When we got up there, we laid out our blankets and such and pulled out our lunches. I had a small bento box that Rin had made, identical to hers and Atsuki's.
She was now a teacher at the school, officially, and Atsuki was one of Death's Personal Death Scythes. The two had gotten married over the summer, and now the two of them were my legal guardians.
I heard footsteps and looked over to see a very tall, very pretty girl walking in out direction. She was wearing the classical Japanese uniform, something common at the school even though we were in Arizona, and she had long blonde hair, and bright blue eyes.
"Hello." She said, her voice sounding like she was a lot older than she probably was.
"Hello..." Maka said, and the girl smiled. It was like a Ray of sunlight had come out from behind the clouds and a goddess was gracing us with her beauty.
"Everyone else is boring." She said, holding her lunch in her hands, a small bento like mine. "But in class, all of you seemed pretty interesting. So I was wondering if I could hand with you."
We all nodded and she came and sat next to me. I couldn't shake the feeling that I knew her. It was like she looked like somebody that I had known. Her long, blonde hair shone in the sunlight and I couldn't help but ask, "Do I know you from somewhere? I mean before today." I said.
She looked at me as she unwrapped her bento. "No. I don't think so." She said, her voice sweet. I would've sworn that I had known her. She smiled at all of us again. "I almost forgot!" she said. "My name is Angelica." She said.
My stomach dropped and I stared at her as everyone began to introduce themselves. When it got to me, I looked up into the girl's eyes. "Angelica?" I asked.
Her delicate eyebrows raised a little and she looked into my eyes. "Yes..." she said. She smiled again and spoke. "And you must be (y/n). It's so nice to meet you." She said, crushing me with a hug.
My skin tingled a little as she drew away. How did I know this girl? I could've sworn that she... was it Angelica? No. It couldn't be. Angelica had been much older when she died. So how?
Could she be Angelica's daughter...? No. Angelica had never told me, and she wouldn't have been old enough to have a sixteen-year-old daughter.
I turned to Angelica, this was going to get confusing, and asked, "So how did you get your name?" I asked.
She looked at me, everyone else quieting down so they could hear. She smiled. "It was my mom's name." she said. No, it couldn't be. Angelica moved her hands a little as if trying to think. "I was an accidental child and my mother had me when she was quite young." She said.
We were all silent. This could not be happening. Angelica? A daughter? But she had never told me anything about it. I was going to have to ask Atsuki when I got home today, or, better yet, if I could find him now.
Angelica shuffled, maybe sensing my thoughts. "She put me up for adoption, and I got her meister blood. That's how I got to where I am now." She said, her smile not faltering once.
She reminded me so much of Angelica, if not only in the way that she spoke and carried herself. She looked over at me, smiling, and said, "Maybe we can be partners."
* * *
I left school early, not letting anyone notice me as I slipped out of school. I knew that Atsuki would already be home, getting to leave early because he wasn't a teacher anymore.
I stormed up the stairs of the house and into the kitchen. He was standing there, a book in his hand while he sipped a cup of what looked like coffee. I walked to him and jabbed a finger into his chest.
"Did Angelica have a kid?" I asked. His face looked startled. I jabbed him again. "Did she? One that she had when she was young that was a mistake?" I said, my volume rising with my anger.
Atsuki set his coffee down. I could tell that he was lying as he spoke. "What would make you think that? Angelica never had any children." He said.
I raised both of my eyebrows. "Then why is there an Angelica at school that said that she was named after her mother, Angelica." I said. "And that she had been a mistake when Angelica was young."
Atsuki looked as if he was trying to think of a way to avoid the question, but when he saw the rage in my eyes, he sighed. "You're not going to stop until I tell you, aren't you?" He asked. I was silent, staring at him. "Fine. Yes. All that Angelica said about Angelica was true." He said, rubbing his cheek and looking tired. "She had a daughter when she was fourteen, and put the girl up for adoption. The parents that adopted the girl named her Angelica after her mom.
"Angelica would arrange times and met with Angelica a few times, but it began to tear away at her foundations." He said, shaking his head a little. My head was starting to hurt a little.
"Why didn't angelica ever tell me?" I asked.
Atsuki laughed a little. "You wouldn't have understood. You were far too young." He said.
I huffed. "I wasn't." I said.
He sighed. "That's not the point." He said. He looked into my eyes, and then looked away. "She doesn't know that you killed Angelica. All she knows is that her birth mother died a few years ago in a terrible accident with a witch."
I laughed a little. "Well, that's what happened." I said.
Atsuki looked deep into my eyes. "The girl, Angelica... You probably can see it, but that girl is broken in ways you'll never know." He said. I looked into his eyes, waiting for an explanation. But then he straightened and lifted his coffee to his lips again. "Never mind."
I took a step back, looking at Atsuki. "You're not going to tell me?" I asked, becoming curious.
He shrugged, looking back to his book. "It's not my place." He said.
I turned, suddenly feeling quite angry. "Fine." I snapped. I walked to my room and flung my bag down. Was I jealous of Angelica for being the flesh and blood of someone that I had loved?
I flopped down onto my bed and closed my eyes, feeling tired. Angelica had said that she thought that we could be partners, and I had got the feeling that she was maybe the only one who would actually want to partner up with me. I could do just fine on my own, but a partner... I had never even thought about it.
I sighed and smashed my pillow into my face, screaming into it a moment. Everything was trying to cram into my brain all at once, my emotions conflicting and twisting together and making my brain hurt.
This day had taken a dark turn.
