~Your p.o.v~

It had been in the middle of winter when Angelica died… or when she was murdered. There had been snow everywhere and she had just graduated the academy with flying colors as a powerful meister. We had lived on the outskirts of Death City in a peaceful place that always got snow during winter. She had just turned seventeen, and I was nine. She had been raising me for a while, and I loved her with all my heart.

She had found me a little after someone had killed my dad and taken me in when I was about six. He had just taught me how to do a soul protect, but Angelica knew what I was because she was a powerful meister, already enrolled in the academy for a few years. Her parents were dead, but she had a rich aunt that practically bathed her in money.

We had lived together for about three years before she graduated. She had brought me out to the front of our house so we could watch the falling snow, and then she told me what she was going to have to do, and the memory was still fresh in my mind after six years…

Angelica held me on her lap, even though I was to old for it. I looked up at her with my nine year old face and smiled at her. She smiled too, but it seemed sad. She brushed some hair away from my face and kissed my forehead.

“____, I wanted to tell you something important. But first, we need to talk about you.” She said.

I nodded. “What is it, Angelica?” I said.

She lifted a cup of tea and took a sip from it, steam rising from the cup, looking like hot breaths. “I want you to promise me something. Even though you’re different, from all the other kids at school, from the teacher, and me, I want you to go to the DWMA, just like I did. You’re a weapon, I can sense it in your soul, and a powerful one, because of your mother.”

I turned to face her, my eyes full of wonderment. “I’m a weapon?” I pressed my hands into my face. “That’s so cool!”

She ruffled my hair. “You bet you are! And I think it’s because of your mom! Remember the story you told me about her?” she said and I nodded. “But now I want you to promise me that you’ll stay in Death City and graduate from the DWMA.”

I nodded and held out my hand, letting her take it. “I promise!”

She laughed a little. “But you’ll have to wait until you’re older. I think that you should go when you’re fifteen, maybe. Then you’ll have a good grasp on your power.”

I nodded, holding my hands up in fists. “I promise I’ll wait! And then I’ll become the most powerful weapon ever! Even more powerful then your partner, Atsuki-onee-chan!”

“I don’t know~” Angelica said, starting to tickle me. “Onee-chan is pretty powerful!”

I got away and looked at her, my cheeks pink. “Because she was trained by the best of the best!”

Angelica smiled and grabbed me, pulling me into a hug. “There’s one other thing, ____. Because I graduated the academy, they have to send me away to fight. There’s other places in the world that need my help.”

I pulled away from her, confusion running through me. “What…? But one-chan… Onee-chan has to stay with me!” I said, starting to cry. I grabbed her shirt, pulling at her. “You can’t leave me alone like mom and dad did! We were going to be together forever!”

Angelica hugged me. “I have to leave tomorrow, ____. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, but I didn’t know until now.”

I slapped her hands away. “You’re going to leave me, just like them! I hate you!” I cried and stood up, jumping off the deck and running into the cold snow, barefooted.

“____! Get back here now!” Angelica said, running off the deck to get me.

“I hate you! I thought you loved me! But you’re just like the rest of them!” I screamed my soul protect breaking. “Go away!”

“____! Put your soul protect back on and we can talk! Please!” She was right behind me and I spun around, falling backwards into the snow. Her face was scared, her hands shaking as they reached out toward me. “We can talk about it… please… don’t summon anything again… please.”

“You’re scared of me! You’re just like my dad! He was scared and left! Then one of them killed him! But I didn’t mean to! He left! So I summoned a dead thing and it killed him! And he was scared the whole time! He didn’t love me!” I screamed as Angelica reached her hands down, her soft hair falling into her eyes as her tears streamed. “He was scared of me! Just like you!”

“Please!” Angelica said, falling to her knees. “I don’t know what to do!” She held her hands to her face and cried. “Please stop, ____...”

“We can be together forever, Angelica…” I said, pressing my hands into the ground, my power sifting into it.

Angelica looked up as she felt the immense power. She looked around us as a dome of light began to form, holding us in it’s grasps. “Please… ____... stop…” She said, standing and pressing her hands into the barrier of light. “S-stop!”

“No…” I said. I looked down and saw something churning up the earth beneath me. I cried out and fell back as a skeletal hand reached out of the ground. “A-Angelica!” I said, scared.

“____! Make it go back into the ground before it comes out!” Angelica said.

“I don’t know how!” I said and started crying. I held my face and squeezed my eyes shut. “Make it go away Angelica!”

I heard silence, then ragged breathing. I opened my eyes and they widened as I saw something ugly and dead halfway out of the ground. It pulled the rest of it’s body out and turned to Angelica.

He eyes were wide with fear and she pressed herself against the wall of light. The dead thing took a few steps toward her and she cried out in fear. It raised it’s hand, then spoke in a rasping voice. “For… ____...” it said, bringing it’s hand down toward Angelica.

I screamed and reached forward, throwing my body towards Angelica, but it was too late. The things hand was in her stomach and blood was pouring from her. “____...?” she asked, her eyes becoming a little glassy.

“Get off her!” I screamed and the thing killing Angelica didn’t move. Then, it reached its other, decaying, hand up, and stabbed it into Angelica’s chest, tearing her apart.

“NO!!” I screamed and the thing clattered to the ground, it’s body sinking back into the ground. I caught Angelica and held her, leaning her against the wall of light that was slowly fading. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” I said, crying.

She coughed and blood splattered over me, filling my mouth. I coughed, her blood filling my lungs, an iron taste in my mouth. “Angelica! Angelica!” I sobbed as she tried to smile a little.

“That’s okay… ____... I love you and… I’m sorry… because… I was scared.” She said. Her eyes closed and the wall of light disappeared. Her limp body fell backwards onto the snow. Crimson began to spread and I started shaking.

I heard faint voices and someone lifted me away from Angelica’s body, whispering to me. I started pushing at them, trying to get away. I hit their face and Angelica’s blood smeared their cheek.

“At-atsuki…?” I asked, my tears blurring my vision.

The young man looked down at me, pain in his twenty year old eyes. “You killed her…” he said, no tears in his eyes. He pressed me into his chest. “It’s okay… ____... put your soul protect back on…” he said. He was the only other person that had known about me being a witch.

I didn’t move, not being able to breathe because of Angelica’s blood in my lugs. My eyes slowly closed and choked. “____... put on your soul protect, now.” Atsuki said, his voice hard, but it broke on the last word. “Do it.” He said. “She told me what to do if she ever died and I needed to take care of you… so please…” he said and my soul protect slipped on.

I started coughing and he fell to his knees, holding my small body in his arms. Blood splattered over him and my eyes closed slowly, my breath uneven as I fell unconscious…

I broke out of the memory, Angelica gone. Tears were streaming down my face as my body trembled. I fell to my side as my body stopped working. The wall of light surrounding Angelica’s grave and I, was gone in a flash of light and all that was left was steam.

My vision was blurry with tears and my body was limp. I saw a dark figure in black clothing walk to me and bend down to pick me up. The man’s arms lifted me up and pressed me into his chest.

“It’s okay, ____. I’m here. It’s okay.” Atsuki’s voice said. “Put your soul protect on and I’ll take you home.”

I nodded, my eyes closed, but tears still slipped out. “Take me home… please…” I said.

Atsuki waited as I tried to put my soul protect on, having trouble. He began to whisper, saying words to calm me down, just random things. “Sorry I didn’t come home last night… I should’ve but I had work… and Angelica’s aunt wanted to see me… but she gave me money to pay for the house. Don’t worry about working anymore, ____. Angelica wouldn’t have wanted you to. Let me take care of everything.” He said, his voice low and comforting.

My soul protect hid my witch soul and he hugged me. “It’s okay, ____. Atsuki is here. I’ll take care of you.” He said, wiping away my tears as I went limp in his arms.
