The next day, I was walking up the stairs of the DWMA, feeling very tired. Rin had woken me up that morning, and as far as I could tell, she didn’t think of me any different.

I sat down on the stairs, about halfway up. It was early, maybe six, and there was no one else on the stairs. It was way too early, but Atsuki had insisted that I get up early and take my time.

I nearly dozed off, catching myself before I could. I slapped my cheeks and stood up, swaying.

“____!” a woman’s voice said and I turned, seeing Rin.

“Rin?” I said, stepping down a few of the steps and she took the two at a time. When she reached me, I looked up at her, seeing that she was barely breathing heavily. “Why are you here?” I asked. “If you’re a mentor, you don’t have to be at school till eight…” I said.

She held up a little wrapped bento lunch. “You… you forgot your lunch, ____-chan.” She said.

“Oh!” I said, and took the lunch. “Thanks Rin!” I said, tucking it into my bag.

There was a moment of silence. She moved from foot to foot, still in her pajamas. “Just so you know, ____... I don’t think any different of you, after what Atsuki told me.” my face was blank for a moment. She laughed a little. “I knew you were awake, hon.” She said.

I moved forward and hugged her tightly. She was a little surprised, then hugged me back. “Thanks Rin…” I said.

She pulled away from me, smiling. “I’m going back to the house now.” She turned, jumping down a few steps. “I get to have some more sleep!”

“Not fair!” I said. She laughed as she ran down the stairs. I turned and began walking up the stairs again, in the quiet of the early morning for about ten minutes.

“Heeey!” a voice said from above me and I looked up. I saw a girl with auburn hair and grey eyes. “You want to walk together?” she asked.

I looked at her, my face blank for a moment, then her words sank in. “O-okay!” I said. I ran up the few stairs and stood next to the girl. “H-hi…” I said.

“Hey.” She said, her grey eyes changing color from blue to green, then back to grey.

I was captivated by them for a moment, then shook myself. “You… wanted to walk together?” I asked.

She nodded. “I usually go alone, to school. I’ve seen you a few times too, on the stairs. You seemed to always be alone.” She said, a little quietly.

I smiled. “What’s your name? Mine’s ____.” I said.

She beamed and held out her hand. “My name is Asuka.”

I took her hand, shivering at the feeling that filled my chest at her warmth. “Should we get to class?” I asked.

“Yeah.” She said, smiling. “Even though we have an hour…”

We started laughing.

~Soul’s p.o.v~

I saw ____ with that one girl, and I knew right off something wasn’t right… the girl was going to do something to take ____ away from me.

I sat down, at the bottom of the stairs. “Well this sucks.” I said. I closed my eyes, tired. I had woken up early enough to get here to maybe walk with ____, but nooo! The other girl just had to show up!

I punched the side of the stairs, a little shoot of pain going up my arm. “Damn it…” I said, shaking my fingers out. “This is going to go downhill from here, isn’t it?”

~Kid’s p.o.v~

I had gotten up early, hoping to maybe catch ____ and ask her how she was doing. But by the time I got to the stairs, there was just Soul there, ____ long gone up the stairs. I could sense her soul.

“Hey Soul.” I said casually, Liz and Patty behind me, Patty distracted by a flower.

Soul looked up from shaking out his hand and I stopped. “Hey Kid.” He said.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, crossing my arms.

He leaned back on the stairs, not really looking cool at all. “None of your business.” He said.

“You were waiting for ____, weren’t you?” I accused.

He jerked. “No! Just stay out of it!”

I could tell he was lying.

“Don’t even think about it Soul.” I said, starting up the stars.

“Yeah right.” Soul said, his eyes closed.

I ignored him.

~Black Star’s p.o.v~

This was so messed up! ____ was walking with that Asuka girl! ____ better not get close to her! We were meant to be!

I started grumbling, standing at the top of the stairs, perched on top of one of the big red spikes protruding from the school.

I saw what Asuka did to guys when she dated them! She just toyed with them and then left them! It was so cold what she did. If she was friends with ____, what sort of things would she pull? Or what it Asuka wanted ____ to-

My train of thought was cut off as someone behind me yelled.

“Black Star!” Sid said. “How many times am I going to tell you not to stand on these?!”

I quickly jumped off the spike and landed on the ground, running off. I hoped that Tsubaki would bring me breakfast!

~Your p.o.v~

Asuka and I walked up the stairs, getting up them with twenty minutes to get to class.

“Thanks for walking with me!” I said.

She smiled warmly at me. “Yeah. Thank you.”

There was a loud crack as someone landed behind us on the stones. My eyes widened as I saw Black Star. Asuka and I turned as we heard footsteps behind us from the stairs and suddenly we were surrounded by Kid and Soul as well.

“Why are you guys here?!” I said, confused. Asuka looked confused as well.

Black Star raised his hand, pointing a finger at Asuka. “Get away from ____! She’s mine!”

My mouth opened as I tried to speak. “Yours?!” Soul said. “What are you thinking! ____ likes me!”

“Wait-“ I blanched.

Kid laughed sarcastically. “You two are funny. She’ll choose me!  She loves me, just so you two know!”

“Uhm-“ I said, cut off as the three started yelling at each other.

Asuka wolf whistled and the three looked at her, my ears ringing. “Hey!” she said, sounding a little angry. “You guys are giving us headaches!” she said. She put a hand to her face. “____ will choose whoever she wants to ‘be with’!” she said.

The three were quiet for a moment, then they started yelling, pressing in on me. I felt my throat close as they pressed in on me and took a step back, tripping on one of the cobblestones that was uneven.

“Ah-“ I said as I fell.

Asuka’s hands flashed out and wrapped around me, catching me inches off the ground. Her hair had fallen around my face, one of her hands holding the small of my back, and the other around my waist. Her eyes were shut, and as they slowly opened, a blush began to form on my cheeks.

Her eyes had changes again, light blue with the faintest line of blue in them, grey speckled too. Her long, black eyelashes framed them and there was a tiny scar above her eyebrow.

“Th-thanks…” I said, feeling a few of her fingers on my skin.

She was blushing a little as she picked me up and set me on my feet. She didn’t meet my eyes, only grabbed my hand and began to walk.

“W-we should get to c-class…” she stammered, gently pulling me with her.

I was blushing and the boys were standing in the same places, in awkward positions, half stepping forward. They were speechless at the speed Asuka had shown, and as people started swarming up from the stairs, they disappeared.

I looked back at Asuka who was staring at the ground as we walked. Her cheeks were bright red, like mine, probably.

“S-sorry if I scared you…” she said. She stopped, only a few feet from the classroom. She looked up at me, her eyes the color they had been when she caught me. “Can… can I still get to know you… and be… friends…?” she asked.

I smiled. “Of course!”
