Chapter Nine

Sunoo smiled at Sunghoon. "It's okay. Now... I've been meaning to practice—or attempt—magic." He changed the subject and shifted his position to face Sunghoon. "Just like the spirits, there are different kinds of magic. Ice, fire, lightning, and void. But basic magic is all the same."

"Oh- sounds interesting." Sunghoon had never seen magic except the evil sorcery the witch used to control him. "Give it a try."

Sunoo reached into his bag and pulled out a quill. He set it on the rock and shut his eyes. "According to this spell book I found... I have to reach deep into my mind.. Think just hard enough to move it.."

Sunoo tried very hard to reach into his mind. But it was difficult with Sunghoon beside him. He came out here to be alone, and somewhere peaceful where he could concentrate. But with the king here, it was more difficult.

Come on come on come on... Please just levitate my little quill. Just move.. a little bit.

He peeked his eyes open every now and again to see if it's moved even a little.

Nothing.. nothing at all.

Sunoo crossed his arms and sighed, his anxiety gnawing at him again. "I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or.. or if I'm not gifted."

"Relax. You're too anxious. I can feel it radiating from you." Sunghoon took Sunoo's shoulder and turned him to face him. "You got this. I can leave, and let you concentrate. Okay?"

Sunoo looked down and sighed. He was sensitive right now and if he wanted to control magic, he needed to control his own emotions.

"Thank you, Sunghoon. But.. please stay and let me try one more time. If it doesn't work, then I will try again alone."

Sunghoon grinned. "Okay, go on."

Sunoo faced the quill again, and shut his eyes. Focusing intently.

Many minutes passed by, and the quill didn't move at all. He kept peeking to see, but nothing. It felt like an eternity.

Just when Sunoo was about to give up, he peeked his eyes open and saw the quill levitate. He gasped and the quill immediately dropped. Sunoo jumped up and squealed. "Oh my God! I did it!"

Sunghoon looked from the quill to Sunoo. "R- really?" He stood up and Sunoo immediately hugged him.

Sunghoon was surprised by the hug, but he returned it. "Good job.."

"Thank you!! I can't believe it! I can use magic, Sunghoon! I can help kill the disease. I can do something. I've always dreamed of this!" He pulled away and smiled at the king. His eyes filled with joy. "I wanna try something else now!"

"Maybe you should practice small for now." Sunghoon laughed awkwardly.

"You're right.. Ah, but I'm just so excited!" He got back down on his knees and adjusted the quill. "I can't wait to tell Yumi. She will be excited too."

Sunghoon hummed and remained standing, watching Sunoo prepare to attempt magic again.

"This time, I need to levitate it for longer." Said Sunoo as she shut his eyes tightly again.

Levitate.. come on..

Sunoo focused hard, he was determined to do it again. He was hopeful and he truly believes he could. But nothing was happening. Even after so many minutes.

Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, Sunoo gave up. "I don't understand!" He felt a lump form in his throat. This was frustrating him more than he wanted it to.

Sunghoon noticed the crack in his voice, and got on his knees beside him. "Hey, maybe if you cry... You will feel better, and you can focus more. You're way too anxious and it's messing things up."

Sunghoon's words made Sunoo immediately start to cry. "I just..." Sunoo leaned forward and hugged him again. Burying his face in his shoulder. He was a clingy person and he didn't think anything weird about it. "This disease.. it needs magic to stop, I truly believe it does. But I can't stop it if I can't use magic."

"Maybe you can't... But someone else can. It's not the end of the world." He was a bit stiff, but then he wrapped his arms around Sunoo too.

"But... I've dreamed of using magic for so long." He sniffled.

"But you have your own talents and abilities. You can turn into a cute fox. And you're smart. I could never be as amazing as you."

"Yeah but what good does being a cute fox do?" Sunoo pulled away and looked at Sunghoon. "Wait a minute.. it did float. I just need practice. That's all."

Sunghoon frowned. "Sunoo... You can practice but... Maybe You didn't make it levitate."

"What do you mean?" He asked with a serious tone.

"I think... I think I did it." Sunghoon spoke hesitantly. He was afraid to upset him.

"What?!" Sunoo stood up quickly, covering his mouth. "Were you trying to levitate it while I was trying??"

"Yes.. because it was taking a while and I was curious.." Sunghoon remained seated.

"But... I thought for sure I did it." Sunoo felt a pang of jealousy. "Please try again."

Sunghoon stood up and grabbed Sunoo's hands, and held them palm up. Then he took the quill and placed it on Sunoo's palms. He watched closely as Sunghoon's eyes shut.

And then—a few seconds later—the quill started to float.

Sunoo's jaw dropped. He was relieved that someone could use magic to stop the disease. But he still felt jealous. But he pushed that aside for now.

"I- I can't believe it.." he murmured.

Sunghoon's eyes opened and the quill remained in the air. He looked into Sunoo's eyes. The gaze was so intense, it made Sunoo blush.

His eyes didn't leave Sunoo's as he reached for the floating quill. Once his hand touched it, it turned into ice.

Ice magic....

Sunghoon shut his eyes and let out a long sigh. Using the small amount of magic was tiring. It was necessary he gets more practice so he can use it more naturally.
