Chapter 6
When the young girl opened her eyes and looked around she saw the shining rocks and smiled. She always loved watching the stars or anything that resembled stars. Kari stood up, brushed the dirt off of her, packed up her things, and went on her way towards the Hotlands. She kept thinking about the Delta Rune as she neared the Hotlands. Kari made a quick stop to pack up the hoodie Sans gave her then had a quick snack and continued forward.
Once Kari had been in the Hotlands for ten minutes she began sweating nonstop and she felt her energy drain from her with each step. She took about five breaks for every half mile, which would usually only be two breaks. After about three miles of walking Kari came across Sans, who was asleep at a wooden stall which had snow on the roof. Kari stared at the snow in confusion, wondering why it was there in such a hot place, but shook off the thought then went onwards. She did not want to disturb the sleeping skeleton so she let him be. Kari grumbled as she walked onwards, soon seeing a water cooler filled with water. Kari gasped and quickly took a foam cup and filled it with water. She got another, than another, pretty soon she had her fill with a total of thirty-three cups. Kari wiped her mouth then decided to take a cup full of water just incase she needed another drink, but when she was no longer near the water the water in the cup evaporated. The cup evaporated too, which made the child confused but she pressed on and was soon near two guards, both in black armor and holding swords. They were standing in front of the path to the left of where Kari came in. She got a bad feeling about them so she avoided the knights and went into the building just ahead of her. The door was unlocked so she thought it would be okay.
"Hello?" She called out with a gulp. "Uh, a-anyone here?" Kari walked forward and noticed out of the corner of her left eye that there was a giant screen. Kari looked at it then noticed that she was on the screen. She just stared in shock. Was this a mirror or something? "...Hmmm." Kari sat Chase by her feet then began to fix her ponytail, making sure it was to her liking. Once she was done with that Kari gulped then shook a strange feeling off and began to look for a switch to turn the lights on, since it was a little too dark for her liking. She felt around the walls for anything that felt like a switch. "Uh... Uhm... Ah!" She found a switch then flipped in on. The lights turned on with a flash and illuminated the room. "ACK!" Kari covered her eyes due to the sudden brightness, her eyes just needed to adjust. Once Kari reopened her eyes she looked around to see trash all in one area, an old desktop computer to the right of the trash, notes scattered all over the floor, and a figurine. There were two escalators, one going up the other down, on either side of the room and what appeared to be a restroom to the left of the up escalator. Kari went towards the restroom and noticed two yellow scaled feet at the bottom. "Hello?"
"Ah!" A voice stammered from the other side of the door. Kari frowned.
"I'm not gonna hurt you. I promise." Kari said sweetly. The door slowly opened to reveal a yellow reptilian face with glasses. Kari smiled happily. "Hi." She greeted with a small childish giggle, holding Chase close to her chest. "I'm Kari Himura. This is Chase." The creature stepped out of the restroom and stood across from Kari timidly.
"I-I'm Dr. Alphys, I'm king Asgore's royal scientist. B-bu-but you can call me Alphys if you'd like. Hi..." Alphys's voice was soft as she spoke. She wore a pure white lab coat and was a bit taller than Kari. Kari made sure not to make Alphys uncomfortable since it was clear she was shy.
"That's a nice name miss." Kari smiled. Alphys blushed a little bit at the compliment.
"O-oh. U-uh thank you." She said slightly flustered. Kari stepped out of Alphys way so she could walk past the child. "Y-you must be wondering about the monitor, huh?" Alphys asked while walking towards the monitor she was talking about.
"A little bit, yeh." Kari said childishly while holding Chase close and looking up at Alphys.
"Well, uh... I, uh..." Alphys sighed and looked at Kari. "I've been spying on y-you." Kari stared with wide eyes as Alphys continued. "Y-you see, ev-ever since you fell down here in the Ruins I've been watching you on this monitor. I was supposed to be researching you to see how Determination works... But, uh, I kinda got wrapped up in your adventure that I... Forgot my project... It's just when I see something on a screen, it makes me root for the underdog, ya know?" Kari shook her head.
"Nuh-uh." She said innocently and Alphys frowned. "I'm guessing it's a good thing."
"W-well, y-yes..." Alphys replied and Kari jumped for joy. Alphys chuckled nervously then walked to her desk with the scattered papers, Kari close behind. The reptilian scientist rustled through the papers and skimmed over the words while mumbling. Kari just sat on the floor and played with Chase for a while since she had nothing better to do. About an hour passed and Alphys found what she was looking for then tucked it away for later. "S-say, uh, listen... I b-built this robot to en-entertain others, like a movie star... B-Bu-But recent events made me add a few m-more practical features..."
"Uuuhhhh..." Kari looked at Alphys in confusion, she did not know all of the words the reptilian scientist used. "What now?"
"Uh... Um... Well you see I, oh how do I put it in a way you can understand..." Alphys hummed in thought. "Oh, uh, m-my robot was once nice but I had to change him to be mean. Now he wants to hurt you. I tried to change him back but I only made it worse." Kari just stared at Alphys and nodded.
"Oh... That's not good." Kari frowned sadly. Everything soon began to shake as if a giant was approaching.
"Uh oh." Alphys gulped with wide eyes. Soon part of the wall broke down and all the lights went off and it was pitch black.
"Oh yes!" a spot light revealed a large, grey, rectangular robot with a grid of lights at the top, which changed colors. The robot had four dials along the bottom of his body, and from the bottom the robot had a single leg which ended in a wheel. The robot also had two segmented robotic arms, which ended in white gloves. Kari stared at the robot as confetti dropped from the ceiling. "Welcome, Beauties to today's quiz show!" A crowd cheers from a recording. Kari just tilted her head in confusion, holding Chase close. "Oh boy! I can tell that this is gonna be a great show!" The crowd cheered again.
"Hi!" Kari smiled kindly. "I'm Kari Himura and this is Chase."
"The name's Mettaton, Darling. I do hope you love quizzes, because you are our newest contestant!" Mettaton clapped his hands and a recorded applause echoed through the room.
"Uh..." Kari mumbled as she got a little worried. Her legs began to tremble slightly and she held her plush tighter.
"Don't worry Kari, darling, just answer everything correctly and you get to live. Answer something wrong and, well, just hope you don't. Now, let the show begin!" Alphys gulped and stood next to Mettaton while four black rectangular holograms came from the robot, each with a letter from A-D. "Now when you choose an answer just point to one of the boxes, mm-kay?" Kari nodded in response. "Now let's start off easy. Question 1," As Mettaton spoke white text appeared above the four answer choices. "What's the prize for answering correctly? A. Money. B. Mercy. C. A new car. Or D. More questions." Alphys got Kari's attention then made the letter "D" with her hands. Kari hovered her right hand over the letter "D" and spoke.
"This one." She called and the answer choice turned green while the rest turned red.
"Correct! The quiz show continues. Now, question 2! What is the king's full name? A. Lord Fluffybuns. B. Fuzzy Pushover. C. Asgore Dreemurr. Or D. Dr. Friendship." Just like last time Alphys gave Kari the answer, this time it was C.
"That one." The quiz show went on and Alphys gave Kari the correct answer each time. Until the last one.
"Who does Dr. Alphys have a crush on? A. Undyne. B. Asgore. C. The human. Or D. Don't know."
"Oh no..." Alphys murmured as she got a little flustered. Kari blinked and then hummed in thought. She was not exactly sure who so she decided to guess.
"A!" She called out and Alphys began to blush.
"See Alphys? Even the tiny human knows." Mettaton said. Kari frowned.
"Not tiny..." She mumbled under her breath and no one heard. Alphys got flustered and covered her face.
"Well, now the show has no dramatic tension, does it?" Mettaton said with a robotic sigh. "But no worries! Because this was just the pilot episode! Tune in next time to see more drama! More romance! More bloodshed!" Kari winced at the last thing Mettaton said. "Until next time darlings!" With that said Mettaton pulled his arms and leg into himself and flew off like a rocket ship. Alphys and Kari just stared up at the new hole in the ceiling then looked at each other.
"W-well... that was... something." Alphys spoke and Kari nodded. Kari began to leave since there was nothing else to do, but Alphys stopped her. "Hey wait a second. Let me give you m-my ph-phone number. That way I can help you out a little bit." The scientist smiled and Kari took out her cell phone.
"Sure!" Kari giggled. Alphys stared at the child's phone.
"Wh-where'd you get that phone? It's ancient! You can't text or anything with it. Hold on. I'll be right back." Alphys went and worked on Kari's phone for a while then rushed back. "There you go. I upgraded it for you. Now you can text, take pictures, and can just do much more than before. It even has a keychain now. I also added my number and signed you up for the underground's number one social network and put you as my friend." Alphys smiled and handed Kari her improved cell phone. Something about the improvements were familiar to the child. Her head began to throb and her gaze got distant. She then fell over and collapsed. "Kari? KARI?! Oh no, oh no." Alphys began to freak out.
----------
Hey honey, look!
What is it dear?
dae!
Daw, there's my little girl. Oh, remember how I got promoted yesterday?
Yes, I remember.
Pwo-pwo?
I'll tell you later. Anyway, look. My job gave me a new phone and they even said they'd get the whole family a new phone. I told them to wait on getting Kari one since she's so young.
I wuunnn... teww... teehww!!
And you need to be older to get one.
... aw...
Kari, mommy and daddy need to talk. Please go upstairs and play for a while. D i n n e r w i l l b e r e a d y s o o n.
----------
Kari opened her eyes with a groan then looked around. She was on a twin sized bed and in a room that had a bunch of posters, bookshelves on the other side of the room, a wardrobe, a machine with pink goop in it, and a lot of blueprints and tools on a dusty table. Kari sat up while holding her head with her right hand and holding Chase close to her with her left arm.
"O-Oh thank god you're okay. You ARE okay right?" Alphys asked when she rode up the escalator and saw that Kari was awake. Alphys rode on the moving part of the floor while walking so she could get to Kari quicker.
"Yeh, I'm okay." Kari said in a tired tone. Alphys nodded then went down stairs.
"I'll be right back." About ten minutes later Alphys was back upstairs with a steaming bowl of instant noodles. "H-here. You probably just got really hungry and passed out. I haven't seen you eat much while on your journey." Kari nodded and took the food then began to eat. It was true, Kari did not eat much because she did not get hungry very much, but now that she was on a journey she needed more food to sustain herself.
Hours went by and Kari was on her own again with more food and water in her bag. Alphys was hesitant on letting Kari leave, but she seemed fine after a while of rest so the reptilian scientist saw no harm in letting Kari continue her soon-to-be-over adventure. Not too long after she left the lab, Kari's phone began to go crazy. It was because Alphys kept posting on that social network she signed the child up for. Kari just put the phone on silent and only looked at her phone when she sat down to take a break.
"Mew... Mew... Kissy... Cutie?" Kari asked herself while she read through the alerts. "Huh? Well, okay..." Kari shrugs it off since she did not know what Alphys was talking about. A few hours later Kari was curled up under an empty wooden stall and sleeping soundly.
Power! Gimme, gimme, gimme!!!
No way! Stop it now!
MINE, MINE, MINE!! ALL MINE!!
Hold back now!
