Chapter 36

Lapis's POV:

Peridot left for an errand a little more than an hour ago, and I couldn't stop thinking about it. The last time Peridot didn't tell me where she was, she had bruises because she had been with Jasper. I just couldn't help but worry about Peridot, but I remained laying in her bed. I stared up at the ceiling, trying to fall back asleep, but it was quite difficult. I nearly jumped out of the bed as soon as I heard the key jiggling into the doorknob. I yawned and rested my hands behind my head, keeping my eyes glued to the door. It slowly opened, and in peeked Peridot's head.

She had a nervous grin on her face, and I arched an eyebrow. "Hey, Peri. How was your errand?" I asked. "It was good. Good. Uh-uhm, Lapis, I have something to show you..." she muttered in reply, stepping into the room. She had her large backpack slung over both of her shoulders as she walked in. I slightly sat up, and tilted my head, a bit confused. "What is it?" I asked, eyeing the backpack Peridot gently set down on the bed. I swore I saw the backpack move on its own, but I may have just been seeing things.

"Uh...you alright?" I looked up at Peridot, and she looked a bit nervous. "I-I uhm...got something for us...w-well more so for you to ya know...help you get y-your mind off things whenever you're overwhelmed or anything...a-and just s-something to, well...make us both happier." Peridot stuttered, and her cheeks were tinted pink. She then placed her fingers on the zipper of her backpack and slowly unzipped it. I leaned forward a little to get a better view. Peridot then reached in, and pulled out a.....A PUPPY?! A PUPPY?! A PUPPYYYYY!! AYDGJSGFBDFVHDFGFVB-

Peridot's POV:

I hesitantly held the puppy out to Lapis, keeping a painful grin on my face. Please like it please like it please like it. The puppy squeaked, and wriggled in my hands. Lapis's eyes were as wide as saucers, and her hands were clamped over her mouth. Is that a good or bad reaction?! I nearly dropped the puppy when Lapis squealed in an inhumanly high-pitch. Lapis quickly reached over and took the puppy from my hands, and hugged it tightly. I sighed in relief, and half-smiled.

Lapis was wearing the biggest grin I'd ever seen, and she held the puppy in front of her. Lapis's nose was nearly touching the puppy's, and the puppy's tail began to wag. "Hi babbyyyyy...you're so cute! Who's a good girl?! You are! You are!" the bluenette cooed in a squeaky voice, and the puppy looked just as excited to see her. The small dog barked, licking Lapis's nose, and Lapis giggled. Wow...I don't think I've ever seen her this thrilled about anything before..."Peridot I can't believe you did this! Thank you so much you are adorable!" Lapis squealed, looking at me with pure happiness in her eyes.

"Hehe, oh, i-it was nothing r-really...I just...love to see you smile and I was hoping that maybe you'd do it more often with this little thing around..." I muttered, feeling my face heat up. Lapis stared at me for a moment with a big smile on her face. She kissed my cheek gently and giggled, and I blushed harder. "You're too good to me..." she said, now giving me a softer smile. The bluenette softly pet the puppy's head, and the small animal rested in Lapis's lap. "What's her name?" she asked, looking down at the puppy.

"Well, she doesn't exactly have a name yet. I was actually gonna let you do the honors..." I said, scratching the back of my neck. Lapis raised both of her eyebrows at me. "Really?" she asked excitedly. "Yup." Lapis then looked back down at the small puppy. "Hmmm...she reminds me of a gingerbread....or a pumpkin." the bluenette muttered. "I think both are pretty good names..." I added, giggling. "...I think Pumpkin is a cute name..." she said, her cheeks a bit pink. "I love it." I said, staring at her.

"S-so you bought stuff for her right?" Lapis asked. "Noooo, I just got the puppy. I was hoping that she'd just be potty-trained on the toilet and just eat all of our food." I said with a tone full of sarcasm. Lapis rolled her eyes and laughed. "The stuff's in the car..." I said, laughing with her.

. . . .

"Peridot I really don't think this is a good idea..." Lapis muttered nervously as we walked down the halls of the Beach City Hospital. "Lapis, just calm down. It'll be fine. We're just gonna visit Jasper again now that he's awake. I doubt he's gonna jump out of his bed and start strangling us both." I said, rolling my eyes. "What if he does though..." Lapis mumbled barely above a whisper. We should've brought Pumpkin. Lapis would probably be much calmer. I lightly knocked on the door to the room Jasper was in, and waited.

Lapis's fingers were fidgeting, and I put a hand on her shoulder. She side-glanced me, and I stood up on my tip-toes, kissing her head. The door then opened, and there stood Squari. "Hey guys..." she whispered, and I nodded in response. Lapis muttered a timid 'hey' in response, and we both walked in. I hid my hesitation as best as I could, so Lapis would feel more confident in fully entering the room. As I fully walked into the room, I saw my brother laying lazily in the bed.

"H-hey, Jasper..." I squeaked, trying my hardest to not look away from him. "Hey, sis..." he replied in a raspy voice. He doesn't sound angry. "H-how ya feeling?" I asked. Jasper looked down at the foot of his bed, and shrugged. "Eh...could be better..." he muttered. I shoved my hands into my pockets and quickly looked down. "Um...your face isn't...as pale anymore..." I said. "Really? Well...that's good I guess." Jas replied, placing his hand on his cheek. "Yeah...u-uhm...look I'm really sorry about...wh-what happened back at my dorm room, Jasper I-" "Don't. Don't apologize. I...was acting like a kid with anger issues back there. I shouldn't have just barged in there and...hurt Lapis...and you. Sorry, man." he explained in a sad tone of voice.

"D-don't worry about it...wh-what I'm more worried about is how...this happened. Why...did you do it, Jasper?" I asked timidly. Jasper was silent for a long time, and he refused to look at me. "I don't know, Peridot. I felt like I had no purpose here...all I did was mess up. All I do is make people scared, or angry. My friends aren't real friends man...they're only on my side because they're afraid of what I'll do if they weren't..." Jasper explained, his voice cracking a bit.

"I've hurt everyone I care about...I've hurt my sisters...I've hurt my first love the most...I-I...don't know how to live with myself anymore, Peridot. I wish I could take back the things I've done...b-but I can't. And all I can do is just...pay for them." Dead silence filled the room, and it was eating me alive. Jasper didn't seem to notice Lapis, since she was still halfway in the door. I gave Jasper a sad look, and I bit the inside of my cheek. "Jasper...I-I brought someone here to see you..." I muttered, and Jasper raised an eyebrow. I looked over at a nervous Lapis, and signaled for her to fully enter the room. She looked uneasy...scared even.

I nodded my head, giving her a reassuring smile. after about 10 more seconds, the bluenette finally -HESITANTLY- stepped fully into the room, slowly closing the door behind her. She took a few sluggish steps until she reached me - in Jasper's view. "Oh...h-hi..." my brother murmured, looking a bit surprised. "H-hey..." Lapis muttered back, looking down at the floor. The tension between them was unbearable, and I didn't know how much longer I could be this room. Squari looked like she was thinking the exact same thing.

"Lapis...I-I'm sorry for what I did back at your guys' dorm...b-but you gotta understand why I did it." Jasper said in a sad tone. Lapis remained silent, urging him to go on. "Ever since we broke up...I knew you were out to get me. I just knew you were going to tell people - lots of people about what I've done. And everyone would see me as the bad guy...never talk to that guy...never date that guy...he's a psycho. I knew the first thing you were gonna do is tell people about us...and I was always afraid." Jasper explained in a cracky voice.

We were all silent again, and I looked down to the floor, feeling extremely unsettled. "But I didn't." Lapis suddenly stated, and I looked back up at her. "Wh...what?" Jasper squeaked. "I didn't. I never told anyone...I let you keep your giant fragile ego. I stayed silent about it, Jasper. Peridot's the only one I've ever actually told about us." Lapis explained, looking up at Jasper with furrowed eyebrows. "I-I see...b-but...out of all people...why my sister?" Jas asked. "Jasper...this was explained before you nearly tried to kill me again last month. I had no idea that Peridot was your sister when I first met her." Lapis told him in a cold voice.

She sounded...mad. "I'm sorry...but when I first found out that Peridot now knew about this...I was afraid she was gonna hate me. Think I'm the bad guy!" Jasper justified. "Because you are! You realize the shit you've done to her?!" I blurted angrily. "Oh, so you do?! Well has Lapis told you the things that she's done to me? The reasons I even ever did those things?!" Jasper protested. I growled and took a step forward. "You don't have an excuse. Quit thinking I'm just gonna keep falling for your bullshit!" I shouted, feeling my head pulse. I then felt Lapis softly place a hand on my shoulder, and I cocked my head to look at her.

My expression softened as soon as I saw Lapis's look of...shame on her face. "No...I didn't tell her. That was...a mistake on my part." she muttered. "L-Lapis? Wh-what are you talking about?" I asked, now confused. What?! What did Lapis do to Jasper?! "I'm sorry...I was terrible to you." Laz mumbled. "Before I pushed you down that staircase...you threatened me first. You called me names...you verbally abused me. You messed with my head! You played mind games, Lapis! If I'm crazy...then you're insane!" Jasper growled.

"I said I was sorry, Jasper! I don't know what else to say! I was in a bad place. You physically hurting me drove me insane! You're the reason I was the way that I was!" Lapis growled back. "That's not true! You were the reason I was the way that I was!" Jasper argued. Squari and I both looked at each other with extremely nervous expressions. I took a step back, and so did my sister. Jasper then sat up more, sneering at Lapis. "God dammit I knew coming here was a bad idea!" Lapis shouted, tangling her fingers into her hair.

"Damn right it was! Did you just come here to tell me how wrong I was?!" Jasper asked, sounding more angry than ever. "Peridot dragged me here, Jasper. But we did come here to check up on you. I didn't want this shit to happen! This is what I was afraid of!" Lapis yelled. "Oh please, you're afraid of everything at this point." Jasper shot back, crossing his arms. "And whose fault is that?!" Lapis argued, sounding more hurt this time. It was silent, and Jasper and Lapis stayed glaring at each other.

Squari and I were literally standing at the door at this point, ready to get the hell out of there. Jasper then began to climb out of bed, and I knew that I had to stay in there. I took a step forward, and I heard Squari gasp. "J-Jasper y-you can't g-get out of b-bed!" Squari stuttered, sounding nervous. However, Jasper ignored her, and stood up right in front of Lapis. Lapis looked up at Jasper, her fists balled, but shaking. She's trying not to let him see her fear. She's trying to be strong. I gotta help her somehow.

"J-Jasper please..." I whimpered, taking another step forward. My brother looked Lazuli straight in the eye, his eyebrows furrowed deeply. "Jasper...?" Squari whimpered, not moving from her spot. There was silence, and no response from our brother. Oh god maybe Lapis was right. Maybe this was a bad idea. "Malachite would be one year and three months right now, Jasper." Lapis suddenly said, her voice shaky. My heart broke a little at that statement, and I looked over at Squari. Squari just looked confused about this whole thing. I forgot that Jasper had never told Squari about him and Lapis, so she must have been baffled by all of this.

Jasper continued staring Lapis in the eyes with the same angry look, but I spotted his bottom lip slightly quivering. "We could've raised that baby together, Jasper...you would've been a father. I would've been a mother. We could've...had a life together. But you just shredded that...and threw it into the fire like it was nothing." Lapis said in a very upset voice that I don't think I've ever heard before. Jasper's eyes were glossy at this point, and he looked like he was about to break down crying. I had no idea Lapis was crying until I heard her sniffle, and I had no idea what to do.

"I know I made mistakes, Jasper...but you screwed up too. I loved you so much...even still when you hurt me." Lapis mumbled, still straight ahead at Jasper. "Do you really think I didn't love you, Lapis? You meant the world to me. You just always frustrated me and...I couldn't control it. You messed with me. It felt like you didn't love me. I...was just as excited about this baby as you...if not more." Jasper explained, no longer being able to look at the bluenette. Lapis huffed, looking away and wearing a frustrated look on her face.

Tears still spilled down her cheeks, but her face was angry. I looked down at Lapis's stomach, thinking about how there used to be a baby in there. I felt a lump form in my throat, and it was getting harder and harder to stay in this room. Jasper then raised his arms and took a step towards Lapis. "NO!" I cried as I was afraid that he was about to hit Lapis. However, I froze in place and my eyebrows shot up as soon as I saw what he did next.

His big muscular arms wrapped around Lapis tightly, and Lapis looked just as shocked as I was. Her arms remained at her sides, but Jasper buried his face into Lazuli's blue hair, and more tears ran down his face. Squari's mouth was dangling open, and her eyes were wide open. She looked so utterly confused, I thought she was gonna yell 'what the fuck' at any second. Lapis's shaky arms then finally raised up, and rested on my brother's lower back.

Her face was now buried into his chest, and I just stared in awe. What...the fuck...just happened. I felt something burn in my chest as I watched them hug, and I quickly looked away. The lump in my throat grew much larger, and I inhaled sharply through my nose. I clenched my fists so tightly it felt like my knuckles were about to break. "L-Lapis. I think visiting hour is about to end. We better get going." I said, trying not to hiss through my teeth.
