Chapter 28

Third person pov

Fuyumi knew they had more than enough room at the Todoroki estate for all the homeless children Takashi was currently housing. The idea of kids so young out and alone on the streets made her feel sick to her stomach. She wanted more than anything to invite them in, but knew it wasn't likely to happen. With her father around, she wasn't sure it would be a good thing anyway. Even if he did appear to be... happier, and apologetic. Just looking back on how he'd dealt with them when they were children was enough to dissuade her from the idea.

"You could try asking him." Hawks supposed. "You said he's been in better spirits lately, right? You could close off a part of the house for them temporarily until you can find them loving families."

"But then someone would have to stay with them, and I know how badly you want me to move out. I want to move out too." Fuyumi said, feeling disheartened. She loved the idea of bringing the children in, and she knew her soulmate could tell as much. It was just a shame she couldn't. She yearned to help-- especially after all Takashi had done for her. She just...

"Fuyumi, I just want to be with you. I want us to be together! And if you can get your dad to agree, that can be here." Hawks waved a hand about. They were in the main living room. She knew Hawks wasn't all that into the traditional Japanese look, but the fact that he was willing to try meant a lot. She gave a weak smile. There's no way her father would agree to house Hawks. Especially not after their little scuffle. Hawks being here was risky as it was, but she had it under good authority that he'd be gone most of the day. That good authority being Natsuo having overheard him saying he was taking the day off to attend to something while the white-haired young man was trying to shower, but Fuyumi would take the information either way.

Her dad had been an enigma as of late. He had his ups and downs, but she was still afraid in the end. He seemed almost like a different person at times. Fuyumi... wasn't sure how to deal with that. It's not as though she'd really seen him lately. Apparently, he was taking off a lot of work for some unknown reason, and he appeared... happier. Not monumentally, but he was smiling. That was something considering the fact that Fuyumi quite literally never saw him do that. Like, ever. Not without any sort of cockiness behind it, that is.

"I don't know. I... I've always wanted my family to be just that-- a family. I... I know that'll never happen. Not with how my dad is, and not with all that's going on with Shoto." Fuyumi shook her head. Would it be pathetic to admit she felt like crying? Sometimes the frustration was just too much. "I just wish-"

She was cut off by the sound of the front door opening. She immediately tensed, and so did Hawks. They shared a wide eyed look, neither moving or really knowing how to react. Natsuo was in class and would've texted were he going to swing by. There was no way it was Shoto, and that was pretty much everyone on the short list of people that could gain access to the home. There was a gate that required a code to get into the property, and a fair amount of security that her father could observe from his phone. Hawks only got in because he had the advantage of flight.

"You did say your father was going to be out all day, right?" Hawks asked in a hushed tone, still not moving from his place.

"The information wasn't the most reliable." Fuyumi admitted as footsteps too light to be her father's trotted into the home.

"This place gets bigger and bigger every time I'm here." Hoshi insisted as he darted from the front door and into the living room area  where he and Enji had played Just Dance the last time he was here. He'd only been to Enji's house a few times, but it felt more and more spacious every time he saw it. It was too big for the small amount of people who lived here. It was just Enji, sometimes his sons, and Fuyumi, who was moving out. Speaking of Fuyumi, wasn't that her on the couch? "Oh, shit."

Hoshi had experienced a lot of 'oh, shit' moments in his life. His birth was the first one. Then there was that time when he found out he didn't have a quirk-- that one sucked. Well, it's not that he didn't have a quirk, it's that he sort of lost his on accident. That was besides the point. He was effectively quirkless and like, a disappointment to society or whatever. Like so what if he was sort of old to be in dance school. It's not like he had a choice or anything like that. Anyway, that was off topic. This was a big 'oh, shit' moment because he could smell the impending tea brewing.

"Who's that?" Hawks asked out loud, blinking as Endeavor also tromped further into the house. The man had several bags hanging off one arm, and was wearing a disguise that would make him less recognizable in public. He paused when spotted his daughter and Hawks sitting on the couch, his gaze hardening ever so slightly at the sight. Fuyumi felt a shiver go down her spine, a frosty fog emerging from her fingers as her nerves spiked. This wasn't good at all. He didn't look happy. That being said, who was this man with him?

"Oh, right, hi. I'm Hoshi Kansai. You look familiar. Doesn't he look familiar?" The man, Hoshi, looking up at Enji only briefly before gasping and snapping his fingers. Right, wings. Hoshi knew that. "You're Fuyumi's soulmate, Hawks! Small world."

"She lives here." Enji noted, amused. Fuyumi looked surprised. Honestly, Enji hadn't expected her to be here, let alone Hawks. Now he wasn't too sure what to do. They were both staring at him and at Hoshi, and Hoshi was staring at them right back. It was an immensely awkward situation. Did he introduce Hoshi as his soulmate? Try to hide it? Ignore them and proceed to the second living room instead? That last option seemed like the best one in his opinion, but Hoshi might beg to differ. He sometimes had dramatic reactions to small decisions for no reason. It was obnoxious, but in a cute way.

"Right, right." Hoshi clapped his hands together. He totally knew that. Remembered. That. Yes.

"We can go." Fuyumi stood up abruptly, and Hawks scrambled to do the same. His wings expanded slightly, curling protectively around them ever so slightly. Enji blinked at them. Hawks wanted to glare, but knew he was the one who'd come into Endeavor's home to begin with. At least the man wasn't on fire. The last time they'd seen each other, they'd gotten into a massive fight on UA's school grounds that had ended with Enji getting kicked off the campus and Hawks finally finding himself accepted by Fuyumi.

"Oh, no, we can go somewhere else." Hoshi didn't want to force them out. They were here first. Finders keepers, losers weepers. They could go cry and eat chocolate in the car. Crying was sort of nice sometimes, you know? So was weed, but Enji was sort of against that, so like, liquor. "Right, Enji?"

"Yeah, of course." Enji said immediately, sounding far too casual and polite. Fuyumi swallowed heavily, glancing at her soulmate. Was this a threat? It felt like a threat. She couldn't tell whether or not he was angry. It was usually made pretty obvious.

Hawks' nose scrunched up. This was such a... he just wasn't expecting it was all. It's not that it was particularly bad or anything. He definitely preferred this over getting burned alive. This short little man named Hoshi seemed nice. He seemed like the type to have his head in the clouds, but Endeavor also seemed a lot more... relaxed and agreeable. And Fuyumi had been fretting about those children since she first found out about them. What sort of soulmate would he be if he didn't at least try to make things work out, you know? He wanted to be the best possible partner! That meant taking risks and possibly getting them both killed!

"Hey, wait." Hawks spoke up suddenly, stopping Hoshi in his tracks and Enji as well. They both turned. Hoshi was blinking curiously, and Enji was glaring mildly. Fuyumi froze. "You... You, uh, you have a lot of space here. So we were wondering if I could move in with Fuyumi. And if we could, uh, bring a bunch of homeless... quirkless orphans... in too..." Hawks cringed slightly as his voice rose in pitch. It could've been worded more eloquently, but he'd panicked. Fuyumi looked horrified. Enji's eyes were narrowed dangerously now.

Enji had no idea what was going on. After finding out he was Endeavor, Hoshi had insisted they meet up so Enji could set his face on fire in front of him as proof. Of course Enji had complied, and after Hoshi blinked and said 'huh, guess that's legit', they'd gone on some sort of shopping spree that ended in Enji getting himself and Hoshi several matching shirts from Walmart of all places. They weren't high quality shirts in the least, and most of them had dumb graphics on them, but Hoshi had been too happy for him to say no.

Now Hawks was in his house and wanted to move in with a bunch of homeless children, and Fuyumi was looking at him like he was about to kill them both. He sort of wanted to stomp out of the room angrily but knew Hoshi would kick him in the shins. For someone so small, he was surprisingly strong, all things considered. Dangerous and small. The bruises on his left leg still hurt. He never should've insulted that stray dog for looking like a raggedy mop. Apparently that was 'insanely disrespectful'. Enji was only glad the mutt had run away before Hoshi could grab it and claim it his. Enji wouldn't have been able to refuse.

"Whoa, whoa, you want to move in here with a bunch of quirkless orphans?" Hoshi asked, folding his arms across his chest before Enji could muster up any sort of 'hell no' to offer forth. The flame hero was struck with the sudden realization that hey, Hoshi was quirkless. And this could also get Fuyumi to forgive him. That being said, where had Fuyumi found a bunch of quirkless orphans? "Shit, man, that's a great idea!"

"It is?" Enji, Hawks, and Fuyumi all asked at the same time. Hoshi looked up at Enji with a bland look on his face. Could he not see the grandness that could ensue from this? This could serve as proof that he'd changed his ways and actually cared! Not only that, but it would stop Fuyumi from leaving and give him more of a chance to rebuild all the bridges he'd burned. Pun intended. Yes. Hoshi was a comedian and a genius melded into one. And a bit of a moron, but they wouldn't dwell on that part of his being at the moment.

"Uh, right. It is." Enji cleared his throat when he saw the look his soulmate was giving him. Awkwardly, he shifted in his place. "The west wing of the house hasn't been used for some time. You're free to it if it... ah, is suitable to your needs."

Fuyumi stared stared at her father blankly for a moment. Her entire face had gone pale-- paler than it usually was. She looked white as a sheet. Hawks saw and felt the exact moment it was going to happen. Something welled up inside of him, Fuyumi's face scrunched up, her shoulders hunched, and before anyone could say much of anything, she did the only thing she knew how to at the moment.

She burst into a fit of tears. And honestly, no one could really blame her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I've never seen so many queer soulmates in one place! It's like there's a concentration specifically in this part of Japan. If you look at the statistics for this area, you'll see that the queer population of soul bonds is actually a lot higher in these parts. Isn't that insane?" Izuku rambled. Shoto nodded along graciously while they ate. Hawks had called and said they could take the kids. There was a lot of crying in the background, and Takashi swore up and down he heard Dear Evan Hansen playing. Touya listened in and swore he heard it too, along with a lot of banging. Like pots clanking together. With all the time he spent in the kitchen retrieving things for Takashi and helping out, everyone supposed he would know.
"Still, to think Bakugo of all the little shits would get a soulmate. A quirkless one at that." Touya whistled. They were eating lunch. The kids were all getting checked out by Recovery Girl at the moment and would need to be picked up by Takashi afterwards. Touya was now trusted enough that everyone was about ready to get his quirk suppressing cuffs off for good. 1-A would surely riot if it didn't happen soon. A few parents had even called and request they be removed, because apparently there were complained from their children about how they weren't even needed anymore and how it was dumb. Touya had gotten a little misty-eyed at that.
"He's got to love that." Shoto drawled sarcastically. Izuku snorted and smacked his arm.
"Oh, he'll adjust. The soulmate bond can be resisted. Most people just don't want to." Takashi shrugged and smiled. "Bakugo and Isao are both stubborn, but they'll adjust!"
"I'm sure they will! Kacchan is stubborn, but he isn't dumb." Izuku nodded surely. Takashi smiled in a bright manner. Things were honestly going quite great as of late. Takashi was really just waiting for something to come along and fuck it all up. Enji Todoroki still didn't know Touya was alive. That could be an issue. The thing with Rei was still a mess. Apparently Endeavor was laying off and even getting help. Because Tsukauchi was Rei's soulmate, he hadn't been able to carry the case forward. No other detectives were rising to the challenge, but if the man really was changing, maybe that was good. As long as they had Shoto.
"Speaking of Isao and the kids, are we sure letting them live in the estate is really a good idea?" Touya ran a hand through his red spikes, frowning. "My father..."
"We'll see." Takashi chirped. "He won't go near them if he knows what's good for them. I can't send them back to that shelter, so this is our next best option unless we want to dump them on Rei and Tsukauchi. God knows they don't need that kind of stress."
Touya snorted at the thought. His mother loved kids, but that many, with all those issues? Probably not. She was trying to relax and take her life slow nowadays, and Touya couldn't very much blame her. She deserved to settle down with her soulmate and be happy. To be honest, Touya was just about ready to transfer ownership of their apartment over to her. Unless she wanted to move into Tsukauchi's place. They'd have to play it by ear.
"I'm sure it'll be fine. You'll be taking them over, right? You won't let anything happen." Touya assured. Even as he said that, he couldn't help but have his doubts. "It'll be fine."
Takashi smiled and nodded despite his own unsureities. Things would be just fine. Things were going great so far! There was absolutely no reason for anything to go wrong now. The kids would be safe and taken care of, Enji would fuck off, Fuyumi would be happy with Hawks, and Touya would get the quirk suppressing cuffs off. And they'd all live happily ever after!
Right?
