Chapter 21

Y'all got it all wrong lmao. Adding Hoshi doesn't give Endeavor a free pass. He'll still pay for his crimes, he'll just do it outside of jail while having his gay awakening and realizing he's a shit father, and taking up baking.

Third person pov

"Why hasn't Dabi contacted us yet?!" Shigaraki scratched at his neck furiously, impatience burning in his crimson eyes. It had been weeks, and Dabi hadn't even tried to contact them with information on UA. Had he truly betrayed them? The others seemed to think so, but he'd been so willing at the summer camp. He didn't seem like the type to be intimidated into starting arson. If he didn't want to do something, Shigaraki was sure he was the type to simply not do it, no matter what anyone said.

Dabi wasn't an idiot. He was a valuable with asset, and they needed everyone they could get. They'd lost a lot of people at the attack on the summer camp, and now Sensei was gone. He'd passed on his wishes to Shigaraki, and the man was determined to carry them out to the very best of his ability. No matter what annoyances he had to deal with. Dabi could cremate people with his quirk. That was the kind of raw power they'd be needing if they wanted to bring down the heroes. Sensei had taken care of All Might. Now, it was Shigaraki's clean up the rest.

"UA is still on high guard. We wouldn't want him to risk getting us caught just to tell us what we already know." Kurogiri honestly was pretty sure Dabi wasn't with the League any longer. The warp-gate user couldn't very well blame the man. He hadn't wanted to join the first place, and he wasn't a believer in trying to force someone to do something they didn't want to. If villains wished to seek refuge within the League and aid them in reaching their goals, that was quite alright. But trying to make someone...

"Still. He's turning into a useless pawn." Shigaraki stopped his scratching abruptly, his hands curling into hard fists. Kurogiri watched with keen eyes, hoping he wouldn't disintegrate the counter again. He was running out of ramen to fix it with. "...What would sensei do if he were here?"

"He'd wait." Kurogiri chimed. Shigaraki's sharp gaze flitted to him, but it luckily wasn't hostile. Kurogiri had to means to combat any attacks the man might make out of irritation, anyway. He'd still greatly prefer not to. "Sensei was a patient man. Do him proud, Tomura Shigaraki."

Shigaraki was silent for a long moment, evidently considering his words. Kurogiri continued polishing the same glass he had been for the last five minutes, dreading having to make dinner. Half of Twice was terribly picky, and trying to feed Toga was like trying to feed a toddler. Spinner was fairly easy, and would eat just about anything without complaint. Tomura himself was a bit of a challenge, but Kurogiri had been taking care of him long enough to have his meal preferences down to a pat.

"Fine." Shigaraki straightened in his chair, his tone petulant. "We'll wait. But in the meantime... what do we have on Chisaki Kai?"

Kurogiri's glowing eyes curved as he smiled.

All Might was... worried about returning to UA. His fight against All For One had nearly killed him. Though he'd been able to go from house to house with Aizawa to convince parents that dorms were the way to go, he'd quickly had to go back to the hospital to complete a series of surgeries to help repair his struggling organs. His heart had been severely weakened by the grievous battle. Risking coming back to school to try and teach wasn't something he would dare do. He'd promised Young Midoriya, the boy he'd come to see as more than just a successor, that he'd live. So he'd done everything in his power to do so.

He had some bandages still, and his arm would be in a sling for a while, but he was here. His green-haired almost-son-but-unfortunately-not-quite-his-son had been texting him updates. At first Toshinori had been sure he was joking. Dabi, the same one from the summer camp, had shown up with his soulmate, was gay, Todoroki's brother, and really liked cats? And apparently had hadn't meant to set the forest on fire and attack the students, and it was all just one huge misunderstanding. After a few days of updates on Dabi and Takashi, Toshinori had been fully prepared to call bullshit.

And then, the pictures started.

Izuku seldom ever sent photos of himself. However, as Toshinori was lying in his hospital bed at four in the morning, smiling at the boy's rambling texts, one had come through. Only half of Izuku's face was actually in it, a smear of what could have been icing on his cheek. They were in the kitchen despite the ungodly hour, Todoroki in the middle of falling backwards and had eggshells in his hair. Dabi-- or he supposed it was Touya now-- was covered in flour, his eyes wide and trained on the camera in horror at being caught in a photo red-handed. Who Toshinori assumed had to be Takashi was happily standing next to them, spotless and with a perfectly iced cupcake in hand. Toshinori's jaw had dropped. His successor was smiling his sunshine smile, his eyes shining.

There were more after that. A picture of Takashi and Touya's picture wall, Shoto and Touya flipping off a vandalized picture of Endeavor that Takashi was holding over his head, Takashi on on Touya's shoulders trying to change a light-bulb in the laundry room at five in the morning, Shoto shirtless and cooking bacon on his torso, a video of Touya and Takashi bursting through the door and screaming "stop!" just as Shoto stuffed half of the pork strips into his mouth. It was all very amusing.

Their general dislike for Endeavor was reoccurring, and All Might couldn't help but think back to his run in with the man at the Sports Festival. He'd been hostile, and referred to Young Todoroki as though he were some sort of object. A prize he'd created, and not a young boy. It made Toshinori feel a bit sick, but at least the half-and-half teenager seemed happier. Or at least he was in the photos Toshinori had been getting.

Izuku seemed genuinely happy despite all that had happened. As the days dragged on, Toshinori found solace in those photos and texts. They were a wonderful escape. It was overjoying to slowly see Touya open up more and more, and to see Izuku do the same. More of 1-A slowly began to appear in the pictures Izuku was sent. The green-haired boy even sent one of himself kissing Shoto's cheek, wisps of steam rising off the surprised boy's left side. Toshinori had been a bit shocked by that one. Izuku had alluded to having a soulmate, but he had no idea it was Young Todoroki.

It was amusing to see, and even more amusing when Tsukauchi started to show up in a few of the snapshots. Apparently the man had found his soulmate, which was Shoto and Touya's mother. That made Toshinori's heart feel entirely light. He couldn't help but smile! He'd have to go to lunch with Naomasa soon so he could tell him all about it. He was glad his friend had a destined someone they were meant to be with. It made Toshinori feel giddy, and ready to get back into the swing of simply living. Just knowing people were out there, still going about their days and existing peacefully amidst his fall was comforting.

UA looked daunting as he entered its gates, earning a welcome from Cementoss who was manning the front this morning. He'd chosen to come back on the weekend so he wouldn't have to come only to dive right back into class. He was surprised they still wanted him to teach. He could no longer maintain his hero form like he used to. The torch that was One For All had been passed on to Izuku, who Toshinori was sure would be the final holder. The end. He was proud of that fact. He knew Izuku would continue to make him proud.

The dorms were just as large and glorious as they'd looked in Izuku's abundance of photographs. Toshinori couldn't stop himself from craning his head to take the structure in completely. As per usual, UA had truly outdone itself. And to think it had only taken a day to make them all. Color him impressed. He never would have thought of dorms, but they were a decent solution now that he thought about it. He certainly didn't mind having Young Midoriya within the reach of several pro-heroes. The boy was a trouble magnet.

"Oh, All Might!" A voice chirped, and he snapped out of his thoughts. His blue eyes met a pair of bright green ones, and he was struck with the realization that this was Takashi Todoroki. He appeared to be a lot more bubbly in person, even just standing there and smiling. The photos didn't do the colors he wore justice. He was an entire rainbow, with numerous hair clips stuck in his mess of brown locks, and his arms covered in brightly colored rubber bands. "You're here to see Izuku, right? He's just this way."

"O-Oh, yes. It's a pleasure to meet you. Young Midoriya has told me a lot about you." All Might offered a tentative smile, his tone sincere though slightly unsure. Takashi assessed him. Despite how cheerful the man seemed, Toshinori knew of his rage quirk and was substantially intimidated the by shorter man. To think someone so small could go from smiling and happy to pissed off in a second was mildly terrifying in a way. Toshinori really didn't fancy getting thrown through a wall in this form. Or in any form, really. Hopefully he wouldn't make a fool of himself and anger the brunette by mistake.

"He's told us a lot about you, too!" Takashi beamed up at him as he held the door. Toshinori bobbed his head in thanks, smiling to himself at the thought of Izuku talking about him. It made his heart warm. "I mean, you are his dad after all."

Toshinori stopped dead, processing.

"H-His what?"

Endeavor was maybe panicking. Just a bit.

Which one of his children had a soulmate? Fuyumi's clearly had Hawks as her own. A formidable partner for her. He was proud, and glad she had someone worthy by her side. Natsuo was never home, so it could be him. He doubted it was Shoto. With the age difference, UA surely wouldn't allow them to be within the dorms together. That meant it had to be Natsuo. Endeavor had never thought his son would be gay, or weak enough to have a destined partner. It made his flames rise and his shoulders tense.

His view on soulmates was jaded, he would admit. His parents had been soulmates, and despite being loving and caring towards one another, they were not the same towards him. It was painful to see them so happy together but so hateful towards him. He knew he was no better with his children, and it was a fact he was quite deeply ashamed of. Sometimes he just didn't know how to stop or how to undo what he'd already inflicted, if he even could. He was frustrated that he defaulted to Number One instead of earning it. He was angry with the mess All Might had left behind, and with his children.

He was not a 'family man' as some might call it. Not even slightly. Power was what he wanted and cared about, and he never should have had children. His parents had always said that power gave you worth, and they were right. He was strong, and he isolated himself from affection. He couldn't get hurt that way. He only wanted his kids to do the same, for their own sakes. Some might call it running away. In a way, it was. He just didn't want to get attached. They'd only be ripped away from him if he dared show too much care. Endeavor knew one day he'd inevitably lose his life in the field, and when that day came, he didn't want his children to mourn or to bat an eye at the loss. He wanted them to rise up, stronger than ever and maybe even relieved. To take his place and be better.

It still pissed him off, however. Custody of Shoto had been ripped away from him, and the hold he had on Rei had been pulled out from beneath his feet. All by some measly brunette splashed in a crayon box of color. It was ridiculous! He'd tried to find him on the UA registry of teachers to no avail, which meant he was going to have to dig a bit deeper. Even now as he was patrolling he couldn't help but think about it. It made his fists clench and his teeth grit.

Fuyumi having her own life was alright. Grabbing her had been the wrong move, and seeing the red mark his heated hand had made caused his heart to clench uncomfortably. He just got... got so angry sometimes. He tried to rein it in, but it was too much at times. He'd tried getting it to go away. Since the Sports Festival, he'd been better. But tensions were rising, and he was just as stressed as the other top pros. Crime rate was increasing exponentially, and the League was out for blood. Endeavor was afraid for his children. For Shoto, who'd moved into the dorms for protection. It made his throat dry to think of what may happen were one of his enemies to get their hands on his youngest.

Endeavor huffed to himself, stopping at a red light. A few college students snapped pictures of him with their cameras, and he kept his expression stern and un-moving. He had to stay composed. Everyone was looking at him to fill All Might's shoes, and he needed to remain vigilant to uphold peace. He couldn't let the villains think hero society was as weak as it truly was at the moment. Best Jeanist was out of commission until further notice, and All Might could no longer uphold his hero form. It was up to those left standing, now.

He and several others crossed the street. Endeavor was a large man, taking up a great deal of space. People generally gave him a pretty wide berth. Now was no different, people staying mindful of the licking flames on his boots and hulking shoulders. He exhaled with a sharp huff as he stalked across the crosswalk, intent on getting something to eat for lunch when-

Someone's shoulder knocked into his arm as a gaggle of what looked like college students passed him. His eyes shot down to the small individual who'd accidentally stumbled his way, his turquoise eyes meeting the bluest aqua ones he'd ever seen in his life. Sparks shot through him as the person blinked up at him with clear surprise, their wild, curly, dark blue hair framing their face perfectly as they looked away to grab their bag. His chest tightened, and his eyes went wide. His shoulders fell slack as he stood there doing nothing but staring down at them dumbly.

"Sorry about that. I'm a clumsy asshole." The small someone-- definitely a male-- said. They looked up at him, squinting. "Thanks for doing your hero... thing. And making we don't like, die and stuff. You have nice eyes. Very uh... tingly?"

And with that they shrugged and walked off, leaving him frozen in place to stare after them. The cars waiting to go didn't have the guts to honk at the Number One hero as he processed what had just happened. His lips parted in surprise as the small young man disappeared in the crowd, ratty backpack bouncing against their back as they darted off. His thoughts spiraled down as he slowly dragged himself the last few feet to the sidewalk, head still twisting in the direction the blue-eyed man had disappeared. One word rung through his mind strongly.

Soulmate.

Endeavor looked down at his hands. He thought back to his recent griping thoughts on his sons possible homosexuality, and couldn't only whisper one thing to himself. It was rather uncharacteristic of him, but it had been a very long time since his heart had raced int his way, and this sort of shock had overtaken him.

"I'm a hypocritical asshole." He breathed, horrified. He looked up in the direction his soulmate had apparently gone, his heart sinking when he realized that they were gone. And that he was left standing there, unsure of what to do, and with his life forever changed. He thought back to Takashi, and to Rei, and to all he'd done with his life. His flames lowered slightly. He hadn't even realized how much they'd flared up. It didn't matter. All he could was try to convince himself the tingles were nothing as he loitered at the corner, completely and totally screwed.
