SOPHIE POV

Darkness. Pain. Unbearable pain.

I could feel Dad breathing beside me. The bed was hard.

I was awake. The surgery was over.

Someone came in.

"I'm just here to remove the IV."

"When will she be up?"

"She should be in about half an hour."

I was up but I couldn't speak. My throat was sore.

Then I felt a sharp pain in my hand as the nurse took out the needle and placed a bandaid.

"It's all over now wake up for me." Dad.

The nurse went out.

"She isn't up yet?". Miles.

"No, she started crying again a while ago when I went out for a minute. She was screaming Dad Dad Dad."

"She's in immense pain."

"Hey Sophie wake up for me. The scary part is over. You'll be allowed to go home in a while."

"I'm up." I wanted to say but it didn't come out like that it came out kind of like a baby saying it.

"You're up, now I know it's scary and painful but do you need anything? Water?"

I nodded and I think Dad helped me drink water.

"Do you feel dizzy?"

"A bit."

"Okay, nauseous?"

"No."

"Alright your dad is going to help you eat a few biscuits and then you can go home. Today you're going to be sleeping most of the time. I'll see you tomorrow now okay?"

"Okay."

I heard him go out.

"I'm so glad you're awake. How's the pain?"

"It's bad. It's extremely itchy and it feels like something poking my eye."

"One to ten?"

"Ten crores."

"I'm so sorry."

"It's not your fault."

I could speak properly now but my throat still hurt.

He helped me eat biscuits and drink a bit of water.

"You can both go now." A man said after an hour.

"Thank you."

"Dad, what's the time?"

"It's around 5."

"Can we go home now?"

"Of course. I just need to get the wheelchair."

"Can I change?"

"Oh yeah, of course, I'll get your clothes."

I changed myself dad just holding the clothes.

"I want to walk"

"You'll be dizzy."

"My feet are asleep. I want to walk please."

"It'll be difficult baby."

"I don't care. I need to think of something other than the stinging feeling in my eyes."

"Okay okay I'm sorry, just please don't leave my hand. You have bandages over your eyes, and you'll feel extremely weak when you stand up."

I nodded and he helped me stand up. We walked slowly. He held my hands.

"We're out of the room now."

Slowly, we got to the elevator and I heard the doors close and then silence. It was weird. Not being able to see and no voices around.

"Can you talk?"

"Of course now we're two floors down from where we start soon it's gonna be three but not four, cause we only came up three floors."  He sang making me laugh.

"Anddddddddddddddd the doors open."

I heard chaos. People yelling, monitors sounding.

The ER.

"We're in the ER."

He tightened his grip and walked a bit ahead of me.

The noise disappeared and I could feel the night's cold settling in.

"Are we out?"

"Yeah, I'm going to make someone get the car.I can't leave you alone and it'll be hard to walk slow." I nodded.

"Hey Dr. Walker."

"Hi Dr. Hawkins. Can you do me a quick favor?"

"Of course. What's it?

Hawkins. That name and that voice seemed familiar.

"I need you to get my car."

"Of course."

"Thank you."

He got the car and Dad helped me to get into it and in a minute he was in too and started it. I was feeling sleepy.

He turned on the music which was slowly starting to fade out.

I woke up to intense pain and itching. I wasn't in the car anymore. I was on a bed, his bed.

"Dad it hurts."

"Dad." I sat up.

"Hey hey what's up?"

"It hurts really bad."

"You're okay, lay down for me please?"

"I can't. Get me the medicine. It hurts too much."

"I'll get the medicine okay?"

"I wanna cry from this pain dad."

"Don't cry, i'm just pouring the water in. You'll feel better."

"Here hold the medicines."

I took the two pills.

I handed him the glass and then he sat on the bed.

"What time is it?"

"5 a.m., you fell asleep in the car."

"I've been asleep around ten hours."

"Yeah, but I don't blame you, you're heavily drugged."

"Is it any better?"

"A bit."

"Those are some good painkillers then."

"Dad what if I can't see tomorrow?"

"Miles said that was very unlikely to happen, but if that happens we'll figure it out. We'll take everything step by step and I'll be here every step of the way."

"I won't be able to do what I want to do then."

"We'll figure it out. What career are you thinking about?"

"Neurosurgeon probably."

"I'm proud of you."

"Thank you dad."

I heard him yawn.

"You should sleep."

"I'm fine. The appointment's in 5 hours anyways."

"5 hours is a lot."

"Not a lot."

We stayed like that, talking. Everything was starting to fade out.

ASHTON POV

It was now 8 am. We had been talking for the last three hours. She was mid-sentence when she fell asleep. I tucked her in. I went to the kitchen for coffee. I hadn't slept more than an hour, I needed coffee. When she woke up from pain, I had just fallen asleep. I was thinking the same thing she was. I had reassured her but I couldn't help but think the same thing. What if she couldn't see? What if she was permanently blind?

I made the coffee and sat on the table to drink it. I went on my phone and saw messages from Parker.

Parker: Hey doc, just wondering if everything's alright? Sophie hasn't been at school for the last two days and she isn't replying to messages. I'm just worried.

That boy was in love with her.

I decided to reply to him later. I stayed on my phone for a while, replying to messages and then just reading stuff.

It was now 9 am. I went to shower and I was out in ten minutes then woke her up.

"Hey soph wake up, we have to go to the hospital."

"It hurts."

"I know it does, but you'll be okay don't worry?"

"Dad promise me you'll be here no matter what happens at the hospital."

"I'm always here. Whether it goes right or wrong."

SOPHIE POV

I knew Dad would be here, no matter what. But, I was anxious. What if everything went wrong? What if the surgery wasn't successful?

I sat on the bed and Dad helped me change into a baggy hoodie and leggings. He helped me into the car and we were on our way.

"Music please? I need to think about something else."

He turned it on.

"How long is it going to take?"

"Around five minutes more."

He stopped the car letting me know we had arrived. He sighed

"I love you no matter what."

"I love you dad."

He helped me out, and walking at the same pace as yesterday we were now in the waiting room.

"Sophie Walker?" I heard Miles say from a distance.

"We're here."
