A little A/n please read <3
The experience talked about in the next few chapters is personal, I had eye surgery myself in February. So it's accurate to the best of my knowledge and I don't know if anything like this can happen in real life cause my situation was different <3.
I hope you're all enjoying the book!! Let me know your thoughts.
SOPHIE POV
"I have good news and bad news, the good one is that this is not permanent, the bad one is that you'll have to have eye surgery," Miles said.
"What is it?"
"I can't explain but something's pressing on the nerves." I heard him sit down.
"Is it retinoblastoma?"
"It's not cancerous. If it was, she would've seen the bright light."
"Okay, when are you gonna do it?"
"You tell me. I can either do it tomorrow or in a few hours."
"Is it gonna hurt?" I asked, I was scared. Beyond scared. Just the thought of him poking things in my eye scared me.
"Not during the surgery, you'll be asleep but it'll be excruciating pain for the first 4 to 5 days and then it'll be just uncomfortable pain for the 10 to 12 days."
Dad sighed.
"Can you explain in detail what's going to be the plan?"
"I need a date first. Today or tomorrow?"
"Today," I said.
"Okay. Do you agree Ashton?"
"Yeah, the sooner the better."
"Alright, so when did you last eat or drink Sophie?"
"In the evening yesterday."
"So it's been more than 8 hours, I'll do it around 1.
"Okay."
"Don't eat or drink anything, you'll be taken to a room. Alright?"
"Yeah."
"You don't need to hear the things that are going to happen in there, so let's start with after the surgery, After you wake up we'll give you biscuits and juice and then wait to see if you throw up, if you don't you can go home, if you do you'll go home when you stop feeling nauseous."
"When are we going to know that the surgery worked?"
"Tomorrow when I take the bandages off."
"What are the chances of it not working?"
"Next to none."
"How long will it be?"
"Around 3 hours."
"She'll be asleep?"
"Fully medicated."
"What's the aftercare?"
"Today you don't have to do anything, just take any painkiller cause the pain will be unbearable and I'll give you antibiotics for three days to prevent infection."
"Okay."
"Any more questions?"
"Nope."
"Sophie?"
"No."
"You'll be taken to a room now, you'll have to wear a gown and I'll see you before surgery." I heard the door open and then close.
"Are you in the room?"
"I'm right here."
"I just didn't know if you were around."
Then, someone came in.
"Hi I'm Sabrina, he asked me to take you to a room and get you a gown."
"I'm Ashton and this is Sophie."
"Nice to meet you both."
Dad took me to a room, and he helped me to wear the gown. I was now sitting on the bed.
"What color are the walls here?"
"Light green."
"Can you hold my hand? I need to know you're here."
"Of course." He put my hand in his.
It was weird not being able to see anything.
"Nurses told me you were here what happened?"
That was Duke.
"She couldn't see. I got her here, Miles checked her out and she needs surgery, something's pressing on the nerves."
"Gosh, you both can't catch a break."
"Are you okay though Sophie?"
"I'm fine." A lot of thoughts were going through my head and I was zoned out during the rest of their conversation. A couple of other dad's colleagues came in but I didn't want to talk to them so I just sat there with my thoughts.
"What's the time Dad?"
"12:30."
"What time are they going to be here?"
"Well, the prep team gets here about 20 minutes before the surgery, to give relaxers and other medicines, I don't know the exact way here though. Every department works differently."
Just then, I heard two people walk in.
"I'm Shaun and this is Will. We're both going to take you to the OR."
"Shouldn't she get some relaxer here?"
"Everything happens in there, that's why we're taking her twenty minutes before the doctor arrives."
I was going to be in a wheelchair so Dad helped me hang my legs but that was when I couldn't control the tears as they fell.
"We'll give you a minute." One of the guys said.
"I'm scared Dad."
"You're okay, you've been so brave I'm so proud of you. You'll make it through this you'll be alright."
"I love you so much."
"I love you too soph. You need to go in now yeah? You don't have to do anything, you have to just lay there."
Dad called the guys in and after getting me in the wheelchair, they started pushing it. I could hear people talking.
"Dr. Walker you can't go in from here."
"I need my dad please."
"Sophie, baby I can't go in but I'll be right here when you wake up."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"Okay, take me in then," I said and they pushed further.
They took me to a cold room.
"It's cold."
"It's normal don't worry."
"I need my Dad."
"He can't be in here. We're sorry."
They sat me on a table.
"Lay down please." A female voice.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Jenna, anesthesiologist, i'm gonna give you your medicine to sleep."
"IV?"
"Yeah, but it's just going to be a small poke don't worry."
I wasn't worried about the needle in my hand, I was worried about the needles that were going to be in my eye.
After a small poke, and attaching the monitors and all she started talking to me. I was getting sleepy at the moment.
"You'll be alright, just go to sleep."
