The chapter talks about death a lot it's been rewritten I was dealing with some loss as well when I first wrote it so yeah the quality, the emotions that are felt after the death of a loved one are all there. At least what I felt. 

Ashton pov

I lean on the scrub room wall and just sit down. I couldn't breathe, I felt guilty he taught me everything he trusted me and I couldn't even save his life. The man who helped me through the toughest times in my life was now gone, the man who was like a father figure to me was now gone, he was gone and I couldn't do anything about it. I was crying. I couldn't stop it. I couldn't do this. No more it's just too hard everyone dying.  Just then, Duke came in. 

"Ashton, what happened are you okay?" Duke asked. 

"He died, Duke, He died I couldn't save him he died." I said repeating the words he died. My breathing was still bad but I didn't care. 

"Ashton, first of all, breathe you need to calm down it's okay it wasn't your fault just breathe it'll be okay." He said. When I said that he died I could see Duke's expression change he was taken aback but he quickly got himself composed to calm me down. 

"Ashton breathe please." He said again. I started focusing on my breathing and soon enough, it was okay. I was not sure what I felt but my breathing was okay.

"Good job, I'm proud of you. Now come on, wash your face and we'll talk about it." 

"I need to call his daughter, Tess." I said. 

"Focus on yourself right now Ashton, I'll tell one of the residents to call her from his file just come with me." 

"I need to tell her, she needs to hear it from me." I said. 

"She will, I'll tell you when she's here, now come with me right now." He said. I nodded. 

We walked over to the restrooms. I went over to the sinks and looked at myself my hair was a mess, I was a mess. I washed my face and fixed my hair a bit. Duke came in and just stood there not saying anything. 

"Now, Do you want to talk Ashton?" He asked. 

"I don't know, let's just go to my office." I said. 

"Okay, Also I told Neil to call Tess. She'll be here in  a few hours.He said. 

"Don't tell her over the phone." I said. 

"I told him that." Duke said. We walked over to my office. We sat on the exam table itself. I didn't have anymore appointments. 

"I couldn't save him Duke, I failed himhe did everything for me and I just let him die." I said crying yet again. 

"Ashton, you did everything you could you did your best, I'm sure he's proud of you for that. The accident he was in was bad. I saw his chart. It was impossible to save him Ash." He said.

"But I could've saved him somehow, but I didn't." I said still crying I'm sure I was stuttering but he understood. 

"You couldn't Ashton, he was too far gone." He said. I nodded. I didn't want to talk anymore. He understood and sat there with me. My mind was filled with how I couldn't save him. Soon Duke snapped his fingers in front of my face taking me out of thinking. 

"Tess's here." He said. I nodded. 

I took a deep breath and stepped off the exam table. I splashed some water on my face and wiped my face. 

"Can you do this?" Duke asked. 

"I have to. She needs to hear this from me." I said. I quickly walked over to the waiting room. She was sitting there her leg bouncing worried about her dad. I took a deep breath again and walked over to her. 

"Ashton?" She quickly asked. 

"Yeah, it's me." I said as I sat down on one of the chairs. This room was empty. 

"How's dad?" She asked. 

"I'm sorry Tess we did everything we could. The accident was too severe." I said, not believing my own words. 

"What? Ashton tell me this is a stupid prank of his." She said smiling. She was probably in shock.

"It isn't tess, he's dead. He had a bad accident this morning. He didn't want to tell you until he was out of surgery cause he didn't want to worry you." I said. 

"But like he won't come out now, he always does this not to worry me and now I couldn't even be there for him when he was suffering, dying." She said breaking down. I didn't do anything. She wasn't a hugger. I stayed quiet. 

"Can I see him?" She asked her voice breaking in between. 

"Sure, he's in a room for now." I said. I started walking and she followed him. 

He was in a bed, his whole covered with a white sheet. I removed the sheet and just stood in a corner. I didn't want to interrupt her. Her mother died when while giving birth. He was the only parent she ever knew. The best parent. I couldn't hear her she was just mumbling things. 

"Goodbye, dad." She said covering his face back. 

"I-uh don't think I can drive right now, can you please get me a cab? I'm just gonna go to his house. " She said.

"I'll drop you it's only 10 minutes," I said. 

"Thank you." She said. 

 We went to the lift and I pushed the buttons to go to the ground floor. We weren't talking. She was sniffling.  We got in my car and I stopped outside his house. 

"Thank you Ashton." She said. 

"I'm always here for you Tess, you have my number call or text me anything." I said. 

"I will, thank you." She said, took her bag and went out. I drove to the hospital and checked my phone in the parking lot. 

I saw a text and a missed call from Sophie. 

Sophie: Hey dad, I'm going home on the bus you haven't replied to the previous text yet hope everything's okay!! 

I replied "okay, and yeah it's all okay I'll be home a bit late so if you need anything to eat just order anything you have my card at home, don't order anything for me."  I hit send. I didn't tell her she would just worry and I needed to tell her this face to face. She was close to him and I needed to be there for her. I got out of my car and went up. I checked the O.R board for any small surgeries that would be done in an hour or two. There were ones that would be done in around 5 hours. It was 5 pm. It would be 10 or 11 when I finish those. 

"Ashton, where were you I was searching for you all around the hospital?" Duke asked. 

"I went to drop Tess. She wasn't in a state to drive." I said. 

"You aren't either." He said. 

"I'm okay duke physically mentally I have no idea but I need to do this I need something to distract me and something that'll be done in like 2 hours I need to get home too." I said. 

"Wanna set some bones in the E.R? There are a few." He asked. 

"Yes, please. I need to take my mind off this." I said. I wasn't an orthopedic surgeon, I was a general one but setting bones were basic so I could do that. We went down to the E.R. I set them quick with a lot of screams but it took my mind off things. 

I texted duke that I was going home. I grabbed my things from the office and went down to my car. I just sat there for a while thinking of how I was going to tell Sophie. I started driving home with no idea how to. 

Sophie pov

I was watching tv at home. When I reached home I just changed my clothes and sat on the couch watching tv. I heard the door open. It was dad.

"Hey dad." I said quickly running to him and hugging him he looked like he needed home. He must've had a tough day at the hospital.

"Hey Sophie." He says hugging me back. We both sit down on the couch. 

"Can you turn the volume a bit, we need to talk?"He said. He sounded serious. I nodded and did that. 

"How was your first day of school?" He asked.

"It was good. Parker's there too." I said. I was sure he didn't want to talk to me about that. I was sure it was something serious he could ask about my day with the volume up. 

"That's great and it's a small world isn't it?" He said. 

"Yeah, dad." I said now fidgeting with my fingers. He got quiet for a while. I could tell he was thinking. 

"What is it dad?" I asked quickly. I couldn't bear this silence anymore. 

"Dr Wlliam, he passed away, he had a bad accident this morning." He said quickly. I didn't know what to feel. He was like my grandfather. I don't really have memories of my grandfather but he was a good one. 

"I'm sorry Soph." He said. I started crying he hugged me, and then soon I was tired of it. I closed my eyes. 

"It'll be okay soph I don't know when it will be. I love you so much." Dad said. 

"I love you too dad thank you for everything."  I said and sleep took over me.
