This Is Halloween:: A Note A Day

THIS IS HALLOWEEN:: A NOTE A DAY ONE SHOT (OR JUST A CUTE LIL ONE SHOT ABOUT A COUPLE CUTE TEENS)

THERE WAS ALWAYS a chill on Halloween nights. Wind whistled through the trees, leaves blowing, waving, falling. Kids screaming, running ahead of their parents.

Theodore always had a strong dislike for this holiday.

This was besides the fact that he got candy, of course. When he was younger, he would always grab all of the Reese's that the house offered. As well as the skittles, so he could trade with Malcolm. Malcolm loved skittles.

Now on Halloween, Theodore loved to just sneak a Reese's from his mom's candy bowl and head to bed early. Try and get as much sleep as he could.

This year, however.

When Charlie asked him to hand out candy at the bookstore, Teddy had to try and contain his slight amusement on the phone. He hadn't done something special for Halloween in a while. Not since...

Malcolm and Shane were going too, apparently. They wouldn't tell Tedd— er, Theodore, what they were going to dress up as (for Charlotte had forced them to wear a costume instead of Theodore's much-loved jeans and a band t-shirt). Charlie wouldn't tell him what costume she planned for herself, either.

Halloween was tonight, and he was a little lost. Costumes were not his specialty, not his specialty at all. Should he do scary? Book-related? Movie character? TV character?

Or maybe he would just go as a nerd — AKA: himself.

God. Why was he worked up about this? Why was he always so worked up about things when Charlotte was involved?

Off to the store, apparently. The things he did for that girl.

Teddy sighed and grabbed his keys from the hook, yelling to his mother that he'd be back.

This is Halloween, he thought wearily.

🎃🎃🎃

SHANE HAD ALWAYS loved Halloween.

The two C's: Candy and Costumes. He loved to pick out the most unheard of, unusual, flabbergasting costumes he could.

One year, Shane could recall that he went as the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, while his sister was Belle. Another year, he went as a contestant for American Idol. He had a big-ole' number slapped to his chest and he brought along a microphone, too. When people opened their doors, he began to sing them This is Halloween from that creepy Tim Burton movie. It was awesome. Then, recently, he went as Ferris Bueler. So basically — Shane rocked at Halloween costumes. And Halloween, in general. If anyone could get the greatest amount of candy, it would be him.

When Malcolm told Shane they were passing out candy, Shane wasn't disappointed, per say. He loved Charlotte. But it wasn't his ideal Halloween. He hated kids, and kids who begged were the worst. But his love for Charlotte overruled his disgust for the tiny mutants.

He had already planned out his costume. Costume-planning was a skill only a selected few had received upon their birth on this planet. And he was one of those people (not to brag).

Shane refused to tell anyone his costume. It was sacred.

He began to suit up.

This is Halloween, he thought giddily.

🎃🎃🎃

MALCOLM WAS NEUTRAL with his thoughts on Halloween.

He didn't love it, didn't hate it. Maybe he felt a little powerful putting on the superhero mask or holding the Harry Potter wand or wearing the clothes of Elvis Presley, but still. Halloween was freezing cold and sometimes in the rain and you have to walk the whole ways.

He loved to act. Always had, always will. Costumes were a part of acting. When you put on that outfit, you became that character. For some reason, Malcolm always felt slightly enthusiastic about that fact. Maybe he liked being someone other than the "popular", quiet, theater kid who found pleasure in doing math problems in his spare time.

So yeah, maybe he did like Halloween, just a small bit.

He was already in his costume. Charlotte wanted them there by five, so five it would be.  The street Charlotte lived on was a fairly busy road, so he expected kids to be crawling over to the bookstore a lot. His costume was pretty hard to piece together, the jacket and the glasses, along with his hair somewhat slicked back . . . But he didn't mind very much. This is Halloween, after all, he thought to himself.

🎃🎃🎃

CHARLOTTE COULD NOT express in words her love for Halloween.

The whole spooky air and mischievous, haunting stories and gleeful kids leaping down the street with a smile on their face really made Charlie like Halloween even more. It was a gift inside a gift.

Charlotte hoped she was strict enough with her rules to the boys; if one of them didn't show up in a costume, she'd straight out yell at them and kick them out.

No she wouldn't. She wouldn't be able say that to Teddy's cute face. Any . . . Any of their cute faces, she meant.

Halloween was a big holiday for her.  She would never be too old for Halloween, or dressing up.

This costume, however.

She went all out. Sprayed her hair with the temporary color sort of object, and, of course, bought a lot of red. She had to wear the costume this year, in celebration of the new movie coming out soon.

Halloween was one way he channeled her love for something. Love Harry Potter a lot, why not dress as Hermione and spread the love? Love the Flash too much for words, why not dress up as the Flash? She could literally become the thing she loved.

This is Halloween.

God, she loved this holiday.

🎃🎃🎃

Charlotte had spent her whole afternoon trying to estimate what each member would go as. Maybe Teddy as John Lennon? She could see that. Circular glasses, bowl-shaped hair. Maybe Malcolm as Thor or something. Goodness.  She'd love to see that. Or, wait — Shane as John Cena. Charlotte would cry. Man, Charlotte loved this holiday so much.

As for her, she was being a character from a movie whom she'd loved ever since she was little. It was one of her absolute favorite movies.

Her mom helped her spray her hair midnight black (at least, as black as they could get it) after they straightened it. Neat bangs swiped the side of her forehead. She had decked herself out in Red and black and yellow nylon/spandex clothes, black gloves adorning her hands. A black cloth was slipped over her eyes, and she felt like a super badass. A major badass. She felt . . . Like Violet Parr.

And that was the beauty of Halloween, she supposed.

It was five o'clock, about time for Teddy, Shane, and Malcolm to show up.  She couldn't hold her excitement, her hands shook as she held the orange candy bowl filled to the brim. She hoped they liked her costume. She hoped the actually did dress up. And try. She had heard Shane went all out, and apparently his outfits were hilarious. Teddy didn't do Halloween anymore, apparently, for some strange reason.

Ding.

Charlotte's heart beat as if spiders had crawled across her lap.  She adjusted the thin mask on her face and headed downstairs.

Teddy's car seemed to be outside, so then that must mean —

He was here.

🎃🎃🎃

TEDDY WAS FULLY regretting his choice in costume.

The material was too tight and too scratchy on his skin. His hair was flattened down, and he could barely see. This was the only costume he would wear, and now he was regretting wearing a costume at all.

He rang the doorbell weakly, cringing, waiting for her reaction.

"Coming!" he heard her floaty voice call out breathlessly. Aw, damnit.

The door flew open the moment he was going to turn back. Teddy froze in his tracks and grimaced . . . But, of course, she couldn't see the twitch of his eye and his drooping lips because of his costume.

She was silent at first. Violet Parr, he recognized. She made a good fit for her. It was strange to see Charlie with black hair, her face as pale as sand. Her black-gloved hands were stuck by her side, her lips (smothered in a pinkish lipstick) were rounded, with her jaw dropped.

He sighed, rolling his eyes, an eyebrow sagging on his forehead (but, of course, she couldn't see that because of the damned blue and red mask). "Your friendly neighborhood . . . "

"You did not."

"I did."

"You . . . "

"Thirty bucks at Savers."

He could barely make out her facial expressions through the mesh covering his face. She sounded excited, which was good. He thought he had accomplished World's Biggest Nerd Costume with it, but if she liked it, then he guessed it was okay.

Malcolm's car startled them as he rushed down the street.

Theodore could not stress how stupid he looked, a gangly teenage boy in a stretchy, skin-tight, superhero costume.

(He kind of liked it, but you didn't hear it from him.)

🎃🎃🎃

MALCOLM THOUGHT HIS Halloween costume was pretty good.

It was fairly easy, all he needed was sunglasses, a snazzy coat, a fedora of sorts, a thick mustache that only trailed straight above his top lip, and a saxophone.

Duke Silver, also known as Ron Swanson,  also known as the lover of America and meat with a secret love for jazz on Parks and Recreation.

Malcolm thought he pulled it off pretty well. He had to phone a couple guys in order to borrow a saxaphone, but all was good.

When he knocked on the door to the bookstore, he did not expect Violet Parr and Spider-Man.

They didn't seem to expect Duke Silver either.

"Holy shit man," blinked Spider-Man.  "How in the world . . . "

"Wow. And I thought Teddy's costume was good," Charlotte said. "Was I wrong, am I right?" Theodore pinched her on the arm with a little frown.

"Shane's not here yet?"

"Nah, he's coming soon."

"Is that his car?"

"God, I'm scared to see what he does."

"We all are, Charlotte."

🎃🎃🎃

HE COULDN'T HIDE the grin bouncing off of his face.

He was a genius. He ran all of the possibilities through his head, but nothing, nothing sounded better than this. He laughed at this character for ages. He quoted this character, too. Everyone did.

Knock.

Shane could tell they were tentative towards opening the door for him. He saw Teddy peek through the small crack in the door. The door swung open.

"What the heck?" Charlotte angrily muttered. "I thought Malcolm said you went all out? This isn't all out!"

"What are you even supposed to be, anyways?" Teddy spoke up. That was when Malcolm started cracking up.

A red, collared t-shirt adorned his chest, he tried to wear no expression, and he wore, of course . . . khakis.

"Are you kidding me?" Charlotte blandly retorted, the pieces clicking.

"Jake," mumbled Teddy, not looking amused. "Jake—"

"—from State Farm," Shane grinned. "Uhh, khakis. How's it look?"

Shane never saw the Charlotte and Teddy look extremely emotionally exhausted until that moment.

🎃🎃🎃

AS IT TURNS out, the four of them are horrendous at handing out candy to kids, one of the problems being that they are most of it before the kids even arrived. Mrs. Jackson, Spencer, and Skylar eventually took over.

Shane then convinced them all to grab sacks or pillowcases, and they all headed down the street, even though they did seem a little old for Halloween.

But hanging out with friends and just laughing at ridiculous costumes and adventuring outside, seeing all of the hilarious costumes others had on as well was basically what Halloween was. Who cared what the age limit was, supposedly?

You felt a rush as you wandered into the dark night, clutching your wizarding wand and such, feeling invincible. Why would you want to grow up so fast? As long as a smile stayed on your face, that was Halloween.

(It also didn't hurt that you got free candy.)
