The Black Squall (a shanty)
We set our sails a week ago
to head to distant shores,
across the dark green churning main,
amidst the sea-wind's roars.
Today our fair sky changed its face,
from blue to darkened brown.
We saw the storm approaching,
intent to take us down.
(chorus)
Hey Oh, the bounding main,
she wants our souls some day,
hey Oh, the deep blue sea,
expects us all to pay.
We sailor boys all know this true,
we know it is our fate,
we only hope we live this day
and hope the sea shall wait.
Now deep within the chocolate sky,
the black squall heads our way,
you can feel it in your blood and bone
and taste it in the spray.
The following sea had pushed us,
while the current pulled us in,
as the demon storm grew closer
and our ship was tossed by wind.
Now ever closer are we drawn
towards the looming wall aglow,
where lightning's born and darkness dwells,
a realm we cannot know.
(chorus)
Hey Oh,the bounding main,
she wants our souls some day,
hey Oh, the deep blue sea,
expects us all to pay.
We sailor boys all know this true,
we know it is our fate,
we only hope we live this day,
and hope the sea shall wait.
Our furious sails must now be trimmed
to keep our ship aright,
while angry clouds block out the sun
and turn our day to night.
The ship is ravaged by the seas,
within this churning hell,
and we are tossed toward the abyss
with each progressive swell.
The deck planks groan and mast booms creak,
our hull begins to crack,
each wave now stabs our dying ship,
there is no heading back.
The sea, no longer satisfied
with creatures scaled and finned,
now makes its way past broken seals
and soon comes rushing in.
(chorus)
Hey Oh, the bounding main,
she wants our souls some day,
hey Oh, the deep blue sea,
expects us all to pay.
We sailor boys all know this true
we know it is our fate
we only hope we live this day
and hope the sea shall wait.
Then, as our ship starts going down
and grown men start to pray,
the wind desists and sea goes calm,
as the squall moves on its way.
Our ship sits bruised and bleeding
on a newly placid main,
and every man begins his work,
that we may sail again.
Each sailor smiles in silent grace
knowing we have paid our fee
and lived against the odds this day,
for no man owns the sea.
(chorus)
Hey Oh, the bounding main,
she wants our souls some day,
hey Oh, the deep blue sea,
expects us all to pay.
We sailor boys all know this true
we know it is our fate,
we only hope we live this day,
and hope the sea shall wait.
