02. SERENDIPITY

—A WALK IN RITOU WAS ALWAYS EVENTFUL. Whether it be something as trivial as sakura petals descending to the earth or the people that minded their own business, the Yashiro Commissioner would always find something eye-catching. On lucky days, he would stumble upon the infamous crimson oni ; trying his hand on a round of those cards and it was surprising how much stress it took from his shoulders.
Today, too, was one of those fortunate days. Kamisato Ayato watched silently from a distance as his oni friend quarrelled with children not even half his size. It was stupid, frankly, exactly what was humourous about it.
“What a scenery, right?”
Like an intruder to his brief solitude, he found you stood right beside him. Strange, how did he not feel your presence? His surprise was quite masked although, he briefly turned his attention ahead as if confirming your word and by the time he turned back to you, you were already smiling in wonder.
“Inazuma is quite nothing like anything I've seen yet. Such a blend of nature, I must admit, I regret not coming here sooner.” in such proximity, Ayato realized just how soft and clear your voice was. He almost completely zoned out listening to it.
But Kamisato Ayato is Kamisato Ayato, for he regained his composure just as quickly as he lost it. “It's only the beginning, I'd say then.”
Your giggle was ephemeral, but saccharine enough. “I'm [Y/N], pleased to meet you, mister...?”
“Kamisato Ayato. Delighted to meet your acquaintance.” by the contagiousness of your smile, he could not stop the one spreading across his visage, too.
You hummed absentmindedly, gaze suddenly set ahead where a bulky man with horns was holding something away from a kids reach—candy you presumed. He'd been at that for half an hour now, you wondered if teasing children was his hobby.
“I must admit, you were giving me quite the stare yesterday, Sir Kamisato.” you teased lightly, not appearing offended in slight so the Commissioner replied,
“It was hard not to. You don't really meet a songbird everyday.”
You played it cool, “Songbird? Such high praise. Unfortunately, I am but a mere mortal.”
His lavender eyes looked down at you, although your face did not lose the remnants of a nonchalant smile, your burning ears slightly betrayed your words.
So easily flustered, hm.
Kamisato Ayato unknowingly thought fondly. You're like the plot of a mystery light novel from the Yae Publishing house, slowly unfolding with trips and turns and trickery sprinkled everywhere. He jokingly told himself to be careful lest he should get a little too invested.
“Now that's hard to believe. I thought you got separated from your flock and ended up at her excellency's gates. Not that I mind, I'd say it was a blessing.”
Now, this time, you couldn't tell whether he was heartily joking or not. But you were also not one to surrender, letting out a fake gasp you said, “How could you tell? You don't know how much worried I've been! How will I return home?” you place your palm on your right cheek to amplify the theatrics.
“Fear not, you have the Yashiro Commissioner by your side. I'll make sure you return to them by any cost.” and Ayato followed suite with a hand placed atop his heart, a serious expression afterwards.
Like teenagers over small jests, you two shared a much hearty laugh definitely not catching the attention of nearby residents who but passed by in surprise.
Kamisato Ayato was the first to gather himself and then ever so charmingly, he said, “Welcome to Inazuma, dear Songbird.”
It was your turn to be caught off guard, pupils ever so dilating before your lashes obscured that sight. The smile Ayato was so accustomed to by now made itself apparent once more.
“Take care of me well then, herr
charmuer.”
