THREE MONTHS AFTER MYSTERIOUSLY GIVING BIRTH TO A BABY, a scared mother left her child at a fire station in the middle of the night. This young mother, at only sixteen, didn't know the first thing about raising a child and believed that her daughter deserved better than what she could give her. She kissed her baby girl on the head and left before anyone would know what she had just done. And the sixteen-year-old never looked back. Though, over the years, her heart did long to know where her daughter had ended up.

The firefighters working at Station 17 found the baby girl shortly after hearing her small cries. They contacted the authorities as well as child services and reported their discovery, and someone came down to take the child away. The baby girl, with no name, was placed in the foster system. A week later, she was adopted by two loving men, Oscar Torres and Ethan Kepp, who wanted to have a family of their own. They named her Sophie after Ethan's late mother.

Sophie grew up loved by her two fathers. She was their pride and joy, and they made sure to smother their little girl with love every chance they got, wanting her to know just how she meant to them. Sophie loved every aspect of her life growing up, and wouldn't change a thing about it, even if she was given the chance to do so. But her happiness came to an end when they decided to go on a family vacation before school started and were in a fatal car accident. While Oscar died on impact, Ethan survived another three days after undergoing multiple surgeries. He breathed long enough to ensure the safety and survival of their daughter before joining his partner in the afterlife.

Upon the deaths of her fathers, Sophie was sent to live with her only living relative left. She had spent countless of weekends with her Grandma Judith during the summer while growing up, but to wake up under her roof every day was a whole new experience. It was hard for Sophie to adjust to the sudden changes in her life, but as time went on, things gradually went back to normal, and both she and her grandmother lived happily together. But just when Sophie was happy again, everything came crashing down around her, for it wasn't long before her grandmother passed away too.

Sophie continued living within her grandmother's home, even after she passed away. Only eighteen at the time, she didn't want to move again. She didn't want to leave another life behind, only to start over again. Instead, she worked hard to make a living for herself, eventually becoming a kindergarten teacher at a local school in the city. And while she didn't have many friends or anyone special in her life to make her happy, her work and feline friend named Patsy was all she needed in life to make her smile.

But soon, that was going to change.

While walking home from the diner late one evening, she had found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Men followed her, chasing her down a dark alley. They intended to rob her, violate her, but thankfully someone heard her cries and came to the rescue. A shadow with knives that glistened against the pale moonlight had saved her life that night. She never saw his face, for it was too dark, but when their eyes connected even for the briefest of moments, Sophie Torres-Kepp knew that Diego Hargreeves was going to change her life forever.

So, maybe she wasn't in the wrong place at the wrong time, after all.

Maybe, just maybe, their paths were always meant to cross like this. After all, fate works in mysterious ways.
