Chapter Thirteen- The Truth

Noelle took a deep breath, following her dad and uncle into the Siberian bunker, her heart pounding. This was her absolute worst nightmare, and she never in the name of heaven dreamed that she would return to that accursed place, much less voluntarily. Her dad looked back as they reached the door, seeing the haunted look in her eyes.

"You can go back if it's too much for you." He said weakly, and she shook her head, refusing to open her mouth. The place smelled musty, and almost like vomit, and she was afraid she would add to that if she dared open her mouth. They ventured further into the compound, all three of them on edge. Her head shot up when she heard a small thump in one of the corridors connected to that one, and she slowly raised her rifle, her thumb poised on the trigger. She crouched behind her uncle, feeling her dad's presence behind her, and feeling safer than she ever had in that place. Quite frankly, she didn't feel safe there, but she knew that someone finally had her back there. She nearly fired off a round when Tony forced the metal doors open, but managed to hold off as Tony and Steve shared a glance, and conversed softly for a moment. Then Tony looked at them, and she ducked further behind her father.

"Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop . . . " Steve signaled to them, and they both slowly lowered their rifles. Despite her dad behind her, she couldn't help but feel like they were being followed. They reached another crossroad in the halls, and her heart dropped into her stomach. Steve kicked open the door, and she nearly retched when she saw what was in the room.

"No...." She breathed, barely audibly, and then felt her dad's shoulder brush against hers. The chair. The same dreaded chair where she had first lost her memory, where both she and her father had been ripped from their own minds.

"I've got one heat signature." Tony said, and it finally clicked to her that she and her dad were on the opposite side of the room from him and Steve. Noelle looked up, gasping softly when she recognized the glass capsules, bathed from the inside with yellow light, and each containing a different person.... The other six Winter Soldiers. Suddenly, a speaker crackled to life, and an oily, Russian-laced voice poured out, filling her ears.

"If it is any consolation to you, they died in their sleep. Do you think I was really trying to allow there to be more of you?" Her legs nearly gave out in relief, and she sucked in a sharp breath, and she saw her dad's arm fly back towards her.

"What the h***?" Her dad asked softly, and Steve let his shield fly as the lights in the case housing Zemo turned on, silhouetting the man.

"I'm grateful to them, though. They brought you back here. And Captain, please. That won't work. The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets." Tony snorted.

"I could beat that." Zemo chuckled slightly, shaking his head.

"I suppose...Given time, I'm sure you could. But then...You would never know why you came." Noelle took a deep breath, finally speaking up.

"So, you killed innocent people in Vienna just so that we would come here?" She asked, her voice shaking. He laughed, looking at her.

"I thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized . . . there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw that can be seen on your person." Then Tony finally spoke up.

"Alright, d******. You're Sokovian. Is that what this s*** is about? "The unfamiliar man chuckled again.

"No. Sokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to h***. No. I'm here because I made a promise." Steve's eyes narrowed at Zemo, and she could almost see the gears turning in her uncle's mind.

"You lost someone?" He asked, and Zemo's face grew solemn. He pressed a button, clicking his tongue softly.

"I lost everyone. And so will you. An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumples from within? That's dead . . . forever."

Tony glared at the screen, his eyes narrowing dangerously.

"I know that road. What is this?" As Noelle watched the screen, memories came flooding back. A capsule......Unfamiliar people....... A dark road......An older man......and a woman begging for her life. She let out a sob, stumbling back into her father's arms.

"December......1991...Hydra.... experimented.... they sent me.... oh.... No, please! No!" She screamed, crumpling into the fetal position, her body shaking with silent sobs as the video played, showing the murder of Tony's parents. She forced herself to look up, out of the corner of her eye, confirming what her shattered memories had been telling her. Hydra had sent her back in time, and she, along with her father, had murdered Howard and Maria Stark on December 16, 1991, orphaning an adolescent Anthony Stark.

"Please...no..." She whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Her father forced the car off the road, crashing into a tree right beside where she stood. He returned, and Howard crawled out of the car, reaching for her.

"Help my wife. Please. Help." She ground her heel into his hand, snapping his wrist, and her father lifted him up by his hair, staring into his face.

"Sergeant Barnes?" He gasped, and Noelle headed towards a sobbing Maria. Bucky slammed his metal fist into Howard's face, and then slammed his face against the steering wheel, leaving him there. As he did that, Noelle reached into the car with her metal arm, strangling Maria. When the last bit of life finally faded from her body, Bucky turned, shooting the security camera out.

Tony turned to the three of them, his eyes blazing with fury.

"Did you know?" Steve nodded slowly.

"We knew. Noelle didn't. They did too good of a job with wiping that from her memory." He lunged at Bucky, and Steve tried to stop him.

"Get out of here!" Steve roared, and Noelle turned, taking off, tears blinding her. The sounds of fighting grew distant, but then Tony slammed into her, pinning her and her dad to the ground.

"Do you remember them?" He growled, and she nodded, tears pouring down her cheeks.

"I remember all of them." Her dad breathed, and it seemed that, in that moment, the rest of the fight in him simply vanished. Tony pressed down harder on her neck, starting to suffocate her, and used his blaster to destroy her metal arm, leaving sharp metal shards and loose wires in its place. Steve slammed into him, and she just barely managed to get away, stumbling down a hall and into the arms of someone else.

"Miss Barnes...forgive me." He whispered, and she looked up, gasping.

"T'Challa?" He nodded, beckoning to her, and she followed silently. He led her to the quinjet, where he left her to tend to her wounds, and returned with an unconscious Zemo. Moments later, Steve stumbled onto the jet with her dad, who was just barely conscious. The two of them collapsed to the floor beside her, and she curled into her dad's side, not even having energy left to cry. He wrapped his arm around her as they took off....leaving behind the only life they had ever known.
