The Easter Bunny

My kids are getting older, and I'll be the first to admit that I want to keep the Santa, Easter Bunny, and Tooth Fairy magic going for as long as I can.

Last year, my husband was in school for fifteen weeks. I wrote a little bit about that in Hurry Up and Wait, but it became too difficult to write about. Having three kids with virtually no break for fifteen weeks...well...a gal's bound to have her good days and bad.

Anyways, I fretted and fretted about the Easter Bunny. How was I supposed to hide eggs and supervise my children? Normally, either my husband or I corral the kids so the other can do the hiding, but that just wasn't going to happen.

On the Saturday night before Easter, the girls and I colored eggs while I tried to come up with an elaborate scheme to make the magic happen. Eventually, I came up with my plan.

I would hide the eggs in our backyard after the kiddoes were asleep.

Which is all fine and dandy except for the lizards. And the snakes. And the frogs. Okay. The snakes might be a slight exaggeration, but there have been some back there. But I braved those buggers.

I think I jumped each time I placed one of those candy-filled eggs in any spot I could find around our pool and in the lanai. Fortunately, the only enemy I encountered was a super-size mosquito named Sven. He was a real bloodsucker.

So...the next morning, the girls dig through their Easter baskets with glee and I put the dog outside so we could go to breakfast.

Of course, while we're eating our strawberry crepes, the girls are talking about the egghunt and how they can't wait to look for the eggs. And I'm smiling because I GOT THIS.

We get home and the girls grab their baskets and head outside. The dog rushes inside, his head hanging in shame.

Yep. The frickin' dog opened almost every one of the eggs and ate the candy.

I played it cool though, because what's a mom to do? They...um...might have been worried all year that our dog might have attacked the Easter Bunny. They weren't so worried about the candy after that.

Just imagine how excited they'll be to know that the Easter Bunny is safe and sound.
