Little Ray of Sunshine

Narrator's POV

"How are you feeling, bud?" Stephen asked, crouched to Peter's height and straightening his little blue jacket.

"Ah!" He took in a deep breath. "I'm nervous." He said, opening and closing his fists.

Stephen smiled. "I think Tony over there is more nervous than you." He signaled his head toward Tony, who was pacing back and forth with his phone to his ear.

"Yes. I understand, but do you have advanced technology? What kind of science do you teach? What do you mean they're only in kinder garden?"

Stephen chuckled. "You'll be fine." He said.

"Thank you for walking me to school." Peter said. "Uncle Ben was suppose to, but he's away on a trip." A frown formed on his lips, and his head fell.

"Hey." Stephen cupped his chin and picked his head up.

Tears were already flowing out of Peter's eyes.

"I know you miss him." Stephen said. "But he'll be back, I promise." He wiped Peter's tears away with his thumbs.

"Mhm." Peter nodded, sniffling.

Stephen kissed Peter's forehead. He stood up. "Tony, come on. We're gonna make Peter late for school. We're walking, remember?"

"Okay, just hold on..." Tony said, typing into his phone.

"What are you doing?" Stephen asked.

"Reading reviews on the school he's attending." Tony said. "I don't want him going somewhere where they're going to teach him what a circle is when he already knows how to multiply two digit numbers."

"Tony. It's kindergarten." Stephen said. "Of course their gonna teach them that."

"He could teach the class himself." Tony said. "Maybe we should for another schoo-"

"Come on." Stephen pulled Tony along with them.

"Ready?" Stephen asked Peter, who was holding on to one of Stephen's hands and Tony's hand.

They were making their way to school.

"Yes." Peter smiled.

"Up you go."

They swung him gently.

"Yay!" Peter smiled and enjoyed the little time he was in the air before coming back down.

Tony was still on his phone, typing.

"That was fun." Peter said, smiling at Stephen.

"It was." Stephen nodded.

Peter looked at Tony, who looked very busy.

Stephen sighed. "Tony, what are you doing now?" He asked.

"I'm looking for a better, more advanced school for Peter." Tony said.

"Give this school a shot." Stephen said. "Maybe being around children his age, doing things children his age do will do him some good." Stephen said. "All he knows is math and physics and science. It doesn't help you taking him down to your shop and depriving him from fun things children normally do."

"Oh, like what?" Tony asked.

"Drawing, coloring. Doing jigsaw puzzles." Stephen said.

"I let him do puzzles." Tony said.

"Yeah. Sudoku on the back of the news paper doesn't count." Stephen said.

"But he likes it." Tony said. "It's not bad if he likes it."

"What about coloring? Getting in touch with his creative side? At his age, creativity is very important." Stephen said.

"He helps me out with blue prints." Tony said.

Stephen rolled his eyes, letting go of Peter and watching him interact with Tony on his own.

Peter held onto Tony, watching as he slowly wrapped his fingers around one of Tony's fingers.

"Your fingers are big." Peter told him.

"Tell me something Stephen doesn't already know." Tony said, chuckling quietly to himself.

It took Stephen a few moments to catch on.

He shot a glance at Tony, cheeks flushed red. "Tony, why would you say that?" He stopped walking.

Peter and Tony kept walking.

"Anthony I demand answers!" He called a little distance away.

Tony chuckled, keeping his eyes on his phone.

"Well, what do you think?" Stephen asked, crouching down next to Peter as they both looked out at children playing in the playground.

"It looks..." Peter watched the other children. He looked at Stephen. "What if they don't like me?"

Stephen smiled at him. "Nonsense." He fixed a small curl that fell down on Peter's face. "They're gonna love you."

"And if they don't?" Peter asked.

"Trust me, they will." Stephen smiled at him.

Tony smiled at Peter. "Yeah, who's not gonna love a small little brat like you?" He removed Peter's hat and messed up his caramel curls before putting the hat over Peter's head, pushing it down over his eyes.

Peter laughed, removing the hat. He looked up at his current guardians. "You'll come back and get me right? You won't forget me?"

"What was your name again?" Tony asked, smiling at Peter.

Peter smiled. "Oh, stop." He laughed, but stopped and looked up at Stephen and Tony. "But you won't right?"

"How could we?" Stephen asked, leaning forward and kissing Peter's cheek.

Peter laughed.

"I put Lamby in your bag, just in case." Stephen said, straightening Peter's little coat up.

Peter looked up at Stephen once he was done helping him with his coat.

Stephen smiled at him.

"Ngh!" Peter wrapped his arms around Stephen unexpectedly.

"Oh." Stephen was a little surprised, but slowly embraced Peter.

Tony looked down at them, smiling.

"Thank you." Peter said. "You're the best." He said.

Stephen smiled, kissing Peter's cheek. "Everything will be alright."

A bell rang.

Peter pulled away, looking at his guardians. "I won't forget you." He said.

"I hope not." Tony said.

"I love you." Peter said, walking into the campus.

"Love ya too, kid." Tony waved at Peter.

Stephen stood up, waving at him. "Have a good day, Peter." He said.

Peter turned his back to them, walking into the campus, taking in a deep breath.

"You must be Peter." Said a woman in a yellow dress, she seemed really nice.

She was pretty.

Peter gulped. "Yes ma'am. I-I am."

She crouched down to his height. "Nice to meet you Peter, I'm Mrs. Green." She said, offering him a hand.

Peter shook her hand. "I'm Peter." He said.

"Come. I'll show you to the rest of the class." She took him by the hand and guided him to an open red door.

They came into a classroom full of color.

There were finger paintings on the walls, cubbies full of backpacks, small round tables with colorful plastic desks, the windows had paper cut outs hanging on them, and there were toy airplanes and hot balloons hanging from the ceiling.

On the wall connected to the door was a green chalkboard with the name Mrs. Green written on it in very neat handwriting.

She cleared her throat. "Class, class." She clapped.

"Yes? Yes?" All the little heads turned to her, clapping. Then they all turned to Peter.

"We have a new student." She said, looking down at Peter. "Go on, tell them your name."

Peter looked at everyone looking at him. He swallowed, his heart pounding in his chest. He took in a deep breath. "H-Hi. My name is Peter." He said.

"Hi, Peter." Everyone said.

"Why don't you tell us something about yourself Peter?" Mrs. Green asked.

Peter looked at her, then at the class. "Um...I like red toy cars." He said.

"Oh, Harry over there likes toy cars." She pointed at boy wearing a purple shirt. "Why don't you sit with his table?" She asked. "I'm sure he won't mind."

"No." Harry said. "You can sit with us." He smiled at Peter.

Peter went over to Harry's table. "Thank you." He said shyly.

"I'm Harry." Harry said. "That's Emery, that's Jackson, and that's Eli." He said, pointing at the boy and two girls at his table.

"I like astronauts." Eli said. "I want to be one when I grow up."

"I like Jell-O." Emery said.

"And I like bugs." Jackson said. "Especially beetles." He took out a bug from his pocket.

"Ew." Everyone laughed at his table.

Peter smiled.

He had found his people.
