It's Hard
Narrator's POV
Tony sat on the couch, reading a newspaper while Peter was off doing something.
Stephen was at work, and it wasn't long til he returned.
They had planned a cookout with May today being the first day of summer and all.
An alarm went off on Tony's phone.
Check on Squirt
Tony looked around, not seeing Peter. "Hey, Squirt." He called.
There was no answer.
"Pete." Tony stood up from the couch, walking into the living room, where Peter was playing a while ago.
Peter wasn't there.
"Peter, come on." Tony said. "This isn't funny." He looked around. "You know how I feel about hide and seek." Tony searched in the kitchen, inside the cabinets, inside the pantry.
Nothing.
"Peter." He called.
There was a sound coming from upstairs.
Stumbling and fast footsteps.
"Peter?" Tony asked, walking to the staircase.
"Ah!" Peter yelped.
"Peter!" Tony called, going upstairs. He enabled a blaster over his hand. "Peter. I'm coming." He raced upstairs. "Where are you?" He looked around at the many rooms of the house.
"In here." Peter called from the bathroom.
"Hold on, I'm- What the?" Tony struggled against the doorknob.
It was locked.
"It's okay. Nothing's wrong." Peter said.
"Peter." He called. "Peter, what's going on in there?" He asked. "Let me in. Come on."
"It's okay. I'm okay." Peter said from the other side.
"If you don't open this door this instant, I'm gonna blast it down." Tony said.
"No, it's okay. You don't need to worry about it." Peter said.
"Peter if you don't open this door on the count of three..." Tony warmed.
"No, it's-"
"One." Tony counted.
"I'm fine."
"Two."
"Wait-"
"Thre-"
-click-
Tony opened the door in a hurry. "Peter, are you-" He looked down at Peter, who was standing on a stool in front of the sink, facing him.
Peter didn't say anything.
There was marker on his face in the shape of Tony's or Stephen's facial hair.
Tony couldn't really tell. "Pete, what did you-"
"Please don't be mad!" Peter said, tears forming in his eyes.
Tony scoffed. "I'm not mad." He said.
Peter looked at him. "You're not?"
"No." Tony said.
"Ngh!" Peter ran up to Tony and wrapped his arms around his legs.
Tony laughed, holding him, but then picking him up. "What were you doin'?"
"I wanted to be like you." Peter said.
Tony smiled. "Well, that's really good for someone your age." He said, tickling Peter's neck.
Peter giggled.
"C'm on. Let's take this off before Stephen gets-" Tony wiped his thumb over the marker.
It didn't come off.
"What did you use to draw this?" Tony asked.
Peter showed him the marker he'd use.
Sharpie
Tony looked at Peter. "Oh, Peter. What did you do?" He looked around, for something wipe it off with. He opened the medicine box behind the mirror, looking for rubbing alcohol. "Here." He set Peter down on the sink. "This should do it." He damped a little bit of the alcohol in some toilet paper and wiped in on Peter's chin.
It wasn't doing anything.
"Ah!" Tony yelped.
"Are we gonna get in trouble?" Peter asked.
"No. No." Tony said. "It's okay. Stephen's not h-"
"Tony, I'm back." Stephen's voice came from downstairs.
"Ah!" Tony yelped.
"Tony?" Stephen asked. "Tony, where are you?"
"Shh..." Tony held a finger up to his lips, telling Peter to stay quiet, but Peter spoke too soon.
"We're up here!" Peter called.
"Peter!" Tony whispered shouted.
"Up where?" Stephen asked, coming up the stairs.
"Sh!" Tony placed a hand over Peter's mouth.
"Tony?" Stephen called. "Peter, where are you?"
"We're in here, Honey." Tony called from the bathroom.
"What are you doing in there?" Stephen asked, wriggling the doorknob.
It was locked.
"And why is the door locked?" He asked.
"Um...we were..." Tony looked around. "...I was...Peter and I..."
"We were playing." Peter said.
"Playing?" Stephen asked. "Playing what?" Stephen wriggled the doorknob. "Tony, open the door."
"Just a minute." He said, looking around for something else to get the marker off.
"Tony, this isn't funny." Stephen said. "Peter, are you okay?"
"Yes. I'm okay." Peter said.
Tony knocked things down from the medicine cabinet.
"Tony. Tony, what's going on?" Stephen asked.
"Nothing." Tony said. "I just...Peter, he..." He found some disinfectant wipes.
They didn't work either.
"I'm opening the door." Stephen said.
"No, no, no! Wait!" Tony said, an idea popping in his head.
"Tony, stop messing around. I'm opening the do-"
"Hi, Honey." Tony said, opening the door.
Stephen looked at Tony, holding Peter in his arms.
The two were wearing Ironman masks.
"What is going on?" Stephen asked.
"We're super heroes." Tony said.
"Yeah." Peter said.
"Super heroes never rest." Tony said. "Isn't that right, Pete?"
"Yeah." Peter said.
"Okay..." Stephen raised a brow. "Then what was all-"
"Peter had an accident." Tony said.
"You did?" Stephen asked Peter.
"Yes." Peter said. "Um...I fell and...um..."
"Scraped his knee." Tony said.
"Scraped your knee?" Stephen asked. "Let me look at it." He reached for Peter.
"No!" Tony pulled Peter away from Stephen.
Stephen pulled back.
"Um... I already mended it." Tony said. "I took care of it, you have nothing to worry about." He said, slowly walking past Stephen, to the staircase and to the stairs. "Now, we'll be outside if you-"
"What happened?" Stephen appeared downstairs, inches away from Tony.
"Ah!" Tony yelped. "Nothing!" He said. "We just-"
Stephen pressed the back of Tony's helmet, making the helmet disable, then he pulled Peter's mask off, revealing the marker. "Ah!" Stephen gasped.
"Ta-da?" Tony said.
"Oh my..." He looked at Peter. "Is that...marker?" He looked at Tony. "Do you have any idea what chemicals they put into those things?"
"I-I..." Tony stammered.
"It wasn't Papa's fault." Peter said.
Tony and Stephen both looked at him.
"I did it." Peter said. "I drew it on my face because I wanted to be like you and Papa."
"Oh, Peter-"
"I'm sorry." Peter said.
Stephen exhaled. "Oh, Peter." He said, taking Peter from Tony. "It's okay. I wasn't all that mad."
Peter looked at him. "You weren't?" He asked.
"No. It's actually kinda sweet." He said.
"Do you forgive me?" Peter asked.
"Of course I do." Stephen said.
Peter smiled. "Thank you, Daddy." He hugged Stephen.
Stephen smiled at Peter, then looked at Tony, who was giving him a sad expression. Stephen's smile dropped. "Listen bud..."
Peter pulled away and looked at Stephen.
Stephen put him down. "There's something we've been meaning to tell you..."
Tony walked over to Stephen, putting a hand on his shoulder.
Stephen sighed, his heart pounding hard and fast.
Not from excitement, but from sadness.
"We're not..." Stephen bit his lip.
Tony looked at him, seeing how hard this was for Stephen. He looked at Peter. "What Stephen's trying to say..." He sighed.
This would surely break Peter's heart.
"..is that, we're not your dads." Tony said.
"But I thought-"
"I know kid." Tony said.
Peter's eyes filled with tears, his head dropping.
Stephen looked down at him, crouching down. He cupped Peter's chin and lifted his head. "Hey..." He said.
Peter looked at him through teary eyes.
"But that doesn't mean we don't love you." Stephen said. "You'll always be in our hearts." He said, tears forming in his eyes as well.
Peter wrapped his arms around Stephen, embracing him. "Thank you Dr. Strange." He sniffled.
"You're welcome." Stephen hugged him back, forming a broken smile, closing his teary eyes, letting a tear to roll down his cheek. He looked up at Tony.
Tony gave him a small smile. "It's gonna be okay." He whispered.
Stephen nodded, sniffling and holding Peter close.
