Chapter 33

When Dream and Papyrus made it back to the Swap house they tried to enter as quietly as possible as to not disturb the unconscious skeletons on both of their shoulders as well as the other occupants in the house. However, the blowing of cold wind outside did nothing to help this task as the wind pushed the door wide open as soon as Dream turned the doorknob. The door hit the wall with a loud  SMACK, effectively knocking off painted portraits that decorated the wall and sent them to the ground, shattering the glass on them. Dream and Papyrus rushed into the house before more snow could fill the entryway, and as Papyrus was the last one in he used his foot to force the door closed.

After laying the unconscious Fresh and Error on the couch, Dream and Papyrus crumpled to the ground, exhausted and cold from being outside for so long with extra weight on their shoulders. Papyrus looked like he was ready to pass out, but Dream still had too much on his mind to even close his eyes. Letting out a long sigh, Dream stood up and stretched his body out before looking over at his friend.

"Actually Papyrus , go ahead and get some rest upstairs. It'll be easier on everyone to just keep these two here."

Papyrus looked like he wanted to object, but with his lack of energy the only answer he gave was a small nod before standing himself up and dragging himself up the stairs to the room he shared with his brother. Before he could open the door, Dream caught his attention once again.

"Oh, and Papyrus? If he is sleeping, please wake your brother up and send him down here."

Papyrus nodded again as he opened the door then quietly closed it behind him. As Dream waited, he took it to himself to clean up the broken pieces of glass left on the ground. Carefully, Dream picked the glass piece by piece, mindful not to cut his hand or leave a shard behind. Every few seconds Dream would glance over at the couch, making sure the two were still asleep and not at each others throats again. A deep sigh left his mouth as he walked into the kitchen to dispose of the glass shards.

"What did I do to deserve this?"

Dream muttered to himself as he leaned against the kitchen sink, his  golden eyes focusing on the small drops of water leaking from the faucet. His voice was so soft and quiet, afraid that if it was any louder he would wake the two in the other room.

"Everything is too much. I can't take it anymore..."

The grip Dream had on the sink rail tightened slightly with every second, his form beginning to tremble out of anger, and sadness. For as long as he could remember, Dream always knew that as his role as the Guardian of Dreams, it was his sacred duty to protect the dreams and hope of every living being. If something ever went wrong, or evil's presence took over, then it was immediately his fault, no discussion needed. People looked to him for hope when they had none of their own, they looked to him for the answers, the solution, anything. But of course, Dream didn't couldn't give them what they wanted, and that only made people angry and blame him for everything.

However, when the blame was pinned on him for something he had no control of, did he ever get mad? Of course not, he was never like that . Was it unfair that so much was put on his shoulders the second he came into existence? Possibly, but when was life fair. Was it ever going to get easier for him? Definitely not .He's always done his job the best he could, hasn't he? For years, no, Centuries , Dream has done more than anyone else he knows to keep the innocent people and monsters alike safe. No one else had such a responsibility.

...Except for one...

"I'm so stupid...If only I listened to him...."

Small tears slid down his cheeks, dripping into the sink with a small plip. His lower lip trembled as he bit into hit, trying his best to hold back his sobs. Dreams golden orbs shone with falling tears as the pressure of his emotions got the better of him. The sound of his own sobs and the small drips of tears filled the room, so Dream didn't hear the footsteps coming towards him.

When he felt a gentle, skeleton hand rest on his shoulder he tensed for only a second, then quickly wiped his tears and choked back his last sob, bringing out his positive persona.

"Ah Sans. I'm glad you're here, I really need to talk to y-"

"Sorry to disappoint ya pretty boy, but I ain't Sans~"

Dreams eyes widened in panic, but he had no chance to react. The blade of a knife was pressed  to his neck in a matter of seconds as both of his hands were held behind his back with a strong grip. The blade was gently grazing against his neck, ready to plunge into him if needed. Dream stood completely still, eyes wide open and body stiff and un-moving. He took a deep breath before turning his head to look at the one holding him hostage. Golden pools met with black, empty sockets, streams of black tears dripping down his cheeks. A large, sinister smile was plastered on the monsters face, for he could see the fear in Dreams eyes. Despite the large pit in his stomach, Dream swallowed back his fear and spoke with as much confidence as he could.

"Hello Killer..."

"Aww how sweet of you to remember my name~.Now you know the drill, scream and someone dies."

Dream felt as a bead of sweat rolled down the side of his face, but he kept his head and spoke in a calm and quiet voice, keeping his threat and his friends in mind.

"Where's Sans?"

"Oh don't you worry, lil old Sansy is gonna be coming with us~"

Dream could feel his soul starting to race, more sweat collecting on his forehead. Why would the want Sans? Sure, he's the original Sans but what use would they have for him?

Unless....Oh no.....

"Killer...You don't have to do this...Come back to us, we can protect you from my brother and defeat him together!"

It was silent for a few seconds, only a few seconds before a deep, sad chuckle could be heard from the one behind him. Dream could feel the knife on his neck tremble as Killers grip on the handle began to shake. When Killer leaned closer to Dream, close enough to where his ear would be, his words came out in a whisper, as if afraid someone is listening.

"It's too late Dream, we both know this."

Before he had the chance to respond, A quick smack to the back of Dreams head sent him crumpling to the floor with a thud. Killer knelled next to the golden guardian, his expression unreadable as he almost gingerly picked up Dream with his arms carrying him under his legs and arms. Killer felt a searing pain on his neck, undoubtedly  the mark left behind by Nightmare, calling him back to the bastard himself. Killer looked back down at the skeleton in his arms, who was out cold with tear stains on his cheeks.

Dream was right, he really didn't deserve this, but what is done is done, and there's only one way to take everything back.

"Sorry Dream, but this is the only way. It's time for a Reset."
