Chapter 15
Bly was silent, scared to move, scared to make a sound. Any small movement could compromise his mission and it was one of the utmost importance. The door to the room suddenly opened and his eyes widened, looking to the doorway quickly.
"He's still asleep," Thorn whispered.
"Yeah, how long has it been," Bly whispered back. Thorn lifted his arm and checked his comm.
"Seven hours, this is unheard of," Thorn said with a soft smile as he ran his eyes over Fox's sleeping form. It was the most relaxed he's seen the Marshall Commander in years, no tightness in his face. He was curled up in Bly's arms on the bed, his head resting on the 327th Commander's chest.
"I feel like my muscles are going to lock up because I'm trying so hard not to move," Bly said, making Thorn snort.
"Don't worry, movement won't wake him up. It's loud noise or us shaking him. He's just had a problem with actually going to bed. There was always so much pressure on him to make sure all of us were safe and everything was in working order, he just barely slept. And on the off chance he does sleep, he usually sets an alarm for three hours," Thorn explained. Bly let out a breath of relief at that, relaxing his muscles and holding Fox closer.
"He was like that as cadets but I wasn't sure if he'd changed," Bly said quietly. He brushed Fox's hair back and watched fondly as his vod'ika curled tighter in his arms.
"He's still the same person Commander, he's just grown up and taken on big responsibilities," Thorn said. Bly sighed sadly and ran his fingers through Fox's hair gently. Thorn's comm flashed and he glanced down, gasping at what he saw. He rushed to the bed quickly and shook Fox firmly.
"Thorn! What are you doing," Bly said quickly but Fox had already awoken with a start. He looked around hastily before relaxing as he realised it was only Bly and Thorn in the room with him.
"What's go-."
"D'ika is awake," Thorn said, cutting him off. Fox's eyes widened and his heart skipped a beat.
"He's awake," he gasped as he quickly jumped off the bed.
"What's going on," Bly asked in confusion as Fox started hurriedly putting on his armour. Thorn glanced at Fox before turning back to Bly. Bly has been nothing but helpful the past couple of days and he's stuck by his word to look after Fox so far.
"Would you like to meet Fox's other ad'ika," he asked. This time it was Bly's turn to gasp in shock.
"Other? Fox, how many ad's do you have," Bly asked.
"Just two. But D'ika has been in a coma for the last month after his squad was caught in an explosion on patrol. He was the only one to survive but we haven't been certain if he'd ever wake up. I um, I've been trying to come to terms with the fact that he would likely march on. He needed a bacta tank and we definitely didn't have one," Fox said quietly. Bly's heart clenched as he was once again reminded of how badly the Guard had been treated, how they were abandoned.
"I would very much like to meet this D'ika, if you're okay with it," Bly said softly.
"You can come if you want," Fox said with a nod. He didn't really care, he just wanted to get to his ad'ika quickly.
"Is he going to be picturing different ways of killing me, like Thire," Bly asked and Thorn chuckled.
"No, he's a lot more calm than Thire is. He also sometimes struggles with authority figures so it's unlikely he will say anything bad to you," Fox said as he finished with his armour.
"What do you mean he has trouble with authority figures," Bly asked with a frown.
"You'll understand what I mean when you meet him. Now, come on," Fox said, leaving the room. The three Commanders moved quickly down the hall towards the medical bay.
"Oh, by the way Bly, Thire will already be there anyway," Fox said with a grin as the door slid open. Fox found Helix immediately and went over to him.
"We took him out of bacta about thirty minutes ago. Thire is with him now," Helix said, pointing to a bed at the far end of the room with the curtains drawn. Fox nodded and headed over to the bed, slipping past the curtains. Thire glanced up, but didn't move his head from where it was resting against his brothers. Fox smiled fondly at the sight. Thire was laid back on the bed, propped up slightly with his younger brother laying on top of him, back to chest. He let out a breath of relief and walked over to stop beside the bed.
"Good to see you awake Dogma," he said gently as he rested his hand down on the youngers. Dogma's eyes blinked open and landed on Fox, a small smile tugging at his lips.
"Buir," he whispered, his voice a little bit hoarse. Thire quickly grabbed a cup with a straw from the desk beside the bed, holding the straw out for Dogma to drink from to soothe his throat.
"I'm here ad'ika. You gave us quite the scare you know," Fox said quietly.
"Where are we," Dogma asked quietly once he finished drinking. He was beyond confused at where he was and what was going on. One minute he had felt intense heat and pain and the next he was cuddled up in his ori'vod's arms on a warm bed. Fox glanced at Thire and raised an eyebrow.
"He hasn't been awake for very long. I figured it would be best talking to you," Thire explained.
"First of all, before we get into the details, how are you feeling," Fox asked. Dogma went to answer before freezing and flinching back into Thire. Fox glanced to the side to see Thorn had stepped through the curtains with Bly in tow.
"Dogma, it's just Bly, he's the least annoying of the batch," Fox said, squeezing his hand gently in reassurance. Bly was shocked when he heard that name. He remembered it from a while back. Rex was telling them about Umbara and what happened there. Dogma, he was the one that shot the Jedi that betrayed them when Rex couldn't go through with it. He was set to be court-martialled despite Rex and Cody's best efforts to get him pardoned. They had assumed he was court martialled and unfortunately decommissioned for treason against a Jedi. No wonder he struggles with figures of authority after what he went through on Umbara. But how was he still alive? How did he end up here?
"Dogma, it's a pleasure to meet you," Bly said, smiling softly.
"Uh, a pleasure? I've never heard someone from the GAR say it's a pleasure to meet us," Dogma said in confusion, glancing at Fox for an explanation.
"A lot of things have changed since you were out. It's a lot to explain and I don't want to overwhelm you while you're already injured ad'ika," Fox said gently.
"Why don't we start off with where we are," Dogma asked. Right now we're in the medical bay on a cruiser above Coruscant," Fox said gently.
"I'm sorry, we're what," Dogma exclaimed.
"You're about to learn some pretty shocking things, so just bear with me please Ma," Fox said.
"Okay," Dogma said slowly.
"Hang in there vod'ika, we're all going to be okay," Thire whispered, nuzzling closer to Dogma for some added security.
"So it started when I was given a black out mission to execute ARC Trooper Fives-."
"Fives? What did Fives do? Buir, please tell me you didn't? Krell almost made me-."
"Udesii ad'ika. Fives is okay, promise. Apparently he uncovered some sort of plot about Palpatine so he told everyone Fives had tried to assassinate him and needed to be apprehended," Fox explained gently.
"What? That doesn't sound like Fives at all, he's a good vod. What happened to him," Dogma asked.
"Well, I shot him because I couldn't stop myself, but it was only in the shoulder so he survived. He was taken to the Jedi Temple and healed. Whatever plot he had uncovered must have been good because a few days ago the Jedi stormed the senate and ended up killing the shrivelled raisin," Fox said. Dogma's mouth opened and closed a few times as he tried to think of what to say. Fox waited, allowing him some time to process.
"Palpatine is dead," Dogma asked eventually.
"Well and truly," Thorn said with a nod. Dogma's eyes suddenly turned watery so Fox quickly cupped his face.
"Hey, what's wrong," he asked worriedly.
"H-He can't hurt you anymore," Dogma whispered as a tear slipped down his face.
"Oh Ma'ika," Fox gasped, delicately using his thumb to wipe the tear from the youngers face.
"He hurt you a lot Buir. I hated seeing all those bruises and scars when you came back from seeing him. Thire and I would always talk about it together," Dogma sniffled. Fox paused and glanced at Thire who was deliberately looking away before turning back to Dogma.
"I didn't know about that," he said with a sigh.
"We didn't want you to know. You would've been worried about us when you needed to be more worried about yourself," Thire said with a shrug. Bly smiled softly to himself, glad to see Fox had people around him who cared for a looked after him while his batchmates left him behind. He was saddened to hear more about the Chancellor's abuse though. Since the start of the war, the Chancellor was Fox's direct superior. Which means that he has been abusing and hurting Fox since the beginning of the war.
"It was nothing I couldn't handle, but yes, he's dead and can no longer hurt anyone," Fox said with a nod.
"Okay, so he's dead, that's great. But that doesn't explain why we're currently on a cruiser and not in the barracks. Like right now there's three out of four Commanders here. Shouldn't at least one of you be in the senate or the prisons," Dogma asked.
"I'll answer this speed run because otherwise this will take forever. Cody and Rex named Fox dar'vod for what happened with Fives and told their batch chat. No one cared to check on Fox except Wolffe who was a stubborn shabuir and caught us when Fox came back quite injured from the Chancellor for failing to kill Fives. I think we were all just so overwhelmed and stressed with everything going on and just wanted it to stop so we were pretty loose-lipped. So he found out 90% of things, got a small group of his men to bring us food and medical supplies, stuck around for like a week to try and look after us. Then palp-karker got offed and we went into panic mode in the senate. Wolffe must've told his General who told Bly's girlfriend who had both been recalled for a Jedi meeting and were nearby anyway. Next thing we know, the 104th and 327th are evacuating the entire Guard off Coruscant and into a cruiser and now here we are," Thorn explained quickly. Dogma blinked and slowly nodded his head as he processed the information.
"I'm a little confused," he said finally.
"Of which part? Thorn said a lot really quickly because he's an absolute di'kut," Thire said.
"Why are the GAR helping us," Dogma asked.
"I thought they hated us," he added quickly.
"Do, do you all think that? Do you all think we wouldn't care that you're all being abused and raped? That we wouldn't help you," Bly asked sadly, drawing all eyes to himself.
"It's not really that. We just know we don't get along at all and the entire GAR thinks of us as useless pencil pushers who never see a fight. It's highly likely they wouldn't have believed us. I don't even know if Commander Wolffe would have believed us, had he not seen the state Fox was in," Thire said.
"He would have, I am certain of that. Fox is his prudii, he would move the entire galaxy if he even heard the possibility of Fox being mistreated," Bly said quietly.
"They're helping us because they do actually still care about us, or at least some of them do. Wolffe didn't hesitate to help when he found out and neither did the Generals," Fox said.
"But you were named dar'vod," Dogma questioned quietly.
"Only by Cody, who was emotional at the time. Though that isn't an excuse," Bly said quickly.
"But what about Captain Rex," Dogma asked.
"Rex punched and almost killed Fox so he can go be bantha food," Thire scoffed and Dogma's eyes widened.
"Captain Rex did what," he gasped.
"It was an accident, he wasn't trying to kill me," Fox said, rolling his eyes at Thire's dramatics.
"He punched you willingly Fox, he wanted to hurt you. Just because he didn't think it would almost kill you, doesn't mean it was an accident," Thire said angrily.
"Rex was way out of line. He was hurting but that isn't an excuse, especially for what he did. I wasn't there at the time but Wolffe told me what had happened. Rex didn't want to hurt Fox as bad as he did, he was just angry and lashed out but your Buir was already injured at the time. Don't worry, when I next see Rex'ika, he's going to get a stern talking to," Bly explained.
"You're lucky you don't have any batchmates D'ika. You only need us," Thire said, brushing back Dogma's fringe gently.
"Thire," Fox scolded with a frown.
"What, it's true. We've both had batchmates attack us," Thire said.
"Wait what," Dogma said, trying to shift around to face Thire.
"Shh, I'm okay," Thire said gently, tightening his hold and pressing a light kiss to Dogma's cheek.
"Half of your batch doesn't like you Fox and my entire batch hates me," Thire spat, looking back up at Fox. Thorn clenched his hand angrily behind his back, vowing to cause hell for his ad'ika's batchmates for how they made him feel.
"Thire, that's no-."
"Anyway, it was just Cody and Rex but apparently they're now having second thoughts about everything," Thire said, cutting Fox off.
"So we're safe on this cruiser," Dogma asked.
"Yes, you're all safe here," Bly agreed immediately.
"How long is this for though? Surely it can't be permanent? What are we supposed to do when we get dumped back to the surface with the senate," Dogma asked worriedly. Fox quickly rubbed his thumb over the back of Dogma's hand to try and soothe him.
"That's not anything you need to worry about okay. You were just in a coma for a month, one we didn't know you would wake up from and you're still recovering. We are welcome here for as long as we need but obviously we will have to leave at some point. For now though, we're just resting and recovering," Fox said, squeezing Dogma's hand tightly.
"We're really safe," Dogma asked with a small voice.
"Yes ad'ika, we're safe," Fox said softly.
"That's a relief," Dogma said, letting out a long breath.
"It is. It's also a relief that you're going to be okay. I was so scared that you wouldn't pull through because we didn't have the necessary supplies," Fox said with a sigh as he leaned down and pressed his forehead to Dogma's. Dogma went lax against Thire as he relaxed into the safe feeling of a keldable from his Buir. It's the safest place in the world, curled in his ori'vod's arms, in a keldable from his Buir.
"I'm sorry," Dogma whispered.
"Don't be, it's not your fault. I'm just so glad you're okay," Fox said quietly. Dogma sniffled and quickly wrapped his arms around Fox, hugging him as tight as he could. Fox hugged him back just as tightly and Thire joined in as well. Fox only pulled away when a throat was cleared and he turned to Bly.
"What," he asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"He's here," Bly said, tapping his comm.
"Who's here," Fox asked in confusion. Bly didn't reply but his eyes darted briefly to Thire. Fox was confused for a couple more seconds before it dawned on him.
"Finally," he said with a clap, startling the two on the bed.
"D'ika, I'm so happy you're awake and recovering. Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum. Thorn will stay with you because right now I need Thire," Fox said.
"Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum," Dogma said with a soft smile while Thire frowned.
"Uh, why do you need me," Thire asked mistrustingly.
"Because I need to show you something," Fox said. Thire frowned but slipped out from under Dogma, knowing he needed to listen to Fox.
"You okay to keep Ma company," Fox asked Thorn.
"Yeah, just make sure someone records it on their HUD," Thorn said with a nod.
"I think Boost is," Bly said.
"Record what," Thire asked in confusion.
"You'll see. Come on, we don't want to miss it," Fox said, grabbing Thire's hand and dragging him after Bly as they left.
"Where will it be," Fox asked.
"The hangar, so we should probably hurry," Bly said. They both broke into a fast jog and Thire hurried to catch up as they darted through halls. They skidded to a stop outside the last door where a small group of 104th and 327th members had formed, Wolffe with them.
"You took your time. They're disembarking now, let's go," Wolffe said, opening the door as they all filed into the hangar. A small shuttle was landed in the middle of the hangar with 327th troopers bustling around it as the door dropped open. There were some other troopers moving around some crates and other things. Thire faltered slightly as he noticed Viper was amongst those working around the ship. He wasn't worried as Viper wasn't stupid enough to do something in front of the three Commanders, two of which were Marshall Commanders. But it was another reminder that his batch hated him and he'd barely talked to them since a couple of months after being stationed on Coruscant.
"I can't wait to watch Viper get his shebs kicked," Boost said. Thire glanced around in confusion but Fox tugged him forwards and the group settled by some crates. They were within hearing distance but it wasn't obvious they were eavesdropping on something.
"He's a shabuir, I've always wanted to watch him get knocked down a peg," someone from the 327th said.
"What's going on? What are they talking about," Thire asked, turning to Fox.
"Just watch," Fox said, turning Thire's head back. The people in the shuttle started leaving. It was mainly troopers of the 104th but Thire noticed a few in the 501st blue, a very familiar one at the front.
"B-Buir, what's going on? Wh-What's Jesse doing here," Thire asked in shock as his heart started racing. He and Jesse clashed a lot lately, Thire often having to arrest him at 79's despite having used to be close as cadets.
"Wolffe told him about what Viper did to do, though he deserved to know and have the chance to make things right. I dragged you here because you keep saying your entire batch hates you and I know that isn't true so I'm proving it to you. It's what you deserve," Fox said firmly. Thire wasn't sure what to say but he didn't need to say anything as a voice rang out through the hangar.
"VIPER!" Everyone in the hangar turned around and were very obviously watching as Jesse stormed toward Viper. Viper took off his helmet and grinned at Jesse.
"Jesse, my favourite vod'ika, to what do I owe the pl-." Viper's words were cut off as Jesse reached him and swung back, punching him right in the jaw and knocking him off his feet, his helmet clattering to the ground. Thire's jaw dropped open in shock as he watched. Clearly Jesse and Viper had some unresolved issues between themselves because Jesse was always Viper's favourite and they're close so there's no way Jesse would just punch him out of nowhere for no reason.
"What the kark Jesse! That's no way to treat your ori'vod," Viper spat as he stood and straightened out.
"You are not my ori'vod. No one who touches my vod'ika, who hurts my vod'ika, deserves to call themself an ori'vod," Jesse yelled. Thire froze at that. He couldn't possibl-. He doesn't mean it like th-. He can't mean what he thinks. Right?
"Seriously? That's what this is about? That pathetic reject deserv-." He was cut off as he was punched again but this time he only stumbled back, managing to keep on his feet. His face twisted in anger and he lunged at Jesse to try and hit him but the 501st trooper was ARC trained and a lot quicker. He ducked under Viper's punch and used his momentum to without hesitation, spear tackle him in the middle and smash him down into the floor. Viper tried to get up but Jesse grabbed the front of his armour and slammed him back to the ground, pinning him down.
"DON'T. EVER. TOUCH. MY. VOD'IKA," Jesse yelled, each word followed by a punch to Viper's chest or face.
"Uh, I think we should stop this now," Bly said as Jesse continued to land punches despite Viper's feeble attempts to stop him. Wolffe ran forwards and grabbed Jesse by the shoulders, yanking him off the downed Lieutenant. To everyone's shock, Jesse's elbow shot up and slammed into Wolffe's nose. There was a loud crunch and Wolffe let go to instead grab his now bleeding nose, allowing Jesse to jump on top of Viper once again.
"You're a piece of shit Viper. You're a pathetic, jealous hut'uun," Jesse yelled as he continued to rain down punches. The couple of 501st members that were there tried to pull him off but he was a determined force to be reckoned with and couldn't be moved. Thire looked down at Viper's face, seeing the blood covering it as his weak attempts to get Jesse off slowed. Thire was jolted from his frozen state, his feet moving before he realised and he stopped a few steps away from the two on the floor.
"Stop. Jesse, stop," he said quickly but Jesse didn't even react.
"Ori'vod, gev. Gedet'ye," Thire yelled and Jesse froze, his fist still raised mid-air. Jesse's head shot up and his anger filled eyes met Thire's teary, confused ones. All the fight left Jesse's body and was instead replaced with sadness.
He couldn't remember the last time he had seen Thire without his helmet on. There were little scars littering Thire's face and a larger one cutting through his eyebrows, only just missing his eye. He shot to his feet quickly but slowed when he noticed the small flinch from Thire. He would have missed it, had he not known Thire well. He hesitated for a second before slowly reaching out for Thire who was only a couple of steps away. Thire didn't move, unsure what to do, so he just watched as Jesse shakily cupped his face. Both were frozen for a few seconds before Thire was tugged forwards and embraced tightly.
"Ni ceta Th'ika. Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum. Ni ceta," Jesse said quickly and Thire burst into tears. He wasn't normally an emotional person but he couldn't remember the last time one of his batchmates hugged him and told him they loved him. Jesse's arms tightened around him, one coming up to hold the back of Thire's head and tuck it safely into his shoulder. Thire's hands came up to shakily grasp at the back of Jesse's shoulders.
"I'm so sorry Thire. I've been the worst ori'vod. Gedet'ye, forgive me. Ni ceta, I'm sorry. Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum," Jesse muttered, ducking his head down to nuzzle into Thire's hair. Thire whimpered and clutched tighter to Jesse, his nails basically digging into the gap between Jesse's shoulder armour but Jesse didn't care.
"Ner vod'ika," Jesse whispered, sniffling as he buried his head further into Thire's hair. Bly quietly ordered some of his troopers to drag Viper to the medical bay while telling the other to scram and go find something else to do. Wolffe also told him men to leave and give them some space. They all did as asked, leaving the couple 501st troopers, the three Commanders and the two still embracing tightly.
"He needed this," Fox said quietly to Bly as Wolffe made his way over with the 501st troopers.
"How's your nose," Bly asked, trying to keep the grin from his face. Wolffe rolled his eyes and wiped the excess blood from his nose that had thankfully stopped bleeding.
"I'm fine, he just got a lucky hit in," Wolffe said.
"Yeah, he's been a bit wound up since you commed him Commander, sorry about that," one of the 501st troopers said.
"It's fine Kane," Wolffe said with a shrug. Truthfully it was a pretty good hit by Jesse. Fox glanced at the other 501st trooper and smiled.
"Kix," he said with a nod.
"Commander," Kix nodded back.
"I trust you two stopped shooting senators and natborns," Fox asked, making Bly gasp.
"You did what," he asked.
"We got a couple of those bastards and were undetected. Stopped once we realised you guys were getting shipped off planet and it would be pretty dangerous to continue," Kix said with a shrug.
"How hard was it to convince Jesse to go executing Senators," Fox asked with a raised eyebrow. Kix removed his helmet with a sigh, latching it onto his belt. He nodded over to Thire and Jesse a few metres away.
"Only had to mention what I saw happen to Thire and he was out for blood," he said.
"You know, if he cared so much, he should've shown it to Thire before," Fox said with a frown and Kix sighed.
"Jesse isn't good at that stuff and he bought into all the talk about the Guard. But you know, him getting arrested so much at 79's, I feel like it was his way of trying to spend some time with Thire," Kix said quietly.
"Well that is certainly an interesting way of going about things," Wolffe said.
"I never said it was smart. Jesse is a di'kut and we know that," Kix said, glancing back at the two.
"But Thire was always his favourite and some things never change. They'll work it out and Thire will give him hell but he deserves it," Kix said with a light chuckle. Bly, Wolffe and Fox's comms suddenly started beeping and they all glanced down.
"Is everything okay," Kane asked.
"We're being summoned by the Generals," Fox said.
"Kix, keep an eye on those two. Once they've settled a bit, take them back to my quarters to catch up. Code is 20891," Bly said and Kix nodded.
"Come on, let's go see what the Jedi want," Fox said, nodding to Bly and Wolffe as the three of them turned to leave. Fox wasn't keen on leaving Thire alone but he had Jesse and he deserved to be able to reconnect with a batchmate, just as Fox himself had done.
