01| The Twins

Irene always knew that pregnancy wasn't going to be easy, especially when it came to having twins. She had been reading ever book on pregnancy and motherhood that she could get her hands on. She couldn't deny the fact that she was terrified of being a terrible mother and she was determined to be as prepared as possible. There was no doubt in Irene's mind that being a father was going to come naturally to Clark and there was no way that she was going to be known as the bad parent.

Ironically what Irene assumed would be the most exciting part of being pregnant was turning out to be the most stressful. How was she supposed to know what the twins were going to like?

"I think you're overthinking this honey." Clark said as he took the two blankets away from her. She wasn't sure how long she had been staring between the pink and blue blankets, they had an ultrasound appointment the next day and they were supposed to find out the gender then. Shopping hadn't really been on the plan for the day but Irene couldn't resist taking a peek at the inside of the store when the walked past it.

"Maybe we should wait for tomorrow?" Irene suggested afraid of making the wrong choice. The last thing she wanted to do was get ahead of herself and end up choosing wrong. The had already cleared out the guest bedroom in their apartment to start designing the nursery, but the days were slipping by so quickly Irene was growing eager to get it finished.

There was a guilty look on his face, and Irene immediately knew what he was feeling guilty about. He had never been good at hiding his emotions, Clark wore his heart on his sleeve.

"Clark!" Irene exclaimed unable to feel a little disappointed, she had wanted them to find out together. It was a whole moment that she had imagined at her appointment. "You already know don't you?"

Clark shrugged as he picked up one pink blanket and one blue blanket handing them to her. "I check up on them every once in a while."

Irene wasn't entirely surprised, of course Clark would be checking if the twins were healthy. If she had the ability to do it she would be doing the same thing. "So?"

"You want to know?" He questioned causing Irene to roll her eyes unable to hide her irritation.

"Of course I want to know." She replied doing her best not to raise her voice and draw unwanted attention their way. Irene was very aware that normally she wouldn't be this upset, but her hormones made her occasionally feel her emotions twice as much. "You know and it's not fair."

"Did you have a preference?" He questioned and it caused Irene to pause. She couldn't deny that she had thought a lot about what she preferred, because the reality was that she was hoping for girls. But of course she would love boys regardless.

"Girls."

Clark smiled as he looked down at the two blankets that he had placed back in her hands. Irene looked down at them too not entirely sure what he seemed to be suggesting, but the realization came to her slowly.

"Really?" Irene asked knowing that Clark was no liar, but needing his confirmation regardless. Clark chuckled and nodded in response as he placed his hand on her stomach. Over the last month she had gotten bigger, and although some part of her was beginning  to grow a little subconscious about her body but the morning sickness had stopped."What was your preference?"

"It wouldn't matter to me."

Irene rolled her eyes as she handed the blankets back to Clark because it was an answer that she suspected. Luckily they wouldn't have to face any disappoint if the twins were going to be a boy and a girl. "That's such a boring answer Clark."

He leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss on her lips. Clark was enjoying every moment of her being pregnant that much was clear, but she couldn't ignore that he had also been extremely stressed since the day that Lex Luthor escaped Arkham Asylum over a month ago. Irene was also admittedly worried about Lex and constantly thinking about what he could possibly be up too but she was trying not to fixate on him. She didn't want to Lex Luthor that much power over their lives.

"I'm going to go pay for these." Clark said instead as he held up the two blankets always thinking two steps ahead of what she was thinking. It was one of the many reasons why she loved him so much.

It hadn't been Irene's plan to shop when they started walking back to the Planet after their lunch, but when she saw all the baby stuff in window she couldn't resist going inside. Luckily for her Clark had never been good a saying no to her, now that she was pregnant is was practically impossible for him to refuse her anything she wanted no matter how ridiculous.

"You two went shopping?" Cat said looking almost offended as she looked across the office at Clark who was placing the bags under his desk.

Irene sat down instantly feeling relief when she did so. Her feet had been hurting since they had left the store but she didn't want to mention it to Clark, especially since he had told her that she should probably stop wearing heels to work. But Irene had stubbornly refused considering that she had already had to buy a new closet's worth of clothes to accommodate her growing stomach she just needed one thing about her appearance to stay the same. Unfortunately she had chosen to keep wearing her heels.

"I don't know I just feel like I should start getting ready for these babies early." Irene replied knowing that maybe Clark was right and she was overthinking everything. But she didn't want to leave anything for the last minute and she wanted everything to be ready at least two month before she was due so that she and Clark could just enjoy the last couple months of their pregnancy.

"So Angel and I were thinking that maybe you would want a gender reveal party?" Cat questioned though it sounded like less of a suggestion and more of a demand.

Irene considered lying and acting as if she and Clark didn't already know the genders of the twins, but the truth was that she wasn't big on parties. And she especially wasn't big on parties that were centered around her. Then knowing Cat she was going to go all out on this party. "Clark and I were thinking that we don't really want a gender reveal party."

"You mean that you don't want a party."

Irene sighed having hoped to avoid an uncomfortable situation, she knew that this was something that Cat was looking forward to. Especially because as far as she knew Cat and her brother were still trying to get pregnant with no luck. "Fine I don't want the party. But you have full control over the baby shower."

Cat smiled as she leaned forward across the desk, there was a mischievous glint in her eye that worried Irene knowing that meant that she was planning on making a big deal about the baby shower. If it was up to Irene there wouldn't be a baby shower at all but she was willing to sit through one if it would make Cat happy.

A/N: Just a random update, like I mentioned before this story isn't my current priority to update as its my goal to finish my other stories that are close to being finished. I am also still working on the chapter outline for this story so I won't be updating regularly until that it complete. But if I randomly get inspiration to write a chapter for this story I will write. But I do hope that you all enjoyed a glimpse of Irene and Clark during the pregnancy.
